Lone Monkey
Imagine you are on your way to a cache. You round the corner on a trail, and the next thing you know... *CLICK* a box on a tree just took your picture! This happened to me a while ago when I was out at dusk around the fall season. It turns out that some hunters use these to scout out deer trails. Do you think that someone would drop some hard-earned cash on one of THESE to take pictures of cachers? I was curious if someone has done something like this before? What are your thoughts? -LM EDIT - Spelling Edited September 10, 2005 by Lone Monkey Quote Link to comment
justybug
i can't name any specific caches right offhand, but i've heard that these are used for some caches. i haven't bumped into any yet though.. the audible click is kind of strange though, i figured they'd be quieter, to keep game coming back instead of startling them.. +ODragon
Apparently it doesn't bother them so much. One of the cachers in our area uses them to figure out what kind of deer are on his trails so he'll be ready for hunting season. He says they may get spooked but he can't tell because he keeps getting pictures of the same ones night after night. And they're just hanging around, not running away. The one he uses even has a flash. Quote Link to comment
darus67
Ugh. There are enough cameras watching us already. Is no place sacred? Personally I'd be annoyed. Quote Link to comment
Frodo13
If someone wants to take a random picture of my sweaty self covered in bug bites and post it on the internet I only request they do a little photoshop manipulation and drop my head on Brad Pitt's body or Angelina Jolie for that matter. +Got GPS
I have and use frequently two stealthcams. Never on a cache though (They range from 50 to 600 dollars). I've have a bunch of pics of hunters walking within feet of them and they have no idea. They funny thing is that the cameras are ALWAYS on posted land where nobody has permission to hunt. Two of them got mauled by bear, one was TOTALLY destroyed and another just shows some battle scars. I've been told that for some reason they are attracted to the scent of 35MM film. MapheadMike
Orienteering Cincinatti uses such a product from time to time. Note the different approaches to the control that's way off the trail. No social trails forming there. Quote Link to comment
Bill & Tammy
$259.00? and we we po'd when a piece of tupperware gets muggled. Just imagine. Quote Link to comment
BBWolf+3Pigs
When I saw these things in the various catalogs I get, I thought it would be cool to set up a cache with one. The cost, however, is still too high for my wallet. If I ever did set up a cache like this, I would be sure to either explicitly state that it was a webcam type cache, or hint at it. I could image some people would be upset that they were photogrpahed when they weren't expecting it. Quote Link to comment

DavidMac
Once at an event on someone's private property, the organizer hid several caches throughout the woods and set up a hunting camera near one of them. Most people walked right by and had their picture taken without even realizing it. Later, a few pictures from the cam were uploaded to the event page: GCN5YE Quote Link to comment
Super_Nate
So when I was looking for a camo cache in the woods and I had to take a dump...that box in the tree wasn't the cache after all Quote Link to comment
TEAM RETRIEVER
Being a hunter, I know several buddies that use them and get some really cool wildlife photos of critters doing strange things you wouldn't normally see. I just can't bring myself to pay the $$$, but some guys like 'em. Now, using them for geocaching is something new. Might even catch some muggles with it! LOL! Quote Link to comment
Colorado Cacher
Hmmmm. I bet my Schrade BT-01 will unhook that camera from the tree for my next cache. Quote Link to comment
