+Jamie Z
Wow, cool! I've been known to use Polaris as a north indicator, and my watch (which has a 24-hour hour hand) as a compass, but that shadow trick is cool. I'm going to have to try it to see how accurate it is. Thanks for the link! Jamie Quote Link to comment

+15Tango
The same info is also in the Army Survival Manual--there's a pretty good thread somewhere in here about that manual. Think Globally, Act Locally Quote Link to comment
+Geo-Actuary
Very interesting. I'm gonna have to think about this one! But what if you don't have a compass and it's cloudy? :-) Nothing Worth Knowing Reveals Its Secrets Easily - A Friend Quote Link to comment

MTET
Using a pin or needle as a compass: In order for any survival expedition to be successful, you must have the right materials. To use a needle as a compass, you must have a silk or other type of polarizing cloth. This is all you will be needing (aside from the pin of course!) a) Rub the needle on the cloth in one direction (it doesn't matter either up or down. It must be rubbed in a dragging motion IN ONE DIRECTION ONLY!!! Place the now magnetized/polarized needle on a leaf or other such floatable material in a small motionless pool of water. The side of the needle that was dragged across the silk will point North. Throw the pumpkin at the tree, unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny. Quote Link to comment

Think Globally, Act Locally You should NOT carry the Army Survival Manual with you in the woods. In that manual, it specifically states so. It says that if you are captured by enemy forces, they could read the manual and thereby be able to counter-act to your escape attempts. *grin* Mike. KD9KC. El Paso, Texas.
