solid-rock-seekers Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I am looking to replace my "refunded-under-extended-warranty" Garmin Vista GPS. I am trying to decide between the Vista C, GPSMAP 60CS and GPSMAP 76CS. I used MapSource TOPO with my Garmin Vista and loved it. The only problem was that it couldn't hold all of the maps I wanted for "regularly visited" locations. As a result, I would often find myself "driving off the edge of the map" and have nothing more than the basemap. I do 95% of my travel within the boundaries of New England (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT), and would like to be able to load maps (both CitySelect and TOPO) into my GPS for all six of these states. If any of these GPS can hold all those maps, that would be a big plus. Trips out of New England are rare enough (and sufficiently "special occasions" that I will be able to remember to reload maps into the GPS) but it would be really nice to have all of New England in the GPS all the time. Can anybody that has these mapsets tell me the memory sizes required for all of New England? I don't yet have CitySelect, so I can't figure out how much memory it will require for all New England. I do have TOPO, and it looks like the 175 maps which cover all of New England will require 37.4 MB. How much more space will I need to also load all of New England in CitySelect? Thanks! Quote
wickedsprint Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 City select takes up quite a bit more, you should look hard at the 76 series since they hold 115mb, I will try and get a snapshot with dimensions tonight when I get home if noone else has posted them for you. Quote
david&diana Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 The City Select maps for New England take 71 MB. You can reduce that to 67.9 MB if you don't include the SW corner of Connecticut since those map segments are mostly New York. A 76CS should be able to hold both City Select and Topo for New England with 7-10 MB to spare. Quote
briansnat Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 (edited) Here are the City Select maps. Topo would give you far more coverage and Topo and CS would give less. 24 megs of City Select coverage using southern NH as the center (with autorouting on). This is what you would get in a Vista C: 56 megs of City Select coverage from the same center. This is what you would see in a 60C: 115 megs of CS coverage. This is what you would get into a 76C: Edited June 18, 2005 by briansnat Quote
solid-rock-seekers Posted June 18, 2005 Author Posted June 18, 2005 Thanks to all of you who replied for the great detailed information, plus the sample maps of how much coverage I could get in the various units. It looks like I would need the GPSMAP 76CS in order to be able to load up all of New England for both CitySelect and TOPO. Thanks! Quote
