+CasheKicker Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 The following are the current Cache Standings for Canada. Thanks to Funky Nassau of MGA for putting these Numbers together: Here are the current Standings: ON - 3403 BC - 2760 NB - 1723 AB - 1322 PQ - 1237 NS - 803 NF - 461 MB - 282 SK - 195 PE - 54 YK - 43 NT - 26 NV - 7 Standings effective Aug. 17/05 Quote
+CasheKicker Posted August 18, 2005 Author Posted August 18, 2005 Now that all looks good for the larger provinces. However, lets take a look at the same stats from a different angle: One thing that bothers me is it does not take into consideration the Cache density based on provincial population. Therefore I decided to work out the numbers based on that factor. Using the most current posted census stats from 2001 I made this table Cache Stats for Canada Based on Poulation according to 2001 Census Population of Canada 2001 = 30,007,090 PROV-----POP.-----CACHES-----#PER/CACHE-----Provincial Score ..............(X).............(Y).......................................................... NF-----512,930-------461-----------1,112.65-------------219 PE-----135,290--------54------------2,505.37------------ 97 NS-----908,005------803------------1,130.77-------------215 NB-----729,500-----1723--------------423.39-------------575 PQ---7,237,480-----1237------------5,850.83------------- 42 ON-11,410,045-----3403------------3,352.94-------------- 73 MB---1,119,585------282------------3,970.16-------------- 61 SK-----978,935------195------------5,020.18-------------- 49 AB---2,974,810-----1322-----------2,250.23---------------108 BC---3,907,735-----2760-----------1,415.85---------------172 YK-------28,675--------43-------------666.86---------------365 NT-------37,360--------26-----------1,436.92---------------170 NV-------26,745---------7------------3,820.71-------------- 64 .....................................................(Z).............................. Totals...30,007,095...12316..........2,436.43 In order to make the provincial score a number that makes sence I had to make up a formula that would make the score easier to read. Otherwise there would just be to many decimal places. For Example Based on the above information there are 2436.43 people for every cache placed in Canada. X=Provincial Population Y=# Caches in Province z= #of Caches per person in Canada Formula Y/X*(Z*100)=SCORE IE. For NF 461 Caches divided by population of 512,930 = .00089876 2436.43 multiplied by 100 = 243643 .00089876 X 243643 ------------ 218.976292 Rounded off gives a score of 219 So to put it all into perspective if we wanted to rank the provinces based on Cache density by provincial poulation it would be as follows Rank.....Prov.....Score 1............NB........575 2............YK........365 3............NF........219 4............NS........215 5............BC........172 6............NT........170 7............AB........108 8............PE...........97 9............ON..........73 10..........NV...........64 11..........MB...........61 12..........SK...........49 13..........PQ...........42 Hmmm now that sheads a different light on things now dont it. Big congrats goes out to New Brunswick for having the most caches per capita in Canada.!!!! Quote
+CasheKicker Posted August 18, 2005 Author Posted August 18, 2005 (edited) Well now that was interesting. That last one prompted me to do another Stat table. I started wondering how many caches are in Canada for every square KM of territory. Land Area Of Canada according to Stats Canada = 9,093,507 square KM Giving us 1.3544 Caches per 1000 sqkm Prov-----Land Area------Caches-----Caches/1000 sqkm NF----------373,872----------461-----------1.2330 PE-------------5660------------54-----------9.5406 NS-----------53,338----------803----------15.0549 NB-----------71,450---------1723---------24.1148 PQ-------1,365,128---------1237-----------0.9061 ON---------917,741---------3403-----------3.7080 MB---------553,556-----------282----------0.5094 SK---------591,670-----------195----------0.3296 AB---------642,317----------1322----------2.0582 BC---------925,186----------2760----------2.9832 YK----------474,391------------43----------0.0906 NT--------1,183,085------------26----------0.0220 NV--------1,936,113-------------7----------0.0036 So once again the tale of the tape shuffles the rankings and places NB as Champion Rank.....Prov.....Density/1000sqkm 1............NB.............24.1148 2............NS.............15.0549 3............PE...............9.5406 4............ON..............3.7080 5............BC..............2.9832 6............AB...............2.0582 7............NF...............1.2330 8............PQ...............0.9061 9............YK...............0.9606 10..........MB...............0.5094 11..........SK...............0.3296 12..........NT................0.0220 13..........NV................0.0036 All 3 Maritime provinces have the highest density of caches based on Land area. Again a big congrats to N.B. by far the winner of this catagory. Yes it helps by being so small but so is the population. Fact remains it is still holds the highest density of caches. +Olar Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 So the moral of the story is, due to the current high cost of gasoline and thus travel cost per cache, move to NB/NS. Now if I could just convince my wife that if we sell the house for $250K in Ontario we could have the same thing built in NB/NS for $50K. She just has no sense of adventure. Cheers, Olar Quote

+Hard Oiler Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 New Brunswick wins thanks to one cacher, Insp Gadget with close to 25% of the hides in the province. I doubt that any other province has such a prolific hider - he celebrated May Day this year by hiding his 400th cache. Quote
+The Blue Quasar Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Very cool statistics CasheKicker! I'm proud to be located in the one of the top 13 provinces or territories listed. As a person that likes data like that, I was quite surprised by a lot of it. Thanks for the "hmmmm" 's The Blue Quasar Quote
+capjap Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I like stats too, and I think that it is erroneous to base the cache percentage on the provincial population. A better way to compare the numbers would be caches found divided by number of cachers in the province. Too bad we can't track that...I think that would be rather interesting. Quote
+parker2 Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 LOL I did the same stats thing last year (caches/km) just for my own personal info. I should of posted it back then. I should try and figure out the cache density for the major cities in Canada next. lol parker2 Quote

+lordfishman Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 It would be interesting to see what would happen if you where to look at the cache density in Ontario if you where to split ON into North and South, I am sure if you did that Southern Ontario would score rather nicely. Now you would have to assume that the 46th parallel is the dividing line. I havent figured out the stats but since Northern ontario takes up a huge chunk of the province and there are relatively few caches up there compared to down here.. Of course you can do the same with any provice, take out to unpopulated northern parts out and the stats all change Quote

+Newfiezedder Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Wow, those are some interesting numbers. Guess according to population I average out to 6th (3rd for NF and 9th for ON), on top of that the only cachers I have met out on the trail are one of the number 25's on the hide list. Thanks for the stats. Quote
mrscleo Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 I'm sure Quebec would do better if you'd take the English speaking population instead of the whole population! Geocaching.com is not accessible, if you don't speak English. Quite a few people in the province can't do geocaching because of a language barrier. Quote
+CasheKicker Posted September 11, 2005 Author Posted September 11, 2005 (edited) If forgin countries all over the world. Including France can geocache whats stopping PQ? Here is an example of one in France that references Canada. Un petit coin de Canada ~ GCQEAA Google Language tools will do a pretty good jod of letting you read any language. Not a good excuse not to cache. Edited September 11, 2005 by CasheKicker Quote
mrscleo Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 (edited) I wasn't saying that people can't cache, but you are getting a smaller number of geocachers because of the language barrier. Anyway, I was just pointing out that the stats that put Quebec last aren't really fair. Let's not argue over silly statistics. As my stat teacher told us at the start of his class in university "stats are the scientific method for lying" (oh and the Google tools do NOT do a good job. It's a pretty horrendous job most of the time! But it's a start, I guess) Edited September 11, 2005 by mrscleo Quote
+CasheKicker Posted September 11, 2005 Author Posted September 11, 2005 Well when it comes to stats you can make them reflect pretty much anything you want depending how you formulate them. Quote
+polarbeardiggers Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 I appreciate that stats as well seeing that we are on the top 24th of canada,is very rewarding, i love putting out caches as much as finding them, when i started a year ago we might of had just over 8 pages of sites, now we are on the 14th page, great to see others getting involved by putting a few caches out, sort of giving back in a way,and fun seeing the new idea's for hiding has evolved, cache on people,. +_canadianbacon_ Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 I don’t have any data to compare province by province, but I am amazed at the recent growth in caching in the last year. The logs are chalk full of new names. I added a feature that counts the number of caches (as they come online) and plot them to a chart on the BC Geocaching website. The data starts in March 2005, and shows a good trend in cache listings. Click to see BC Cache Listings Graph For those who dont click to see the pretty picture, here is the data as of Sept 12. +PeterNoG Posted September 24, 2005 Posted September 24, 2005 Although Manitoba is far down the list in cache numbers, the growth is very rapid. When I started in April/04 there were about 80; in the last 40 days, 80 new caches have been added. Quote
+Big JohnP Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 Hi! I've been checking the post every once in a while, and I've noticed something. Althought it's interresting to get some info on how many caches there are in different provinces or how many caches per population density or how different areas rank with cachers, the important thing is that it should not convay the message that this is something of a race. Geocaching is a fun hobby and a healthy way of going out and communicate with nature. Look at all the new places we have come to visit that normally, we might have passed by. A lot of these places are actually close to our homes. We get to do a lot of hiking on foot or with our bikes, we get to meet new friends. It's O.K. to ask people to go out and add new caches, but not as a race with other provinces to see who has the most caches in Canada, but rather going out to find new places to visit so people can find these areas that we were so lucky have seen. I started geocaching early on this year in Quebec, the number of new cachers has gone up quite rapidly and the number of new caches has literally exploded everywhere in the province. I have been visiting new places everywhere. I have also been to Ontario, New-York and Vermont. And in the process, I have taken off over 50 lbs in weight. What more could I want? Keep those caches coming, no matter where they are, as long as I can go out to search for them and enjoy the great outdoors. Big JohnP Quote
+lordfishman Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Language is not really a barrier to geocaching. Germany is the second highest concentration of caches. They even have thier own version of the GC.com http://www.geocaching.de/ But enough about that. Cache density seems to be affected by several factors. Population density, the more people there are the more likely there are cachers. Also the more caches the more likely others will take up the sport. And also by the cachers themselves in the area how prolific they are in placements etc. But I also think there is too much of a good thing, just go caching in Erie PA or other caching hotspots and you will soon get tired of going "Oh look another lamppost micro! Just like the one across the street." Quote
