  1. I know this topic is recurring but I haven't seen any articles in 2023 and 2024, and in that topic they ended up not mentioning any model, so could someone recommend (or even sell) me, is the Garmin etrex touch 35 good?
  3. Thanks. My phone is not glued to my ear and I have no idea at all how much data it uses. I'd average, maybe, one call a day and one or two texts. The only time I use it for caching is when I do maintenance. This will likely be a trial run for my Adriatic cruise Nov/Dec when I'll have heaps more time. I have a couple of free days in Athens and Rome where I would normally load PQs into GSAK for download to my Garmin.
  4. Though I have no data to back this up... I'd think "spontaneous caching" might use 10 or 20 MB / day tops, maybe extra if you're loading spoiler pictures and you haven't loaded map tiles in advance. It's images (spoilers, map tiles, videos, ...) that really suck up bandwidth; simple text such as cache listings and logs is minor, a lower order of magnitude. TLDR: 1GB should be way more than enough (CLARIFYING: for the entire trip; you were asking about GB/day), and you'd even have leftover for miscellaneous stuff (checking email etc.) between WiFi points. (Can you even buy less than 1GB nowadays? Dunno.) PS, if I was in a tour group with only limited time for caching, I probably wouldn't even bother with a SIM. I'd just have all the caches and map tiles pre-loaded in advance (at home, or over hotel WiFi), then pretend my phone was a dumb old Garmin. All of South Korea (map tiles + caches) can easily fit into a caching app. If you're one of those people who watches videos while on the train/bus, ignore my advice; you'll need gigs. No idea how many, but people seem to buy "unlimited" because they have no idea either.
Weer terug.
  11. Since you mention the Lily, I assume you want to use an app with your watch. I use Locus Map for Garmin. Locus is the caching app I use so that made it an easy choice. The watch version is not a stand alone, but Locus is an amazing app. While the watch version needs to be connected to Locus with bluetooth you do not have to be on line to use either. Cacher is also for Garmin watches. I purchased it but have never really used it since it seemed like overkill. I just noticed that it now has an offline mode for certain watches that supports up to three caches. I want to try that out to see what it is like. I find myself using the watch for caching more than I thought I would. There are only a few situations where I might completely use the watch, but it is handy to glance at my wrist and know how close I am or make sure I am still on the right trail.
  12. My recent trip to Korea was 3+ weeks, and I went just barely over 1GB of data. However, I pre-loaded my phone (Locus Map on Android) with all caches and maps needed for offline mode, like loading up an old Garmin, so my data usage was just miscellaneous stuff like loading extra logs, spoiler photos, navigation with CityMapper, restaurant reviews, etc. Most quality caching apps let you pre-load everything you need, eliminating the need for a SIM. There may still be a want for a SIM, of course. So, I get one, even though I cache in airplane mode. There are a bazillion SIM options, and coverage is phenomenal; Korea is hyper-modern. I think this is the SIM I used, and it was fine: https://www.trazy.com/experience/detail/korea-sim-card-international-shipping-service (I don't usually buy a SIM in advance, but my plane landed at stupid:30 AM and I knew nothing would be open, and even though I didn't need that SIM to find my way into Seoul on the first train, I wanted it. Correction... Actually I did need it to CityMapper my way around between caches the first day while my bag waited for check-in time at a locker in the station.)
  13. I will be going to South Korea next month. Sorry if this may be slightly OT. I will be on an organised tour and intend to cache on the fly using my Motorola phone instead of my Garmin GPSr. I intend to buy a South Korea SIM (the Motorola is dual SIM) and would like an idea of how many data gigs I would need, approximately, per day.
  14. It's interesting that this still hasn't been fixed. The issue is actually fairly simple: the site used to make a note of a timestamp (of the most recently-uploaded draft) so any drafts older than that would be ignored, and no longer does that. The code to either record that timestamp, or to retrieve that timestamp so older drafts can be discarded, can't be that complicated. It's just a database transaction for a single value. The issue is also very simple to reproduce, as shown earlier in this topic. Since this issue affects a large number of Garmin-using members, it would be a quick-win to finally get this sorted out and make a bunch of members happy.
  15. After a recent issue with my Zumo, I wonder if it is an SD card error..IF your device has an SD card. I had 32gb card but it was not being seen. it was corrupt card issue. Worth a look if you have an SD card My issue was that the card was appearing on the computer when plugged din via USB..so it was usable ..buyt the garmin coudl not access it despite it being seen by the Mac whilst the card was in the garmin..
  16. There are a few apps for garmin devices out with which you can find nearby geocaches. What are the best ones? Do they support the Garmin Lily 2?
  17. I rarely use my phone for geocaching, preferring the Garmin, but on the rare occasions I have, I've also observed that problem, although it's not consistent and doesn't always do it. One that particularly comes to mind was when I was planning some virtual waypoints for a multi and realised when I got to the location that I'd forgotten to bring the Garmin, so I recorded my preliminary coordinates on my phone so I could at least make a start on the cache page. Two of the waypoints, about 14 metres apart, were recorded with the same coordinates on my phone, fortunately I noticed at the time and was able to correct it by walking a good distance away from each one and coming back. The same thing probably happened on a multi published by another local cacher, as two of her waypoints, from memory about 20 metres apart, had almost the same coordinates. There's probably some "clever" bit of code in either the app or the phone's GPS service that thinks it can save a bit of battery life by not taking readings when it thinks you're stationary.
  18. I use both, but probably 90% of the time with my Garmin Oregon 450. Gonna be a sad day if that ever croaks. I tried the Garmin 700 0r 750 and really disliked it. Many times, for no reason I could figure, it would just stop working. As for the phone (iPhone) I always use that to get directions to the next cache. My first Garmin was a Legend CX. Kind of wish I had kept it.
  19. I started geocaching back in 2006. Lots of fun with my old Magellan and printing out cache descriptions. From what I remember the GPS seemed a lot more accurate back then. It would get me within a few feet of the cache and depending on how small or how well it was hidden it would take some looking but eventually find it. I got away from it for probably the last 12 years or so and recently got back into it and figured the phone would be much better these days. My phone won't even update that close and usually is stuck in a spot until I'm 50 feet away then it will update. So narrowing down coords is impossible and pretty much rely on the map image and trying to figure out which tree it's marked closest to. Is there a way to get better GPS updating on the phone? Samsung Galaxy 23 ultra? So I figured I would try an actual GPS unit again and ordered a Garmin etrex 22x. It seems better and shows every foot updating but I still had FTF on caches that were supposed to be easy and the one I did find was showing me 15' away from the listed coordinates. Has GPS lost accuracy or is there something off in calibration or has it always been this way and I'm just misremembering how it was in 06-12? It's fun either way but just seemed different now.
  20. Deletion of BIn files from EDM folder did not solve the slow startup issue Deletion of .fit files from dfrive:\Garmin\Activities as suggested by helpdesk Garmin did not solve the issue I'm making some progress using GGZ (GSAK)
  21. This is AKERDoc. I live in Alaska and started caching in 2008. I started in the summer of 2008 in Saranac Lake while running using a Garmin GPS enabled watch. I am a retired ER Doc who lives in Eagle River, AK.
  22. Forgive me if this sounds like an obvious question, but have you checked to see if the memory on your Garmin is actually full?
  23. Trying to download Pocket Query to Garmin 32x from MacBook Air - it is saying GPS is full. This has only recently happened.
  24. Modern Garmin devices do everything your Magellan will do, and much, much more. You can see very detailed examples and walk throughs at GPSrChive.com You can also learn about the various methods to get geocaches loaded to your Garmin by visiting GPSrChive > How To... > Geocache
  25. I have a Garmin 650 and 750, and they plug into USB for file loads, as do most of the newer Garmins. Some support live Geocaching via a connected smartphone, but I don't use that feature. I load whole towns' caches as Pocket Queries, plus I have a "Go Find" List for caches that I don't want to miss. I load that in my App (and on my Garmin) so they stand out from the mass of loaded caches. I found a video on how to make a Pocket Query: https://youtu.be/O0DXycnqei4?si=a9dxnGoEgMCTLvF1 That's handy for creating a file of a lot of caches, rebuilt on a schedule and filtered just the way you like, and it automatically may include new caches and exclude archived ones. If you're picking and choosing just a few caches to hunt, you may place them into Lists. You can then download all the chosen caches as one file, and the cache info is fresh when you download it. Yes, the cache info is available in Lists and Pocket Queries. The included maps vary. Sometimes the seller includes regional maps. Mine came with TOPO, and I bought a Garmin Street Map SD card because it was easy to install and to move to another GPS, and because it supports street routing. But it doesn't update, and I now use Waze while driving, so I do routing from The App. If I'm offline, I can use my Garmin Nuvi instead for driving directions to a parking area.
