Locating A Benchmark Here

Recommended Posts

We were driving through Yellowstone Park on 09/08 and stopped at a scenic viewpoint of a waterfall. Right next to the observation deck was a Benchmark. We wrote down the number in the center circle and the number outside that circle. Unfortunately we didnt take a GPS reading of the location.

Now we are home and trying to log our find but are unable to locate this Benchmark. Is there a way to find this other than searching for a cache in the area then searching for a nearby Benchmark from there? Are all Benchmarks listing here? How do you find a PID #? Are we just out of luck? We weren't searching for anything other Bears (and didnt see any) through the park and just came across this.

Thanks

Not all are hear. Many by the US Geological Survey (USGS) don't appear in the NGS database (only source of geocaaching data) because they were never submitted by USGS. Also many other federal agencies as well as state and private companies have marks out there and not here.

Also the Geocaching data is date from around 2001 and has not been updated with current NGS data. NGS used to published the data annual on CD ROM but discontinued that and now you must download from thier site. Just too much work to update geocaching.

Without the position its hard to tell what you have. Do you have a photo, or what was cast into the disk as well as whats stamped on it? Most of us can tell a lot about the mark by what that info is.

Heck, It might be too much work to pin a thread at the top of this forum directing an answer to why things are not in the database, and a link to the FAQ. Instead, we answer this question 3 times a week on average. Sure would be nice though.

brodiebunch -

As Z15 says, many benchmark disks are not included in the database we use.

I wanted to make sure you know, however, that there are other search modes for benchmarks other than clicking on "Nearest Benchmarks" for geocaches.

Use the benchmark hunting FAQ and search page. In that page, you can either put in a local zip code in the box called "By Postal Code", or click on "Other search options" and enter what you found written on the disk in the box called "By designation" (and be sure to click its associated radio button!!).

If you're interested in finding more benchmarks, you may wish to read the whole benchmark FAQ page.

Another approach would be to look at a topo map (e.g. from Maptech.com, USAPhotoMaps, or Terraserver) or use Google Maps or Google Earth to get approximate latitude and longitude, then plug those numbers into the Geocaching advanced benchmark search page.

But as others have noted and is prominently noted on the main benchmark page, many if not most survey disks are not included in the database we use here.

Thanks for the input, we appreciate it!

Yes, we have a picture but I am not sure how to upload one to this forum.

Also I did do a search of the area at the Benchmark FAQ page, I entered in the designation (F10 or F-10) and nothing came up. I did enter the parks zip code but that didnt help.

This Benchmark sits upon a concrete cone and the scenic viewpoint appeared to be heavily visited (its on the east entrance road) so I am surprised other Benchmarkers or geocachers havent tried to log this as a find. This would be our first Benchmark and we weren't looking for it either.

Thanks again

Could this have been the disk you found?

Its already in the pinned topic at the top of these forums, and you wrote it.
