So there's a White Jeep floating around in Alaska, and low and behold, AK is void from the Jeep Contest this year...Big Deal you say, 650,000 people in Alaska and since we are so far away, we don't deserve a Jeep. Well I say, SEND THE JEEP BACK TO THE FLAT LANDERS!!!

Whipty Doo!!!

End Rant... ;)

Please keep in mind that while the contest is being run THROUGH the geocaching.com website it is actually sponsered by Jeep. Their marketing people set up the rules for the contest not GC.com.

I remember a time when most contests excluded Washington due to state laws about gambling and believe it or not the state considered the cost of the stamp to send in an entry to be a bet on the outcome of the contest and so all those contests were not allowed by state law. Bottom line: The contest organizers generally want all to be allowed to compete, but some local regulations may prohibit that.

Edit to note that my memory goes back to before Alaska was a state.

Hey - we worked really hard to fit that Jeep through the Stargate P61149 Cache! No way we're sending it back! It's travelled from Anchorage to Talkeetna to Homer to Anchorage to Fairbanks to Anchorage to Fairbanks to Valdez to Anchorage... and now it's on its way to Whittier - Alaska's Gateway to Prince William Sound!

Wright the White Jeep was a major logging hit at our recent Alaska Geocoin Distribution cache events in (you guessed it) Fairbanks, Valdez, and Anchorage. We Alaskans are resourceful... and if Jeep hasn't noticed how many of us drive Jeeps that's too bad - for this year! Willys, Flatfenders, FCs, CJs, TJs, YJs, XJs - there's at least one each of the older and more than two dozen of the newer rigs within 4 blocks of my home here - including 2 in my own stable. We'll just have to persuade a few of the 5,001 2005 critters to come North to the Last Frontier... maybe folks heading up for a visit can pack a Jeep or two along! Failing that, perhaps I'll zip-tie a TB tag to some of my friends' Jeeps - and see how many Outsiders get to log those!

All joking aside, Jeep's contest helps underwrite the cost of maintaining this website, adds a bit of zip to the hunt, and I really appreciate their corporate support and their products. Sure I'd like to see the White Jeeps up here, but who knows why they didn't allow it?!? Oh well - there's a trail waiting out there, and it's for nonmotorized use only... see you on it!

Actually that rule is still in effect. If you notice that when a contest requires one to send a self addressed stamped envelope, there is usually fine print that says that Washington Residents only need to send a self-addressed un-stamped envelope.

For those places in the US where the contest is void, you can almost bet it's because of some state or local law that makes it diffucult for the contest sponsor to follow. Often these laws even conflict with each other.

OK I'm calling my state legislators. An envelope costs nearly as much as a stamp!
