  1. After a recent issue with my Zumo, I wonder if it is an SD card error..IF your device has an SD card. I had 32gb card but it was not being seen. it was corrupt card issue. Worth a look if you have an SD card My issue was that the card was appearing on the computer when plugged din via USB..so it was usable ..buyt the garmin coudl not access it despite it being seen by the Mac whilst the card was in the garmin..
  2. There are a few apps for garmin devices out with which you can find nearby geocaches. What are the best ones? Do they support the Garmin Lily 2?
  3. I rarely use my phone for geocaching, preferring the Garmin, but on the rare occasions I have, I've also observed that problem, although it's not consistent and doesn't always do it. One that particularly comes to mind was when I was planning some virtual waypoints for a multi and realised when I got to the location that I'd forgotten to bring the Garmin, so I recorded my preliminary coordinates on my phone so I could at least make a start on the cache page. Two of the waypoints, about 14 metres apart, were recorded with the same coordinates on my phone, fortunately I noticed at the time and was able to correct it by walking a good distance away from each one and coming back. The same thing probably happened on a multi published by another local cacher, as two of her waypoints, from memory about 20 metres apart, had almost the same coordinates. There's probably some "clever" bit of code in either the app or the phone's GPS service that thinks it can save a bit of battery life by not taking readings when it thinks you're stationary.
  4. I use both, but probably 90% of the time with my Garmin Oregon 450. Gonna be a sad day if that ever croaks. I tried the Garmin 700 0r 750 and really disliked it. Many times, for no reason I could figure, it would just stop working. As for the phone (iPhone) I always use that to get directions to the next cache. My first Garmin was a Legend CX. Kind of wish I had kept it.
  5. I started geocaching back in 2006. Lots of fun with my old Magellan and printing out cache descriptions. From what I remember the GPS seemed a lot more accurate back then. It would get me within a few feet of the cache and depending on how small or how well it was hidden it would take some looking but eventually find it. I got away from it for probably the last 12 years or so and recently got back into it and figured the phone would be much better these days. My phone won't even update that close and usually is stuck in a spot until I'm 50 feet away then it will update. So narrowing down coords is impossible and pretty much rely on the map image and trying to figure out which tree it's marked closest to. Is there a way to get better GPS updating on the phone? Samsung Galaxy 23 ultra? So I figured I would try an actual GPS unit again and ordered a Garmin etrex 22x. It seems better and shows every foot updating but I still had FTF on caches that were supposed to be easy and the one I did find was showing me 15' away from the listed coordinates. Has GPS lost accuracy or is there something off in calibration or has it always been this way and I'm just misremembering how it was in 06-12? It's fun either way but just seemed different now.
  6. Deletion of BIn files from EDM folder did not solve the slow startup issue Deletion of .fit files from dfrive:\Garmin\Activities as suggested by helpdesk Garmin did not solve the issue I'm making some progress using GGZ (GSAK)
  7. This is AKERDoc. I live in Alaska and started caching in 2008. I started in the summer of 2008 in Saranac Lake while running using a Garmin GPS enabled watch. I am a retired ER Doc who lives in Eagle River, AK.
  8. Forgive me if this sounds like an obvious question, but have you checked to see if the memory on your Garmin is actually full?
  9. Trying to download Pocket Query to Garmin 32x from MacBook Air - it is saying GPS is full. This has only recently happened.
  10. Modern Garmin devices do everything your Magellan will do, and much, much more. You can see very detailed examples and walk throughs at GPSrChive.com You can also learn about the various methods to get geocaches loaded to your Garmin by visiting GPSrChive > How To... > Geocache
  11. I have a Garmin 650 and 750, and they plug into USB for file loads, as do most of the newer Garmins. Some support live Geocaching via a connected smartphone, but I don't use that feature. I load whole towns' caches as Pocket Queries, plus I have a "Go Find" List for caches that I don't want to miss. I load that in my App (and on my Garmin) so they stand out from the mass of loaded caches. I found a video on how to make a Pocket Query: https://youtu.be/O0DXycnqei4?si=a9dxnGoEgMCTLvF1 That's handy for creating a file of a lot of caches, rebuilt on a schedule and filtered just the way you like, and it automatically may include new caches and exclude archived ones. If you're picking and choosing just a few caches to hunt, you may place them into Lists. You can then download all the chosen caches as one file, and the cache info is fresh when you download it. Yes, the cache info is available in Lists and Pocket Queries. The included maps vary. Sometimes the seller includes regional maps. Mine came with TOPO, and I bought a Garmin Street Map SD card because it was easy to install and to move to another GPS, and because it supports street routing. But it doesn't update, and I now use Waze while driving, so I do routing from The App. If I'm offline, I can use my Garmin Nuvi instead for driving directions to a parking area.
  12. With the new Garmins - do they all download the information of a cache like the Magellan did ? Like the size of the cache or the hint if available? The one Garmin I did try E-trex SE said I had to have a smart phone and download an App on it then register the Garmin then link it up. I returned it. I wanted something simple. Hook the Garmin up to the computer. Download the caches and be on my merry way. Maybe there isn't such a thing anymore. As for making a pocket query - I have never done that yet. Is there a video on how to make one? I kinda looked into it but I just always downloaded all the caches straight from the individual cache. Maybe not as efficient but it did work for me. Also do the maps include Canada? I haven't had to download any maps yet either. The Magellan still works kinda if I input the cords but then I have no info on the cache itself.
  13. For sometime I have been using the Garmin 78s https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4432023.m570.l1313&_nkw=garmin+78s&_sacat=0 I also like the Garmin 62s........both these units can be found on line. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2332490.m570.l1313&_nkw=garmin+62s&_sacat=0
  14. On a planned outing I use a Garmin 78S and 62S or 64S. I used to be classified as a " phone hater " but the phones are great for an unplanned grab and log.
  15. Maybe look at the newer Garmin GPSMaps, or Oregon 650 or 750. Depends on if you may prefer buttons or touch screen. Then look around on ebay. You can get a nice device without breaking the bank. I would suggest that whatever you get, to then get the most recent software updates. And there are a lot of maps available for free.
  16. Since you are frequently in areas with no cell service, you will need to load all geocache data prior to each trip. This is not difficult to do once you create some PQs for the desired region, download them and copy the GPX files to the GPX folder on any modern Garmin GPSr. Now you just need to determine which model you want...
  17. Since I started Geo caching I had used the Magellan GC. It worked awesome. Then it wasn't supported by the Geo caching site anymore for downloading caches. I stopped downloading new caches and just used what I had on my gps for a few years. Now I am looking for a new gps that works for geocaching with the same features as the Magellan. Maps included and ease of downloading. Also a huge thing for me is not having to use a phone to link it up.I did buy the Garmin Extrex SE and loaded some caches before heading out on our vacation and downloaded the app on the phone that they said we needed. It did not work at all. Very disappointing. I need a unit that requires no phone connection because cell service is non existent in alot of the areas I go to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also do not want to pay an arm and a leg for the unit.
  18. I figured I should chime back in since I was so skeptical.... I got a 67i and recently finished a 4 day hiking trip. I look at it quite a lot. Track log recoding at most. inReach not turned on. Everything else stock. 15% battery loss from the trip. Probably 8 hours a day. Using this battery monitor, Connect IQ Store | Free Watch Faces and Apps | Garmin
  19. You should be able to adjust this in settings. https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/GUID-76DD39C5-047F-4599-892F-60C9207A6637/EN-US/GUID-89F043D2-983F-4428-88A5-47EF073F4654.html I wouldn't change the datum or spheroid. Alternatively, just leave the last digit as 0 - it's decimal places, after all. Setting to dd mm.mmm does tell your GPSr to round up or down for that last place, but when we're talking .0001 of a minute, the difference (depending on latitude) is perhaps 15 cm / 6 inches. With 3m / 10 ft EPE, you're not going to notice.
  20. A workaround that I've found for the 66st is to go into the Garmin/EDM folder and delete all the .bin files there when changing .gpx/.ggz files. My 66st was taking over 90 minutes to startup with new .gpx/.ggz files until I found that workaround. Now it's back down to a couple of minutes and that's with 9000+ caches in a .ggz file and several hundred waypoints in a .gpx file.
  21. On the top of the screen of my Oregon 450t is a grey banner. It's immediately there when I switch on the device. The info tekst I can add in the startup file is shown in this section so I think the display is working, but further on it stays grey. I already did a reset for the device but with no result. What can this be, and how can I solve it ? I can buy a replacing display on the internet, but I doubt if this will solve the issue. Regards, Marcel
  22. It is much more pleasant to navigate to stations using reliable maps on a GPS device (either phone or Garmin device).
  23. Luckily there are OSM maps already compiled for you. All you need to do is download and install on the device / SD card. You have a few options for mapping. The one I like best is OpenTopoMap at garmin.opentopomap.org. There you can get street maps and contours for any region of interest. The other option is garmin.bbbike.org which has more visual styles to choose from as well as the ability to make custom mapping areas.
  24. Hi all, i have bought a used Garmin Oregon 450 and have some trouble understanding how maps work on the device: I would love to have 3 Maps available - World Basemap - Europe high level map (cities, main roads) - Sweden/Norway Hiking map It would be great to use OSM maps as a bases but as I dont have any experience in compiling maps from OSM data i need to use prebuild maps. A few question: 1. How does map management on the Orgeon work? Is it possible to have different maps for different zoom level. E.g. when zoomed out I see the basemap, fruther in i see the high lvl euopre map and if i zoom in i see the detailed hiking map 2. I found couple of maps (https://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/de/nordeuropa.html; https://www.thkukuk.de/osm/). They are hiking maps and quite detailed, which I think makes them extemly slow/unsuable if zoomed out even a little 3. In the example of https://www.thkukuk.de/osm/ they provide a basemap, SRTM Layer map, hiking map. How would i combine those to see everything. 4. Do you know any good (free) World Basemaps and high-lvl (fast) Europe maps. Or ask differently: How would you get/Organize/transfer maps for my usecase? I'm unfortunately a bit lost. Thanks a lot
  25. Here's a simple way to do this: start the song, then start a timer. On the timer's elapsed event, show the zone or message. Oh, I'd love to see you make that Garmin GPSr sing with beeps. That would be quite funny.
