+Black Dog Trackers
The NGS/Geocaching database has a few hundred thousand disks and their monumentation is sponsored by a large number of different agencies with their name stamped on the disk. How large is the number? This is not really a data-mining challenge because the indicator of which agency sponsored the monumentation of each disk isn't always clear from the datasheet. There is the LOGO data element but it is often missing. There's also the MONUMENTED line and often that indicaes the agency, but not always. Data miners beware - I think sometimes MONUMENTED tells what firm monumented the disk, not the agency stamped on the disk. Often, even the description doesn't always identify the agency. For many marks you just have to see it for yourself and read the inscription. In my curiousity, I first downloaded a couple of county files from the NGS and looked them over, particularly the LOGO field. Next, I went through all my finds and looked at the disk pictures. I was surprised at the variety, even in that small sample. Next, I went back to a couple of NGS files that I had converted to spreadsheets with DSWIN and noticed that some PIDs had an agency that were definitely not on my previous found list. Hmmm, a new category of PIDs to look for - unusual agencies! Of course, each person could, like I did, make their own list of different agencies, but I figure why not have a community list to see how big and varied it is. So, here is a start from the disks I found. For each type, I tried to pick the best example picture. This list might go to some website soon, but here's a place to start. Two things to do: 1. Post a message to this topic to add some additional types of agencies that you have found or seen, including via data mining (note the monumentation caution above) and benchmark gallery observing. Let's grow this list ! 2. If you have a PID with a better picture of an agency's disk, substitute it. Two things I suggest to not do: 1. I think we should keep this to a list of PIDs that have been found by us and the disk photographed, so that it is more like collection of our efforts, not just a data-mining exercise, although a data-mined list is certainly appropriate as a separate list, but there'd be no pictures for some of the types (yet). 2. I think this topic should avoid having images pasted in, since it would take up lots of downloading time when looking at a list is the real objective. If people want to look at a picture, they can look up the PID. (I added the state in parentheses for the county markers.) Here we go...... ArtMan
BDT, You gonna set up a web page for all these? I'l wager that there are marks from hundreds of municipalities, counties, water/sewer agencies, transit authorities, etc. Do you aim to collect different flavors of marks for any given agency? And is this duplicative of the excellent webpage by [rats! I forgot who...], which includes photos of various benchmark styles? In the meantime, here are a few more that I've found: HW3655 Town of Culpeper, VA JV2893 Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission AI4354 N.J. +Black Dog Trackers
ArtMan - I could do a web page for these, but am not really a bigtime web page maker, although I have made a few rather modest web pages. I do have the saved locations of some of our benchmark-related web page makers: holograph's site, DustyJacket's site, Zhanna's site, and BuckBrooke's site. If this grows as big as I think it can, one of them might pick it up, but if they don't, I could. Otherwise it can just languish here as a topic that pops up again with new listings from time to time. After I posted, I looked in the benchmark gallery and easitly found several more different ones - there's lots out there! I did ponder quite a bit on whether to start with 2 dimensions - agency and type (triangulation, traverse, bench mark, reference mark, etc.) but decided that agency was enough for now, especially if it doesn't end up going to a web page. There are even finer differences (a third dimension) like minor wording and design changes with time, just like coin collecting; benchmarks are reminiscent of roman coins with their various logos written around the circumference. I'm sure that nearly every government agency has benchmarks, including the lowly sewage department. That being said, a webpage depicting benchmarks would be quite interesting if anyone wanted to spend a lot of time doing so. Go to the geocaching homepage, then click on "MY ACCOUNT", then click on "BENCHMARKS" (there are 2 places and it doesn't matter which one you click on now), and then click on "Found it" and you will get a backward-chronological list of all your finds. +Black Dog Trackers
77 now. Some of this gets complicated. I think perhaps the HARN disks, although having different states on them are really national. The Corps of Engineers disks might be the same as well - national, althuogh they have regional stamping. +Black Dog Trackers
OK, 100 now ! A couple here are the same agency but very different styles. Trying to limit this to disks and the rather similar pipe caps. The Federal or Military agencies have (US) while the State, County, City, and other local agencies have a state abbreviation. If the logo on the disk is unclear (like U.S.E.D.), I put the translation afterward, in parentheses. Sometimes the translation is difficult to find and may require looking at more than one PID in the same series, looking at the NGS version of the datasheet, or looking up the abbreviation in a search engine. BuckBrooke will do a website on this collection, at which time I will close down this topic with a pointer to his website. In the meantime - keep 'em coming !!! mloser
KW0535 (PA) Another style of PA Dept of Highways disk. This one has PSDH on it, for PA State Dept of Highways, I imagine. Odd thing is that this disk was monumented the same year as KW0534 and the disks are very different. They were probably set when the bridges were built and only surveyed and stamped in 1942. +Black Dog Trackers
holograph - I think AE3006 (AR) Arkansas-HARN Cooperative Base-Network is a duplicate of AE2989 (US) Harn that we already had. I believe that HARN stations are a national effort of the NGS, but am not 100% sure. That's why I put (US) in front of AE2989. In any case, they are both in Arkansas and the same type. The AE3006 does have the better example, though. I thought that AA5751 (MD) W.S.S.C. Surveys Laurel Office was a dupe with JV2893 (DC) Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission but I see that the disk types are quite different and that I should've put (MD) not (DC) for JV2893. There's one or two WSSC monuments in DC but almost all are MD. Several agencies cross borders now and then as we all know so which state to associate the agency with will be a subjective and statistical decision. mloser - Interesting. I've noticed in the past that there are various wartime disks. I have one in the current list QZ0027 (US) U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey (WWII version) which looks like it was made of iron or something. So now we have at least two. WWII affected cent and nickel coins as we all know, so apparently surveying disks were affected too. BuckBrooke - mebbe I should send you my spreadsheet I fixed up for doing that automatically. I did consider automatically adding the NGS link for each, but it generally seems less useful for this. Once in a while I look in the "original datasheet" to look at the monumentation information and the Stamping item, but almost never get any additional thing from it. Quote Link to comment

+Black Dog Trackers
KK1654 (US) U.S. Geological Survey (with a big ring) ^ The USGS has both the ordinary shape of disk (like the one in the list already) and also the puffy 3-dimensional frisbee-shaped type of disk. This frisbee-shaped one even has a big ring on it, just like a frisbee! I think I've seen one with a small ring, and of course the usual 3-D type with no ring.
