robertlipe
If tidy couldn't make sense of your cache pages, other readers (browsers, plucker, GSAK, etc.) probably couldn't, either. The first cache page of yours I looked at was "Jeepers" which linked the background to http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/5e562ed3-...7c495704f0a.jpg and it displays it exactly as that image appears. I'd consider your source to be "sideways" but it's rendering it exactly as I'd expect. If you could offer examples of a cache page that you feel is "damaged" by tidy you could get more constructive help on fixing the offending markup. Link to comment
twjolson & Kay
I don't mean to flame or get pissed off, but if something like this, especially after all the finds you have, makes you quit geocaching, then I don't think many of us will miss you. Caching is about the outdoors, the hunt, the sport of it, not about html or wrong backgrounds. Those can be fixed, those are no big deal. I would even happily help you. It's like cutting off your hand to fix a papercut on your finger. If you do actually quit, good bye, if you want help, I'm here for you. Link to comment
Jeremy
1 1/2 hours between posting and quitting. Is that a record? Heck, I didn't even see the post to know how to fix "it" - whatever "it" was. Sorry to hear whatever trouble you had. We'll try to be more responsive in the future. +The Leprechauns
Jeremy, HTML tidy affected some of his cache pages, including background sounds, if I recall the post correctly. If one wishes to quit geocaching over an effort to correct improper formatting on cache pages, well, you can't please everyone. If people ARE having trouble with their cache page HTML, there are many, many people on this forum who are more than happy to help out. Link to comment
+fizzymagic
Let me re-recommend HTML Kit, a freeware HTML editor that has HTML Tidy built in. It's not a WYSIWYG editor, but it has templates, syntax highlighting, and many other features that make writing HTML easy, and it's easy to preview your results in a variety of browsers. I use it to write my cache pages offline, validate them with HTML Tidy, and the copy and paste the content into the textbox on the cache edit page. Works like a charm. After all the hoopla, I went and edited most of my cache pages. None of them changed at all. Link to comment

+fizzymagic
A check box to turn off the mandatory runinng of html tidy would be certainly nice... You mean during cache page editing, before the cache page is made publicly available, or you mean allowing it to be turned off for approved caches? I can buy the former, but I wuold not be so happy with the latter. Link to comment
+JanniCash
Why would you want to turn off something that is designed to fix any errors that you make. That reminds me of emails that I get at work. Our email application has spell check built in, yet I keep getting internal emails with horrific typos in them. It's not designed to fix the errors, it is designed to limit the damage, caused by improper HTML, to that section of HTML instead of leaking the problems into and destroying the surrounding page layout. It is possible that HTML-Tidy is going too far or has actually bugs. So the real question is if the OP's cache descriptions are proper and clean HTML, damaged by HTML-Tidy, or if his pages do contain errors that HTML-Tidy correctly detected (as designed) and which he needs to fix. To answer that question, I would yet have to look at an example of the HTML he created and what HTML-Tidy did to it. And yeah, there is the The Spelling Checker Song Jan Link to comment
+JanniCash
... To answer that question, I would yet have to look at an example of the HTML he created and what HTML-Tidy did to it. Out of curiosity I had to look at some of the OP's cache pages. There are for sure problems in his HTML, to say the least. For example, that <body> tag inside the long description might do something cool in some browsers, but it turns the whole page into NON-HTML because it is plain wrong. There have been offers from others to help him fix the problems, but instead he decided to edit out all content from his posts to other threads and sit upset in the corner. I assume he had a really bad day and it is probably the best to just wait until he cools off. Jan Link to comment

+TheAprilFools
Personally I think enforcing html standards using tidy is a good thing. The only issue I have is if Tidy removes stuff from the entered HTML code and does not give any notification to the user that it has done so. If it could just say what tags or properties were removed, I think that's sufficient. Link to comment
+nfa
OK...I finally got it...it's not pretty, but if sorta works... to make my page work using html tidy, I had to add the desired font size to each and every individual chunk of text in the entire listing...any <P>, <div>, etc would negate the prior font choice...that says html bloat to me, but now that I understand how it works, I can work around this silly addition to the system ...is this "solution" from the same people who brought us a Waymarking category of "McDonald's" on our new answer to locationless and virtual caches? +fizzymagic
thanks...but, I wanted to have the whole message at font size + 1 You shouldn't carry font size changes over <DIV> tags. They are not guaranteed to "stick." Generally speaking, new <DIV>, new font size specification. So you have to either not use DIV tags or set the font size every time you have one. You can often get away with using <P> tags instead of <DIV> tags. Font sizes usually carry over those. In your case, I think I would wrap the whole thing in one <DIV> tag and use <P> tags for your paragraphs. Not necessarily the most modern style, but then it is kind of hard to use CSS inside a cache description. Link to comment

They are not guaranteed to "stick." Generally speaking, new <DIV>, new font size specification. I happen to differ slightly. One should use DIV tags to change font types and sizes: <div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica; font-size: 12px"> <p> This is a <b>default</b> paragraph. It inherits the style of the enclosing DIV. </p> <p style="font-size: 16px"> This is a <b>16px</b> paragraph, overriding only font-size. </p> <p style="font-size: 9px"> This is a <b>9px</b> paragraph, overriding font-size again. </p> <p> This is back to <b>default</b> (12px). It falls back to the enclosing DIV. </p> <div style="font-size: 18px;"> <p> Here we are in a sub-DIV of <b>18px</b>. </p> <table align="center" summary="nothing special"> <tr><td><p>It doesn't carry over into tables.</p></td></tr> </table> <p> But it remembers to continue after the table (we're still in the 18px DIV). </p> </div> <p> And here again back to the first DIV (12px), still enclosing this paragraph. </p> </div> HTML Tidy likes the above with zero warnings/errors. And I think it does more or less exactly what was asked for. Jan Link to comment

+fluffy&itchy
hi guys and gals, I am having trouble getting the following to look correct in the discription part of a cache I am trying to post. I ran the following script in HTML-Kit program and it looks correct there but I just can't get it to look right on the cache page. The image I have in the body shows up fine. I just can't get the paragraphs to separate. Here is what I put in the discription with the code: PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DISCRIPTION BEFORE HEADING OUT TO FIND ANY CACHES IN THIS SERIES!<p></p> The cache is hidden inside the Art and Architechture building. YOU MUST GO INTO THE BUILDING TO FIND THE CACHE. IT IS NOT HIDDEN OUTSIDE!<p></p> The coords will take you to the east entrance of the building. You can enter from any entrance though. Entering from another door will not hinder your hunt.<p></p> After entering the building, locate the relief sculpture pictured below. <img src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/f04dee60-6731-4080-8323-b1e258d7d1b7.jpg"align-center=""> While standing facing the sculpture, the cache will be affixed to an object at about 5 o'clock. The container is magnetic, so you shouldn't have much trouble locating where it should be. However, you may have trouble retrieving it without being seen.<p></p> While you are here, take some time to peruse the various art projects on display or new ones being constructed. The Ewing Gallery is also housed here, so if you have time, it is worth taking a look. Admission is free.<p></p> The building is open 7 days a week, usually between 7a-11p. <p></p> DO NOT park in any of the Staff or Commuter parking lots if you come before 5pm, M-f. You WILL get a ticket. (trust me on this, I used to be a ticket writer here and them people is vicious!)<p></p> If you just absolutely have to come on a home football weekend, go to N35 57.274 W83 55.915. If fluffy or itchy is working that day, they may allow you to park IF:<p></p> 1. They are in a good mood (most of the time yes but you never know)<p></p> 2. You stand in the middle of the parking lot and sing, at the top of your lungs, the first verse of "Rocky Top". Don't worry if you are here to cheer on the opposing team. We have song sheets available for you to cheat from.<p></p> If you do come visit fluffy or itchy on a home game day, you can probably log their RV as a TravelBug. There is a TB tag attached to it. Just be sure there is a vehicle parked at the entrance to the parking that has a GC license tag holder. If not, then neither fluffy nor itchy is working that day. What am I doing wrong? +mini cacher
A good place to start wouldbe to wrapthe text with the opening and closing <p> tag rather than putting them both after each paragraph. I don't know what you mean by "can't get the paragraphs to separate" so I can't be sure that will be the only thing you need to do. <p>PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DISCRIPTION BEFORE HEADING OUT TO FIND ANY CACHES IN THIS SERIES!</p> <p>The cache is hidden inside the Art and Architechture building. YOU MUST GO INTO THE BUILDING TO FIND THE CACHE. IT IS NOT HIDDEN OUTSIDE!</p> <p>The coords will take you to the east entrance of the building. You can enter from any entrance though. Entering from another door will not hinder your hunt.</p> <p>After entering the building, locate the relief sculpture pictured below. However, you may have trouble retrieving it without being seen.</p> <p>While you are here, take some time to peruse the various art projects on display or new ones being constructed. The Ewing Gallery is also housed here, so if you have time, it is worth taking a look. Admission is free.</p> <p>The building is open 7 days a week, usually between 7a-11p.</p> <p>DO NOT park in any of the Staff or Commuter parking lots if you come before 5pm, M-f. You WILL get a ticket. (trust me on this, I used to be a ticket writer here and them people is vicious!)</p> <p>If you just absolutely have to come on a home football weekend, go to N35 57.274 W83 55.915. If fluffy or itchy is working that day, they may allow you to park IF:</p> <p>1. They are in a good mood (most of the time yes but you never know)</p> <p>2. You stand in the middle of the parking lot and sing, at the top of your lungs, the first verse of "Rocky Top". Don't worry if you are here to cheer on the opposing team. We have song sheets available for you to cheat from.</p> <p>If you do come visit fluffy or itchy on a home game day, you can probably log their RV as a TravelBug. There is a TB tag attached to it. Just be sure there is a vehicle parked at the entrance to the parking that has a GC license tag holder. If not, then neither fluffy nor itchy is working that day.</p> Link to comment
+Hynr
Anything you want as one paragraph should have a <p> tag before the first character of the paragraph and the </p> tag after the last character of the paragraph. If you are using <p></p> to force to a new line, then you should use the <br> tag instead. Link to comment
