+Dorsetgal & GeoDog Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Got a couple of emails about caches I am watching just now, is this a joke and does it happen often? see the entry here
+Bill D (wwh) Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 Hmm. The systematic taking of caches isn't very common, but it does happen. There was an episode of cache "piracy" in a big way in the States not too long ago. Individual caches do get stolen or trashed by people who either find them accidentally or use geocaching.com to find them, but this sort of thing is rather less common. They've posted the same log on around eight or so caches in the Bournemouth area. As one of those caches is a virtual, I'm inclined to doubt that they've actually taken those caches, so far anyway. Whether this is a joke, or whether they do intend to steal caches wholesale, remains to be seen.

Yes, I noticed one was a virtual, and that they just joined today, let's hope their "fun" doesn't extend beyond the keyboard!
nobby.nobbs Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 time for a spot of caching vigilantism. baseball bats at dawn to learn em a lesson!!! let's hope this remains just a keyboard exercise.
Lactodorum Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 It certainly looks unpleasant but unfortunately there’s nothing we can do to stop this sort of thing. It’s happened in the past and it’ll probably happen again. As geocaching grows more weirdos like this will stumble across it and will get enjoyment from spoiling other people’s fun. The more people react, especially in the forums, the more they’ll enjoy it. Unpleasant, but a fact of life. We can ask Groundspeak to close their account but they’ll either get another one or just continue their “game” and not post. I suggest we all give a collective "shrug of the shoulders" and get on with the serious business of hunting plastic boxes in the woods and ignore these feeble minded "people".
+[MF]taz Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 they could always ban the IP address so that they cant access any of the Geocaching sites.
+Snosrap Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 taz' date='Aug 23 2005, 12:04 PM'] they could always ban the IP address so that they cant access any of the Geocaching sites. The vast majority of people's internet access is via some form of Dynamic IP Address allocation so that wouldn't really solve the problem.

However if they want to get back in they just change the user name and IP. but it does slow them down.

+Mr & Mrs Hedgehog Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 (edited) Well they have taken at least one of my caches... and as I don't live that close to Bournemouth anymore, I'm archiving all my caches.... sad to say that the morons have won on this occasion... If you get any takers you can arrange it at www.geocaching.com/adopt
+Moote Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I could probably come up with a choice statement for this kind of behaviour and people, but Lactodorum and Eckington would more than likely ban me. So all I'll say is "blahhhhhhhhhhhh" to these idiots who wish to destroy others enjoyment. Milton (aka moote)

Lactodorum Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 I'm not going to let this thread become a forum for these children. Neither am I going to respond. This will hopefully be my last comment. Thread closed.
