Logo Cap?

the closest two benchmarks to us are described as metal rods, with a note that says ACCESS TO DATUM POINT IS HAD THROUGH A 5-INCH LOGO CAP. THE MARK IS 0.2 M ABOVE THE DRIVE.

we've gone to both locations, and have had a hard time figuring out which cap is the benchmark - there are several water/sprinkler/sewer caps nearby. what would be on a logo cap? maybe a big W? (we did see one of these at each location, but have also seen them in other places around the neighborhood).

the W caps come off, but we couldn't see what was inside - we're going to go back with a flashlight later. could this be the metal rod we're looking for? (we were hoping for a nice, easy to identify metal disk in the ground!!).

thanks-

Black Dog Tracker's links explain the issue in much better detail.

What you're looking for is essentially a canister w/ a lid that's flush with the ground. The geodetic point of interest itself is the tip of a metal rod inside the canister. You access it via the 5 inch diameter flat lid. The name of the station, say B 438, is written on the rim around the lid. The lid is very flat, and often can get covered by dirt. If you can't see it, look for a flat place in the dirt or grass about 6 in. in diameter. Often if you probe with a short stick or rod you'll get a characteristic thudding sound as you hit the lid on the can; probe around if you hear it. Here's a photo of what one looks like.
