Hurricane Katrina

If the owners of a Seattle based site don't wish to put any links on their page for relief for a New Orleans disaster, but decide to for a Seattle disaster, why is that bad? They're not allowed because someone who lives in South Carolina, or Germany, might be offended?

Give me a break. People need to realize that they come visit this site, not the other way around. If you don't like it - lump it. They don't have to pander to the wishes of anyone.

It is bad because the Seattle-based company is based on the work and community of geocachers which include those that may be displaced, injured, or dead as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Regardless of the location of the disaster, if this site refuses to officially recognize that part of its userbase is in extraordinary need currently, then that is bad.

What this site is allowed to do was not in question (until you used a Rumsfeldian rhetorical question-and-answer to introduce it as such). This topic remains about a suggestion the community has that would improve the website as well as the opinions behind why that suggestion would improve the website.

After the Tragedy of 9-11 and the threads that came about during the Tsunami relief efforts last year, we have come to realize that there is too much angst and frustration over which tragedy is chosen over another in the US or worldwide.

As a result, we have made it corporate policy not to profile any particular tragedy that is front page news. There are enough efforts in place to do this already and, although our hearts go out to those who have suffered as a result of Hurricane Katrina, we do not plan to post a link to the Red Cross or any other organization requesting donations.

However, if there is a regional tragedy and you wish to ask for assistance to house, clothe, or otherwise provide support to your geocaching and non-geocaching neighbors, feel free to use the regional forums to gather support. Just make sure to keep them on-topic and keep political agendas out of the mix.

What difference would that make?

No difference at all.

...except show some folks think certain things are more important when it hits closer to home than when it happens to the other guy.

That says something about your character.

Nobody said anything about one tragedy being more important than another. My point was that this is their site, and they can do with it what they want.

If you feel that because something is important to you, then GC.com should change the way they do business, that says something about your character too.

Do you go into a restaurant to eat lunch, and suggest to the manager that they provide a way for people to donate while they're ordering? Do you go see a movie, and suggest to the manager that they provide a way for people to donate while they're buying tickets? Do you go get a haircut, and suggest to the manager that they provide a way for people to donate while they're waiting?

Do you insist that every company and every web site provide ways for people to help? I doubt it.

We're used to you telling us how to cache, which kinds of caches we should like or ignore, because that's how you cache. So it shouldn't surprise us that since GC.com doesn't do what you want them to do, then you think they're wrong.

The question has been answered so I am closing this topic.

In closing I ask that you pray for the victims and please help if you can. Who knows, the next person who needs aid may be you.
