+The Forester Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 Midge Heaven GCJJKD I suggest that this cache urgently and temporarily be suspended. A child recently went missing from a location close by. His body was subsequently discovered in woodland at a locus which is also close by. Today, at a televised press conference, the L&B Police announced that following a post-mortem a major murder investigation is underway which involves a detailed search of all surrounding woodland. They also asked the local public to observe and report all strangers seen in the area of the woodland surrounding the locus of the find of the body and between there and the location in Deans where the child was last seen alive. They also specifically asked that the public keep a sharp lookout for items such as the child's missing plastic lunchbox. In view of the obvious potential for perfectly innocent geocachers to inadvertently disrupt the forensic search, I have sent an urgent email to the cache-owner alerting him and requesting that the cache be temporarily suspended until the murder investigation's fieldwork has been declared by the Police to have been completed. +Roving Rangies Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 It may be prudent for the cache owner to get in touch and offer the location to the police. If the police find it, they will want to speak to everyone who made an entry in the log book. Quote
+Haggis Hunter Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 Or if the cache owner hasn't responded, it may be prudent for The Forester to get in touch with the police, so that they can take into account of any visits in the past week. Whilst he is at it, he could find out from the police if they want it to be temporarily disabled. It may not even come within their search area, and if it does then you can be sure they have already inadvertantly disabled it, as the area will be cordoned off. As for young Rory being murdered it really is sad and scary, it is only about 10 miles from my house and I have a young daughter. I hope the person gets caught soon. Quote
+The Forester Posted August 24, 2005 Author Posted August 24, 2005 As I understand the news reports: the kid went missing at 08:30 last Thursday morning from a location which is a short walk from the cache trail. The child's body was discovered approximately three days later. The cachelog page shows that there was been one cachevisit in that time, but I really don't think that there's any useful purpose to be served by bringing the cache to the attention of the extremely busy police who are engaged in what their senior detective has publically described as the most major murder investigation ever conducted by the police in that part of the world. Although one of the items which the police are searching for is the child's plastic lunch box, I don't think that there is anything to be gained by removing the physical cache. If the cops find it then it will immediately be obvious to them that it is not relevant to their investigation and they will presumably return it to its hiding place or perhaps invite the owner to collect it from them. Once the perpetrator of this murder has been apprehended and/or once the police have completed their evidential search of the woodland it might be worth the owner checking on the continued presence of the cachebox before the temporary suspension is lifted. +Firth of Forth Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 If a cacher visited the area between the child going missing and his body being found, then they should perhaps be alerted to that fact if they don't know already, in case they have any useful information. Quote

This is exactly what I was concerned about, and I do believe I had said so in my last comment. But as usual the obvious has gone straight over the head of the obvious and got totally ignored. I'll drop the last finder an email pointing out the facts. Quote
+Haggis Hunter Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I'll drop the last finder an email pointing out the facts. Email sent, the last finder is from South Africa, so there is a good chance they don't know. I have informed them of the email address of the police. Hopefully the fact the body may have been nearby will influence them into getting in touch with the police, as they may be a vital witness. Such as a confirmed time frame for say the tent lying there. Quote
nobby.nobbs Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 i know they say we shouldn't worry but this happens too often. kid goes off and is never seen alive again. to be honest it's always been like this but nowadays you hear about it. the stats show the level hardly changed over the years. police returning the cache? not likely it'll be filed away and left in a storage room. they have better things to do than go back and place a cache back even once the investigations over with. hopefully it's still there and isn't in the way. lets hope this gets solved quickly for the sake of the family.
