A New Cache

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are getting into geocaching pretty good. We've hidden 2 successfully and we've been brainstorming about a new game to play with it. I asked her if she thought we could put a travel bug on an entire cache. Some one would find our cache then take the whole thing and rehide it, posting the new coordinates in the log as a "found it!". She loved the idea and thought of calling it a "Seek and Hide" (find a cache then hide it, rather than hide a cache and find it). Then you could give the whole cache a mission to complete. Any ideas? Has this been done before?

Yeah, people used to do this a while ago, called them Moving Caches, but they are against the rules now.

Of course, you could still make a container into a TB, put a log book in it and allow people to trade items in it, you just can't list it as a cache.

Just a different spin with a similar idea, I have a cache that you need to find a TB to get the coords for the cache. Since the cache doesn't move, it fits within the guidelines. Others have done this and similar things as well.

I used to have a cache/TB like this that I just loved. I was really disappointed when it disappeared. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...&log=y&decrypt=

I had a grace period to get in on the Grandfather clause to reissue it but I just couldn't think of a replacement at this point. The nice thing about Gilbert is that his potential grew as he met people. Creativity sparked creativity so it got people thinking about what they could do to add in some way (check both the cache and TB pages.) Yeah.. I still miss Gilbert :P and that creative spark that used to exist way back when.

I think they were called "travelling caches" and some are still active out there.

I reside in the West coast and I've never seen one here. On a business trip to Georgia last year, I almost got my hands on one, but someone beat me to it, rats!

Well, be careful looking into this...see the closed thread (currently on P. 2 here) (wish I could figure out how to add a link to closed threads!) called "Traveling Caches". There's alot of info there, but... Ask too many questions and TPTB get NASTY!!! :P

There's one up here, it's pretty cool. I really hope it never goes missing, because it's a lot of fun.

Do you mean something like this one? Cuckoo Cache Too

If you make it a true travel bug then yes but it will NOT be listed as cache as GC.com does NOT allow movable caches though www.movingcache.com is a listing for movable cache and another facet of the game. But you can NOT have a movable cache.

cheers

Nasty? I just read the entire thread and didn't see anyplace where they were nasty to you. They simply answered your question. Maybe you didn't like the answer, but that doesn't make it nasty.

there's a north carolina scavenger hunt cache that operates something like this. each finder sets the new thing to find in their online log. it's a pretty neat concept, but i'm not sure if it was origionally listed as a virtual cache or not. since new virtuals, as previously defined, are not really being created right now, some twist might have to be added to make the idea into more a traditional hide of something physical. i don't know if such a cache would be approved, or exactly what would make it acceptable under current guidelines, but i like the idea a lot. i think it would work particularly well in an area such as mine, where that is a large and fairly close-knit bunch of cachers in the community, and everyone, from regulars to lurkers seems to get along very well. i know the nc cache is popular, and it has been done by vacationers to the obx, not just local regulars.

I think the admins are pretty sensitive about this subject due to the fact that it comes up so often. In the past, there has been a lot of drama surrounding this topic. Do some forum searching on 'moving cache', 'travelling cache', etc. You will find loads of threads.

I agree that the admins often have some short and cold replies, but then again they are probably just tired of all the typing and reading and wish they could just go geocaching. The non-admins forget that these folks are volunteers. The admins sometimes forget that some of the posters are new to geocaching, the GC forums, or the Internet in general. It's probably nobodies fault.

Just go Geocaching for the reasons you loved it in the first place and accept it as it is.

BTW, there is a website seperate of geocaching that was started just for moving caches. Maybe Google knows where to find it for you.

I've seen this done, check out this TB. Of couse, you place it "in" an exsisting cache (the original container was about 24" x 12" - it was bigger than most caches, so it was placed nearby with a note in the cache box on where to get the TB).

surely, there's a creme or powder for that condition, although you should seek medical attention if it persists for four hours or more.

Perhaps you're mistaking sbell111 for the TPTB? As far as I know, he's not among them (I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong). I have to agree with briansnat - I don't see where TPTB i.e. Keystone, Hydee, LaPaglia (in his alter ego), were nasty to you at all.

Huh? <_< I took no issue at anything suz55tbird posted. My only issue was related to a specific TB that someone else brought up.

There were admins circling in that thread that responded to Suz's issues.

Just thought suz55tbird might have mistaken you for TPTB, given your references to violating the guidelines and critique of what others were posting. She didn't say TPTB were nasty to her, just that they were nasty.

Only suz55tbird can say for sure who or what she was referring to as "NASTY".

Here's a modification on the original idea, but you'll have to talk to your reviewer to see if they'd allow it:

Make a cache (preferably small). Attach a TB tag to it.

Allow it to be placed into other caches in the world ala a TB *but* have a page here at GC.com that also tracked the log of the cache itself...

No different than a TB? Not quite. Because as a cache, it could easily be logged by someone else without moving it, placing it, etc. and it would have tradeables/swag unlike a TB.

Just an idea that would get around the problems of a moving cache (placement in wrong places).

I was the someone whose TB he had issue with, and I have to say that he was not at all nasty, we simply disagreed...what a boring world it would be if everyone agreed all of the time... :D

That all sounds well and good, except the programming in this site won't let the cache owner change the coords more than a little bit. Which just brings us back to reason #2 that Keystone gave in the other thread.
