Using a pin or needle as a compass: In order for any survival expedition to be successful, you must have the right materials. To use a needle as a compass, you must have a silk or other type of polarizing cloth. This is all you will be needing (aside from the pin of course!)

a) Rub the needle on the cloth in one direction (it doesn't matter either up or down. It must be rubbed in a dragging motion IN ONE DIRECTION ONLY!!!

;) Place the now magnetized/polarized needle on a leaf or other such floatable material in a small motionless pool of water. The side of the needle that was dragged across the silk will point North.

Throw the pumpkin at the tree, unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny.

I usually wear cotton or wool while out in the woods. Where I grew up, if you wore silk in the woods, being lost was the least of your worries. icon_biggrin.gif

You can't be lost if you don't care where you are.

You should NOT carry the Army Survival Manual with you in the woods. In that manual, it specifically states so. It says that if you are captured by enemy forces, they could read the manual and thereby be able to counter-act to your escape attempts.
