'pay-as-you-go' Road Charge Plan

Recommended Posts

And finally since we British no longer have a car manufacturing industry, whist France have no less than three leading brands, who are we to tell them they have it wrong?

Three brands but two companies... Peugeot and Citroën, brands of a company called PSA, are as close as Austin and Morris were in the 70s.

Maybe if Britain had ploughed tens of billions of pounds of taxpayers' money into its car industry, and imposed ludicrous protectionist quotas, it could have had a similar story. France was still trying to keep British-built, European-engineered Nissans out, being "Japanese imports", until about 1999, trying every trick in the book to demonstrate that 70% European content wasn't 70%, then trying to get the EU to put it up to 80%, etc.

Then in 1999, Renault bought Nissan, and suddenly everything changed. Funny that.
