Tranziq
Howdy all, Strumer has introduced me to the wonderful world of Geocaching... saying that I transformed my Ipaq 5455 Pocket PC into a GPS Device. I got the GPS addon but now i need your guys opinion on which software to best utilize for Geocaching and Navigation. Thanks in advance Here are the software that is says that it is natively compatible with • Precision Mapping Traveler®5.0 • Rand McNally StreetFinder® • Microsoft Streets & Trips®(2002 and above) • DeLorme Street Atlas®(8.0 and above) • Fugawi®Mapping Software • TomTom's™ Navigator Tranziq Brent David Edited June 16, 2005 by Tranziq Quote Link to comment
Xangxa
I use GPXsonar and it can also export to pushpins for PocketStreets (included with Microsoft Streets & Trips). For GPS functions I use GPStuner. For turn-by-turn voice prompt navigation I use iNAV's iGuidance. To enable one GPS to drive multiple applications I use Franson's GPSgate. I'm very happy with all the packages. Quote Link to comment
Renegade Knight
Streets and Trips does not autoroute on the PDA. If you want to whittle down that list, rule out any of the ones that don't autoroute. Then out of what's left, see what works with GPXSonar which exports to a few Pocket PC file formats. Quote Link to comment
Tranziq
thanks, i found GPS Tuner today after i posted and it works great for caching. I will test out some others to find a good autoroute one. thanks guys Tranziq Quote Link to comment
RumJungle
If you are looking for navigation features like you would find in a handheld GPS, has LOTS of support for Geocaching and performs well, take a look at BeeLineGPS. It looks as there will be a new version released in the near future ( beta link ). Quote Link to comment
toneLokation
You might be interested in my alpha2num converter tool for paperless caching. Read about it in this thread. Quote Link to comment
as77
In addition to GPS Tuner and BeeLineGPS, other programs for off-road navigation include Vito Navigator II, Navio and GpsDash. I used to use Vito Navigator, it's cheap and does an OK job. I like Navio, too. Quote Link to comment
NightPilot
Mapopolis will also run on PPCs, and does autorouting, autorerouting, and voice directions. Quote Link to comment
Alan2
I use Mapopolis. You can try it for free for 9 days. Check their site. Quote Link to comment
toneLokation
I also use/love mapopolis, i highly reccomend its use, along with gpxtomaplet.exe to add geocaches to your map view... Quote Link to comment
Team Chevelle
Indeed. I'll throw another thumbs-up in for Mapopolis. Great stuff there. I run my Pocket Query here, copy the file to my PDA for use with GPXView (others with WM2003 devices may prefer GPXSonar), and also run it through the maplet converter (just mentioned above) so that all of the caches show up in Mapopolis. Makes it very easy to get close to the cache when you are just driving along the highway and notice one coming up! Tap and route to it and you're there! - John... Quote Link to comment
Greymane
I would echo the support for Mapopolis. I use it quite a bit. However, do you plan on doing urban caches or hitting the trails to find your caches? Most of the street mapping software does nothing for you once you leave the road. I use Memory-Map Navigator (similar to Fugawi, but a more flexible program). It uses topo maps and aerial photos for off-road navigation. It does not do turn-by-turn directions like street navigation software, however. Quote Link to comment
geoduck.5
BeeLine gets my vote... new version (beta) just released. BeeLine Quote Link to comment
sawdust
I use Mapopolis. Is is first rate! Sawdust92 Quote Link to comment
Alan2
I use Mapopolis off road as well as on road. It gives you a bearing arrow and compass rose, distance to cache, current coordinates, etc. It's not as good as my Vista, but then again, it's not a Vista. Quote Link to comment
Team Chevelle
I don't use Mapopolis "in the field." By the time I'm that close, I'm just using my GPS itself, of course. I just use Mapopolis to get me as close as possible on the road -- then I leave my PDA in the vehicle and head off with my GPS... - John... Quote Link to comment
RumJungle
Mapopolis is good for navigating the road. However, if you still want to use the PPC as an off-road navigation device, BeeLineGPS will act as a traditional handheld like your Garmin or Magellan with the added features to support Geocaching.
