There is a website I read that sounds like "park dot com" (except the first letter of "park" is actually 6th letter of the alphabet. They feature great news articles and links to current happenings. Unfortunately, they sometimes also feature a link or three to "not safe for work" picture sites, so I'm not allowed to mention the site name directly in this forum.)

Only 3 category five hurricanes have ever made landfall in the United States since records began: one in 1935, Hurricane Camille in 1969, and Hurricane Andrew. If Katrina doesn't suddenly fall apart, she's gonna leave one hell of a mess.

N.O.'s levee system is only 13 feet high. Forecasters are predicting a 28-foot storm surge with 30-foot waves on top of that if Katrina maintains current strength. That could get messy.

Not to be the materialistic weasel here, but I suggest everyone reading this fill your gas tanks TODAY, whether you're in the storm path or not.

 

A good part of US oil supply comes through Louisiana and specifically New Orleans. No idea what this is going to do to oil prices, but "drive them lower" is probably not a probable outcome.

TWC just said eye is closed. What exactly does that mean?

 

I think it means the eye is fully circular with no breaks in the eyewall thru 360 degrees - in other words almost perfectly formed with no sign of breaking up.

Good luck to Louisiana and Mississippi! I was bunkered down there through Hurricane Georges (Gulfport) and can't imagine trying to ride this one through. It isn't going to be pretty but keep them in your thoughts and try to be there when it is over and they need it most! BTW I am a northerner now, but Gulfport will always have a special place in my heart.

I'm from New Orleans. Moved about 29 years ago. I was 5 years old when Hurricane Betsy hit. We lived in my folks donut shop for 2 weeks, Concrete building. When we did go home, we were pushing water with the bumper. Waited another 2 weeks for electricity.

 

Still have lots of family there, Slidell, Bay St. Louis. Have some good friends up through MS as well all the way to Corinth. My prayers are with each.

As you have probably already heard, Houston Astrodome will be the "new home" for 30-50,000 people being evacuated from New Orleans Superdome and other shelters. Any and all supplies are needed.

 

As a Girl Scout Leader, we are starting a collection of the usual items needed and will transport to our local Girl Scout Council. In addition to the usual collections, we have a girl scout who is personally affected by this.

 

Many organizations are needing your help. Please, let's show our Texas Pride and Hospitality and help.

 

Thanks so much. My heart goes out to the thousands of people affected by this tragedy. They are looking toward a long time of heartache and sorrow while they recover. Let's help.

Blind Acorn, I hope you don't mind, but I changed the topic title from "Good Luck Louisana Cachers" to "Good Luck Katrina Affected Cachers". I have also merged a couple of topics regarding support into this topic. I hope this will focus the discussions here. I have one of my extended family members still missing, though most are accounted for. Tharagleb, several of mine were in Covington too and they all came out OK. It took some time for them to contact us. Hopefully yours are OK too.

Living in Germany where we do not have such natural disasters it is hard to imagine how within a few hours you can loose everthing.

My thoughts are with all those suffering from losses.

As a former resident of the Louisiana Gulf Coast my thoughts are with everyone down there and hope your lives can return to as near normal as soon as possible. And knowing the folks from there you will rise and rebuild. Cajuns are a hardy people and won't let this run them off..

I wonder if we ought to place MREs and bottled water in some of the bigger caches. Then, if some weather comes along; and they float away; and someone finds them; then at least there will be food and water in them. Who knows, we may even save a life or two.
