Cave Troll and Eeyore
We are booked on the 0945 ferry ( Lymington to the Isle of Wight ) next Thursday 21.07.05 , returning to the mainland at 20.30. Can anyone recommend some nice easy caches to do on the island as we want to spend most of our time seeing the sights and exploring. Quote Link to comment
Simply Paul
I hear the Vectis series is fun, and the one near the Needles is supposed to be in a great spot. Sorry, that's all the info I have. It's been 14 years since I went to the IOW, and I'm tempted to go back some time soon. House of Boo, what about an event cache? SP Quote Link to comment
jochta
The Vectis series is excellent and will take you all around the island. Bonchurch Landslip and The Pepperpot are easy enough (both have moderate climbs though). There is a different one at the Battery museum at the Needles, you will need to park and walk (or bus!) from the leisure park. Have fun! Quote Link to comment
kitmonster
I've not cached on the IOW but have stayed on holiday. Having a quick look at what's available, I'd certainly head to the needles - too good a location to miss on a trip to the island. I would certainly add the book swap cache GCGPC7 to the list as it's a lovely location and close to where we stayed. There are some lovely walks in that area and surprisingly varied. Also great wildlife - we saw an owl, deer and bees swarming in a hedge. Quote Link to comment
Pharisee
All the Isle of Wight caches are worth doing but if you want to 'maximise' you effort, then consider giving Diamond Isle a miss. It's fun but it'll take you half a day at least to complete. Get an OS map, read the cache sheets and plan your route well or you'll find yourself zig-zagging all over the Island Quote Link to comment
The Klever Boys
Got back from the IOW only yesterday having now cracked all of the IOW caches except "Football Mouth" (off line at the moment) and would agree that the Vectis series are well worth doing. Out of the four initial ones, Vectis W is the longest walk, so you might be wise to leave that one until you have a little more time, but they are all well worth a visit. If you're pushed for time, have a go at "Fly". It's a newish one located at St Helens with a nice walk and a straightforward find. Another "quickie" is "The Lord Palmerston" but you will need to pay £3 to park your car and pay again to visit the "building" that it's in (although it's worth a visit). Avoid "The Pepperpot" as it looks to now be missing and wouldn't be surprised if it goes off line soon. HTH Quote Link to comment
