I know of Washington Road that goes through the forest but are there caches that are in a close proximity to the road. Also, are the caches close to the road and is a 4x4 vehicle suggested? mortonfox Posted June 20, 2005 Share Posted June 20, 2005 On my last few trips into Wharton, I was able to get to some caches by parking on Carranza Road and E. Sandy Ridge Road, and walking to them. Some other caches are also accessible via Hampton Road, starting from the entrance just North of the Atsion ranger station. None of those need a 4x4, or my car would still be there. However, if large puddles have developed, don't drive into those without 4x4. Quote Link to comment

Thanks for your help. YES. Bring a 4X4 if you have one! We went there with a Saturn and didn't do very well. Most of the one's are centered around a road called Quaker Bridge Road, which runs about 5 o6 miles down the center of the forest. It has been leveled recently and even a Lexus can make it down. Right Bella ? If you do a search around the cache called Quaker Bridge, you can look at the web page and the cache owner will usually specify if it is a 4x4'er. I spend multiple hours riding out there and would be glad to show you around. It's pretty easy when you get the hang of it. No trip to Wharton is complete without doing the awesome night cches out there. Which are also, by the way, right off of Quaker. The entrance is on Rt. 206, right by the ranger station and Atsion Lake. Hope this helps.... Lavarock Quote Link to comment

Trowel and I discovered that there are a stretch of caches along Hampton Furnace Rd and then Glossy Sprung Rd, that are easily navigated by the average take. I don't know if you should that the Camaro down the road, but the typical sedan should make it fine. The two roads meet at the ghost town of Hampton Furnace, Glossy Sprung starts off of Carranza Road, and Hapmton Furnace starts at 206. You can probably drive and park within 1/2 mile of most caches 500ft for some, less then a 100ft for one or two listed below! Starting from Carranza Rd. Wharton Boot Camp Park within 100ft What's a Lake View Worth Part Deux - less the a mile walk, you can retrieve Trowel's boots while your there. Home Swamp Home What was here Park within 200ft Big Puddle - Little Pond Park within 100ft East Stokes Rd Bypass I love caching in the Pine Barrens. With this list and the ones above, you can get a good taste of Wharton SP. There are also a bunch of paddle/canoe caches. The cache descripts are all pretty good, so you can tell exactly what your getting into. However, Trowel32 and I have found that the difficulty and Terrain ratinga are usually a little high. I went today to the forest to retrieve one of my caches from last year's Statewide hunt, and wanted to grab a few. I got one of the many tried. The bugs were terrible especially the flies. Where do they all come from. I will have to come back in the winter when there are no bushes or bugs. I did have a fun time driving around the many roads in my Jeep. I do not suggest anyone to take a car that does not have 4x4 or high clearance, even on Quakerbridge road. I did not need to use the 4wheel drive at all but there were points where traction was lost or the sand was very deep. None the less I had a great time. Quote Link to comment
