Would you like to win a Rite in the Rain Adventure Travel Journal (worth R149.99) and an all weather pen (worth R59.99) donated by www.geocacher.co.za?

blank%20book.gif

This 4" x 6 1/2" pocket sized hard-bound book has 78 sheets of horizontal-line page pattern and 15 pages of handy travel reference material. It fits easily into your back pocket so you can travel anywhere protecting your memories and trip notes.

37_med.jpg

Pencils work great on "Rite in the Rain". For those times when you need a pen, use the All-weather Pen. The ideal ball point pen for use outdoors, with its pressurized ink cartridge and permanent ink. Writes underwater and upside down, and it will write in all weather conditions, even temperatures as low as - 50 F, fine point.[br]

Rules of the competition

1. The competition is for South Africans only

2. You must submit a photo here on the forum that was taken while geocaching. It can be of the cache itself, anything out of the ordinary on the trip or one of the scenery or wildlife near the cache.

3. You need to name the cache that the photo relates to.

4. A description of what the photo is about must be included on the thread.

5. I will close the thread around end of July. Then everybody that submitted a photo must send me an email with their vote on what is the best photo and story. This vote and my decision will then decide the winner. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE FOR YOUR OWN PHOTO! (this is for obvious reasons!)

4. I will then announce the winner and send him the nice prize!

One catch to the competition is that all photos submitted will be used on the GASA webpage under the photo section.

Great!!!

We are off to the KNP for a long weekend from 1 to 4 July. I am also looking at placing another cache around the park (obviously inside one of the enclosed picnic spots, as well as checking that the area does allow for a proper cache placement),

This should make for great / stunning photos.

:yikes: Nothing more beautiful than a great African sunrise or sunset.

So we can put up pics from caches we placed? Also, can we put in pics from locationless caches (he he, this is for GlobalRat, who said I shouldn't do so many locationless caches  ) You might need to put a link up here on how to put images up, for those too lazy to use the search function on this forum. (Who? Me? Never!)

Adding a Picture to a Forum Post

1. Your picture must be on the internet somewhere -- not on the hard drive. If you want to share a personal photo, but don't have web space, upload it to a cache log, cache page or your profile page.

2. Copy the URL for the image so that it's in your clipboard.

3. Compose your forum post. When you want to insert the image, click on the IMG button in the top "Code Buttons" section.

4. A dialog box will pop up, prompting you for the URL of the image. Paste the URL from your clipboard into the box (Ctrl-V = paste) and click "OK."

5. Preview your post to make sure it works!

If you are having trouble, try practicing in the test thread that is pinned at the top of the "Getting Started" forum.

How do I Get a Photo to Display on my Cache Page?

You can upload an image right to your cache page, or you can hyperlink to an image hosted elsewhere on the internet -- but NOT on your hard drive. Let's use this cache page as an example. The owner of that cache wanted to show off the beautiful view of a city's skyline. To do that, the owner followed these steps:

1. Click on the "upload images" button at the top right of the cache page.

2. Navigate to your photo directory on your hard drive, and identify the correct picture. Give your photo a name ("View from West End Overlook" in the example) and upload it.

3. The photo now appears on the cache page as a little camera icon with a hyperlink on its name. Look for it just below the maps and just above where the logs are.

4. Click on the hyperlink to open the photo onto its own page with its own URL.

5. Copy that URL from the browser address box into the clipboard.

6. Put the cache page into edit mode, make sure that the box is checked to say that you are using html on the cache page, and then insert the html code for the image so that the photo will display in the center of the cache page:

CODE

<center><img src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/a0f1a0a9-af25-4574-9dc8-cd46521ca68e.jpg"></center><br>

You can see the results on the sample cache page! Bear in mind that this requires the rest of your cache page to include proper html commands. Read The quick and dirty guide to bad html for your cache page if you need help on the image command or any others, like paragraph breaks.

Rodney

Use the instructions as outlined above. I figure the easiest way is to upload a photo the spesific cache you would like to enter in the competition and then enter its URL here on this thread.

So we can put up pics from caches we placed? Also, can we put in pics from locationless caches (he he, this is for GlobalRat, who said I shouldn't do so many locationless caches  )

Yes any photo form a cache, locationless cache as long it is South African..

AND I also say to many locationless caches is just to get numbers up and no good!

This picture was taken while we "doing" Table Mountain 2.

I desperately wanted to visit the end cache for the TB Race.

We had no idea the hike that we would take on.

My son, Jeremy, is so used to being carried on my back, that he often nods off.

My Wife took this pic. while we were contemplating which route to follow.

Enjoy.

This photo was taken by my dad. We were on a hunting trip in the Limpopo Province, not so long ago. This tree is possibly the largest single stem tree in the Southern Hemisphere. I'm not sure of the history behind the whole thing, but there's apparently a big debate going on if this or another tree is the largest. There are apparently many criteria that go into measuring a tree like this. What amazed me most was that the tree doesn't have a hard bark, it's actually quite soft. I placed Land of the Giants just after visiting here, and the coordinates for this tree are in that cache listing.

(Note: The tree is on private property, so you'll have to do some detective work if you want to visit it  )

There's no real story to this picture. We were at Swartkops Airforce Museum, looking at all the planes and things, and I took this picture. I also did two locationless caches here  (Warbirds and Av8er) . The jet is a Mirage III, and in the black t-shirt is AE_James, fellow member of Team Ancient Explorations. I thought the clouds looked really cool in the background.

Taking a group of off-roaders down to the Quarry Cache, one of the guys decided to try and overtake the convoy of vehicles. He left the trail, heading across a grassy field, when, to his horror, the Discovery started to sink! The "grass" was floating weeds.

It took us two hours recover the vehicle and then tow it out, over a seriously rugged off-road trail. Most stressful recovery I have ever done!

I think this is one of the most scenic caches I have been to. (I have not been to Cape Town yet  ) This is The Towers at Marakele

This picture was taken on the way down and the views from here were enough to take your breath away. Pictured is the new Brick Cachemobile, after doing cache number 101.

I had an agreement with GlobalRat that I will do his Klipspringer Lookout as my 100th cache, as he did Sammy Marks as his 100th, after being stuck on 99 for a long time. As I was going to be in the area I did this cache too. A just reward for a very long trip...

I think if we get enough photos, we can even look at putting them in separate categories. I saw photos that will fit in the Aaahhh, Nature, Boys and their toys and The Downright Dumb categories.

And no, the Landie does not fit into the Boys and their Toys category, the jet does.

Hi

If you want scenery and a sense of total isolation, then look no further than the Baviaans Kloof wildernis area in the EC. There are now two caches in this area "Just another brick in the wall" and "The Hermit's Cave". The road is gravel and after heavy rains a vehicle with good ground clearance will be required to travel from Patensie to Willowmore.

These photo's were taken when I placed "Just another brick in the wall". The life in the kloof is very diverse and with the plentifull water available, it is also in abundance. No hunting in the area also means that the game do not run away from approaching vehicles. The narrow and steep passes can be hair raising for the unitiated, but great fun nevertheless.

After looking at all these photos, I just can't wait to get to the Park.

Just as a suggestion and I think it will make for a great gift or cache prize, how about creating a CD of all the photos. I would like to use them (if I may) as an ever changing screen saver.

Here is my favourite pic, taken on top of Dumbe Mountain, retrieving Dumbe Mountain cache (GCKF3Z). The pic was taken by the owner of the cache I&J. I&J was the first cacher I ever met, imagine my surprise when he said "Hey wat maak jy?" To get to the cache you have to climb down a crevice in the rock...

I'm will be using the photos on my website in the GASA section.

This is the reason I would like to have the name of the cache the photo is about!

Maybe I can then also put an CD together about all the photos with the info on the photo and the caches. I have a lot of the small 8" CD's that I can use.

I was quietly and happily scouting around, looking for a place to hide a new cache when I got the feeling I was being watched.

Looking around, I could see nothing untoward, so carried on. Walking up a steep earthen bank I noticed fresh tracks in the surface and realised that there was a distinct possibility that I was in BIG trouble.

Sure enough, heading back to the landrover, I discovered that my initial feeling was spot on. I WAS being watched.

In the bush at the end of the clearing, stood a rather large and extremely curious African buffalo, regarded as one of the most dangerous animals of the big five.

He was a straggler, coming along the trail behind the rest of the herd, whose tracks I had seen on the bank.

Fortunately, he decided that today was not a good day to become angry with frail humans who dared to tread on his turf, and waited patiently for me to get back into the landrover before ambling past on his way to join the rest of his herd.

Adrenaline pumped, I can tell you, big time!!!

Needless to say, there is a warning on the cache page that buffalo HAVE been seen in the area!!!!!

Ahhhhhhhh - the pleasures of geocaching in Africa!!!!!!

Cache = "Shongweni Trail"

Geocacher_coza, I assume you will be crediting the photographer (cacher) along with the photo that you publish on your website?

There are some really nice photographs posted so far.

I think if we get enough photos, we can even look at putting them in separate categories
Warthog

Like this idea as the photographs submitted so far are of varying categories and will be difficult to compare fairly under one global category. Geocacher_coza, perhaps a number of categories?? Of course the submitting cacher would have to choose a category for their photograph.

Go and look at the photos already on my site. That is why I want a story and also the cache name so all this can be included with the photo (Hope this is good enough for you! )

The rules was spelt out beforehand and beforehand I told the people I will be using the photos on my site, so if that does not meet someones approval, please do not enter!AS for the categories. I think we keep is simple and only have one for the competition. After the prize is given out we kan decided on what categories it will be put on the website and the CD.

Windfarm GCBB26 in the Western Cape. It's a magic spot when the breeze is up. This was my first cache - I found it purely by chance because I remembered reading somewhere that a geocache existed there. That evening I registered with geocaching.com. Forty-eight hours later I had bought myself a GPS receiver.

Cheers,

No need for the defense...... a yay or nay would have done.

Done as you have suggested, i.e. looked at your site. They seem to be all yours... but not sure...one of the first questions that arises in my mind...perhaps I'm unique in the world.... but I like photography and it's nice to know who the artist is.

Just think it will be nice to have the pic with the caption (EXAMPLE)Dumbe Mountain cache (GCKF3Z) taken by Africard..... Story... that's all.

Personally, if I look at the pics I'd like to know who's taken them! See no reason why this should be a secret?? Also, looking at some of the self portraits, it's nice to have an idea of what the folks look like that one comes into contact with over the forums, offline. Most of us may never meet each other, but if I'm walking past Africard on a caching quest I'll recognise him now.

This is going off topic, but I think once the photo's are published with the story, it will be nice if the cacher is listed with URL to their GC profile, and the particular cache hyperlinked to the cache. This way people can browse the photo's, see who the cacher is that took trhe photo....see which cache it is.... the photo may tempt them to do the cache! Think about it!

Back to the photo's though...Great pic Africard...really captures a great Geocaching moment..... oops probably not allowed to campaign for photo's :P

I may look for a nice pic on one of my GEOCACHING adventures (too few unfortunately)... but probably spoilt my chances now

Hasta la vista!

I have to say I agree with Miskruier. It would be nice if credit was given where is was due. Maybe you will do this on your site, but it has not been updated yet.

Anyhow, herewith another photo for consideration:

Cache:

Locomotion

Story:

These old locomotives are the remnant of the narrow gauge rail lines. The line between Port Elizabeth and Hankey is called the Apple Express and was used to transport - you guessed it - apples from the fertile Langkloof to PE for the market and export.

The old railyard is located close to PE's main beaches and tourist attractions. Sadly the old carraiges are rotting away and these locomotives are used for spares for the one that is still going - which is used to carry tourist instead of apples these days.

The railyard really is a look into yesteryear and has great photo opertunities - if only I was a better photographer!

When are you updating your site ? Did you not go through a whole feedback routine ?

In two to three weeks time.

-Busy re-doing the Geoshop to make it more user friendly- more pages so it loads quicker.

-Optimize the page for 1024x768

-New items in the Geoshop

-Members pages updated

-Update more on the safety page

I still need more input for the GASA pages but NOBODY is giving input. (That is why I started the competition)

Tell me one thing---- Why do I have to account for my actions to you anyway???? :D Again I must refer you back to the rules:

1.The competition is for South Africans only

2. You must submit a photo here on the forum that was taken while geocaching. It can be of the cache itself, anything out of the ordinary on the trip or one of the scenery or wildlife near the cache.

3. You need to name the cache that the photo relates to. (Why do you think I asked for this)4. A description of what the photo is about must be included on the thread. (And this)

AND what gave you the idea that I was going to do it any different than giving the people credit for their photos. THAT WAS THE WHOLE IDEA. To show the world our caches and country :D Maybe I should have written like this "YES sir miskruier, will do as you demand, sir!

If this turns out into a slogging match we can just call it all off.

Done as you have suggested, i.e. looked at your site. They seem to be all yours...

I have invited the forum members more than once to submit photos and stories to the GASA pages. ONE story was submitted and it was published and the person that wrote it DID get credit for it. (Hope this meets with your approval MR. Miskruier)

It doesn't matter how hard you try - there will always be those who find fault (or perceived faults) with whatever you suggest.

You have my blessing and permission (even though it was implied by entering the competition) to use my photographs on your site, with or without credit. I really couldn't care less. I know which photos are mine - that's all I, or anyone else, needs to know.

And now a public apology for not supplying material to GASA. Both an incredible work-load and a serious bout of the dreaded flu have caused my best intentions to fade away.

I will be supplying material soon. Promise! :D

Link to comment

......... and another thing .......

if you don't like the idea, don't enter.

but more than that .... if you don't like the idea ...... keep your thoughts to yourself. Other entrants seem to have no problems with this light-hearted competition.

Keep up the good work, geocacher-sa, at least you are doing something to promote South African geocaching.

My "Nobody is giving" input is not all that true.

Azaruk- YOU did send me a email saying you will contribute as soon as you have time and you did contribute in setting up the GASA part of the site!

Warthog and Whostops did send their info for publication-- I just need to add it when I update my site.

Rodney sends me emails often with suggestions-- like a geocaching t-shirt coming soon!

Miskruier-- My humble apologies for jumping off the deep end :D

Lets stop the s%$^(%($$(*^$t and get the photos in!

Apology accepted. I was in no way criticizing this competition, or the fact that photo’s would be published, I merely wanted to know whether the cacher taking the photo would be listed, as this wasn’t clear…. That’s all.

Back to the photo’s then.

Azaruk

but more than that .... if you don't like the idea ...... keep your thoughts to yourself

I never at one stage mentioned that I didn't like the idea, I had one simple question which I wanted an answer to...and I made a suggestion of what would be nice to see on the completed page. As for keeping my thoughts to myself.... a Forum is a place where one shares thoughts and asks questions!! :D

There is always more to be discovered when out caching, apart from locating the cache itself. These pretty vygies were in bloom all over Table Mountain along the Pipe Track. They relate to the Oudekraal April Fool cache, which was a wonderful way to spend a Friday afternoon while others were slaving away over a hot computer.

Just an aside on the photos which have already been submitted: when posting them to the cache page, they have to be less than 125kB and smaller than 600 pixels. This does reduce the image quality, and it would be a shame for people's photos to suffer this fate. Should we submit them to geocacher.co.za in their full glory too? I might have missed this bit, so flame me if you will.

This photo is another of my caches, "Crystal Pools".

This is one of the pools that you have to swim across with your backpack waterproofed, and scramble up the other side.

The last time i visited this cache, my geomuggle friend was climbing up a slightly steeper mini-cliff to get out of the second pool on route. A small slip resulted in him having a delightful tumble to the pool below, much to everyones mirth, except his own of course. Luckily he got up second time round.

(Note: there is a walking way around for the slightly milder folk!)

There is a also a good chance of a face to face baboon encounter here as well.

Only discovered the forums recently. Hope we are not too late to submit some photos! Although all of our photos are special to me I don't think any of them have a chance of beating some of those that were already posted. At least now we have a chance of voting too.

The first photo we're submitting is a different angle of one already posted by Africard. Due to our mutual interest in paragliding, we were both at the KZN paragliding championship and hence the coincidence of cache owner and finder meeting in real life at the cache site (Dumbe Mountain). From this picture as well as the one submitted by Africard, it's clear that people with an above avearge waist will not be able to retrieve the cache.

4cc3c1ff-b535-445e-9fae-639c7a4744c4.jpg

The next picture is of paragliders taking off and circling in hot rising air (thermalling) during the 2004 competition. Flights are recorded for scoring purposes by means of GPSr - suprising that there's not a lot more paragliders into geocaching! (Dumbe Mountain).

ed2d2e31-e5fb-4ede-9f55-8f175224a550.jpg

The next pixture is of our latest find. (NebrascacheZA). I forgot to take a torch along and nearly turned around when we got out of the car at the site. Fortunately a torch was not necessary at all - it would have helped to have a small kid to send in though!

The last two were taken at our latest hide, Seekoeirivier.

Haven't posted any pictures yet, as none of mine are close to any of these ones, but we will hopefully in the near future submit a few.

However, I don't know if it is just me that is very close to Arica and see Africa in every thing, but with a bit of creativity one can see the outline of the African continent in the I&Js first photo of Dumbe Mountain, by only looking at the lighter areas in the photo.

or am I losing it?

Ever thought of what goes through a cache's mind just before it is found. Well if I had to see this once or twice a week I would probably have to quit my job and open a crystal shop back in CT .

This photo is taken at Outre from inside the cache. Part 2 of QFC is sticking his head around the closing rock to get the cache. What a sight!
