+Hide 'n Sneak Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 I've seen rave reviews from some of the 100, and 200 series Explorist models, but nothing on the 300. I want to spend no more than $200.00, but want the most features, (that will reliably work) for the money. I can certainly plop down 200 for something I've never used, but I figured the GPS community here could better speak for me. I've been using an older Magellan GPS 315, and have piggy backed on the geocaches with friends Garmin Vistas and Legends. Rugged and durable are a must, I tend to get wet a lot.. . I dunno if its loss of balance, or if I'm magnetically attracted to fast moving water. PC connectivity would be nice, but not a must, I don't mid hand entering numbers. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. hide_n_sneak Caching in the Carolinas! Quote
robertlipe Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 The biggest downfall of the 300 - and it's a dealbreaker for much of this crowd - is the absence of a host computer hookup, which you've already identified. If you value a compass/barometer/thermometer over a PC connection, the ex300 will be hard to beat. That tradeoff isn't worth it for most geocachers. The Geko 300 will be about the closest you can muster with a sensor kit and PC connection, but it doesn't do maps. In the absence of specific questions and the presence of a semi-loaded question that already has an exemption for the "obvious" exception, it sounds like you're asking for permission. Go for it. flir67 Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 check out the ilowerence line of gps products. they have a color gps held held unit I think thats going for around 200.00, (I think its called the iFINDER® H2O) do a search on google for their stuff. I've haven't heard much of anything about their products from users. it looks like a decent unit. Quote
reidster Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 You should definitely consider the Lowrance iFinder H2O and it's less than $200 at TigerGPS and PageComputers. The display is not color. It is however 16-level grayscale with great resolution. We iFinder owners are small, but growing, bunch here...Lowrance Users H2O Recommended eTrex vs Magellan Rants $ Raves Quote
+Hide 'n Sneak Posted June 16, 2005 Author Posted June 16, 2005 Well, I have finally joined the ranks of the Garmin Owners! My new Etrex Vista should be here within a week or so. I have friends that own the basic etrex, the legend, and the vista, and with their finds history, it was a clear choice for me. Quote
+geekster Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I had an Explorist 300 that I sold, then I went out and bought a Garmin Etrex Vista for the PC connection capability, and while I like the unit alot, the Explorist beats it hands down for reception under trees, etc. Quote
