How Did Geocaching Begin?

My wife and I have been loving this activity for the last 3 months. It doesn't seem like it could have been around for too long because the accessability of GPS and the internet have only been around for the last decade or so.

Where did this whole addiction begin and how did it spread?

here is a link to the very first posting of a geocache.  No fancy websites back then!

a day Earlier, Dave Ulmer (first geocache placre) posted this

that would be fun to go hunt....do you know if it is still there?

I read somewhere that the cache is gone but there's plaque there to commemorate it.

Thanks to all for answering. It's even more unbelievable, but I love it! We found our 81st tonight and it's really amazing that in just 5 years, it has spread from a bucket in Oregon to the town of Nicholasville, KY having 15-20 stashes.
