SlytherinAlex Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 No idea about what a coal post is until now. But a quick google came up with this. HTH - Quote
+Sue and Bernie Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Someone knows all about them, we've visited two: Coal Post #14 ...and: Coal Post #19 Quote
+Chris n Maria Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 OK folks, I've managed to bully the PDF file into some sort of shape and then used Waypoint Workbench to export in a load of different formats. I'll try to make them available on our website when I get home tonight. HTH Chris Quote
+kbootb Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 For those not in the know, the main info is here. But I guess that is where bones1 got the OS list from, so I've not added anything to the original request When I was out doing a coal post cache I bumped into someone that I thought was a geocacher, but turned out she was a coal post spotter. She said that there is a local museum somewhere in Potters Bar that has some info on coal posts. So I guess what we are looking for is an easy way to convert about 200 OS co-ords into lat/lon? Any ideas? Quote
+leecee Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 So I guess what we are looking for is an easy way to convert about 200 OS co-ords into lat/lon? Any ideas? Use the free software called GridInquest. You can feed it a text file of OSGB coordinates and it'll batch convert em to Lat/Long and vice versa. Quote
+The Hokesters Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Oh no not another Table for Deego to setup! Quote
NickPick Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Splendid!!! Sorry, Ali, I don't think that you can get another icon for it! Quote
+Chris n Maria Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 The full set of Coalposts are available in a variety of different downloadable formats here. Enjoy Chris Quote

+Alibags Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 Splendid!!! Sorry, Ali, I don't think that you can get another icon for it! WAH!! Actually, I think it's high time we had a UK icon that was not avialable to those in the USA. When I win the lottery, perhaps I should bribe gc.com for one? Dare I say it, a little trig icon perhaps? Quote
NickPick Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 a little trig icon perhaps? That'd be nice, and it would please some people Quote

We'd love it if you could get it set up by September. Then we could add that to our list of found icons while we're there. We figure we're going to have to come back another time anyway to do a REAL visit to London and the rest of the U.K. Maybe you'll have something worked out by then. As far as we're concerned, you SHOULD have some sort of cache type that's unique to the U.K. We can't imagine why anyone would object. Quote
nobby.nobbs Posted June 11, 2005 Posted June 11, 2005 how about a heritage cache where the place has to be somewhere that's been in human use for over 500 years?? yeah i know the native americans did have some locations which would qualify but mostly this would rule out america. just an idea. Quote
Lactodorum Posted June 11, 2005 Posted June 11, 2005 A major development is underway at Groundspeak and is expected to be announced pretty soon (no I don't know exactly when). As I understand it you will be able to have "Heritage Caches" then. I'm not sure if you'll be able to define new icons but I suspect you will. A spin off of this development means that "Virtual caches" and locationless ones will be allowed again. Don't ask for more detail as I don't have it and even if I did I'd be taken out and shot for divulging it Quote
+The Hokesters Posted June 11, 2005 Posted June 11, 2005 Thanks for that intruiging news Lacto. Can I ask if it might be worth delaying the UK GeoCoin a little longer if this 'development' might be used to track non-US GeoCoins? It may well save a lot of work in the long run if we were to get a nod sooner rather than later. Simon Quote
nobby.nobbs Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 sounds fun and interesting...... so now we have to sit back and try to wait for this news to break.....shouldn't be a problem i mean we're all calm sensible patient people aren't we? Quote
