Geocoin Value

In a local forum I saw a german geoin offered for 2 regular ones since they cost more to get here in the USA. There is a new geocoin site that charges 10 bucks a coin for quasi-geocoins, yet I'd not trade two RK coins (which don't exist yet...) for one of those.

Most trackable coins cost more due to tracking costs than a non tracking coin but if you collect tracking is pointless.

It will be interesting to see how this shapes out. Maybe collectors should head to Europe wiht a bag of USA coins and trade them two for one while there and vice versa. ;)

I know of the thread in which you talk about.

For coins that are currently in production the value is easy to determine, it is the price of the coin. But for coins that are out of production the value is the price one is willing to pay for the coin.

I don't see him getting any out of production coins for just two german coins that are still in production and for sale. But then there is one born every minute.

What's a ''quasi-geocoin''? (Hope this not another one of our stupid questions that has an obvious answer.)

They aren't GeoCoins in the traditional sense of either an individual's personal coin or a group/state coin being produced. These are being produced by a couple people, who formed a club, who are selling subscriptions to receive monthly coins in the range of about $11 or more per month.

pghlooking's given a good summary. I read the homepage and looked at the coins they plan on making. They are geoaching related but not signature items, or produced by a geocaching group.

That got me to thinking about what exactly a geocoin is. I do think these are related to caching but I also think they are not what has been considered a geocoin so far.

Okay, now I get it.

Examples of non-signature item/non-geocaching group geocoins have been around for some time now. I just think it is becoming more noticeable lately.

1. The Canada Geocoin and the 1st Edition Texas Geocoin were among the first to appear after the Moun10Bike Geocoin became well known. I don't believe that either one (Canada or 1st Edition Texas) was produced by a geocaching group. (Let me know if I'm wrong.) However, given the price, I also don't believe that profit was a major consideration for these two. They both were available in 2002.

2. One of the more beautiful geocoins out there is the Green Man Geocoin by geocachetreasure.com. This is a completely commercial geocoin (i.e., neither a signature item nor a state/group geocoin). It also been around since 2002.

3. For over a year Traveler Tags Wooden Nickels have been for sale.

My opinion? It's all good. I have a 1st Edition Texas and Canada geocoin. At the same time, I'm saving for a new personal geocoin. To each his/her own.
