  1. I have a Bushnell Onix 200 Color that I would like to sell or Trade for a Maggellan or Garmin Etrex. I know these Bushnells got a bad wrap but once I studied the books, it worked OK for me. I found it at first to be a bit confusing but after I got used to it, the software worked ok for me. With todays technology and simplicity of newer GPSs, the old timer Handhelds are a bit cumbersome. I downloaded GPSBabel and found it easy to work with the software that came with the Bushnell. Having the GC site up and downloading the caches, then using GPSBabel to convert into the Busnell software, It downloadeds right into the unit. The accuracy I have to say I found very good once in the field. I had my iphone app up in one hand and the onix in the other (paint that picture in your head) and both were right on. One thing I noticed right out of the box is the Onix found satilites right from my couch in me house. That impressed me. Anyway, please do not consider buying or trading if you are not one for digging in and really figuring these out. At first I fumbled over the menus and software but stuck with it and had good luck with this. Why am I getting rid of this? I use mostly my iphone now and want to trade for a simple unit so I can teach my grandchild the hobby. This Onix is above her head in learning I do have to admit. It comes with the software, book, and USB cable interface. The unit is in great condition cosmetically. I can send pictures if you are interested. I would rather trade this than sell it. Thanks for reading and if you are interesated and have any questions, please ask. I would like a clean and friendly exchange.
  2. Is the Oregon 200 a gps that is worth 150 bucks used? There are so many choices with new gps it is difficult to figure out what one to buy. I like the etrex 20 but have also considered a dakota 10, magellan 110, or 310. I am price challenged so I want the biggest bang for my buck.
  3. Morning, yesterday i visited a graveyard. I noticed that only a few gravestones were older than ap. 200 years. 1300 graves -> only about 5 older than 200 years. It would make sense to waymark them because often the really old ones decompose within time, so pictures and names are away. I'm doing genealogical researches for my family, so having dates from old graves online would be great. Perhaps there is a category for them yet? Cheers lumbricus
  4. a friend gave me an old Nuvi 200. He also is going to give me a copy of North America City Navigator 2011 to put on it. This was put on a different unit of his, will it work on the Nuvi 200 I have? If so, how do I install it? This is my first auto gps. Thanks.
  5. I recently picked up an Oregon 200 and it's compass seems sluggish. I can't seem to find the calibrate feature on the unit. Does anyone know how to calibrate this unit, or is it not an option? Thanks
  6. The title and description pretty much cover it, and the cheaper the better.
  7. In Your Opinion - what would you consider to be the best handheld GPS for under $200. I am new to GC and my 7 y/o loves it... except when we aren't even close to the location while using my phones GPS. I just got a handheld GPS from Craig's List and now realize it is an older GPS unit. We are going to give it a try on Friday. But, I want to get a descent unit that will be fairly accurate. If I get hooked (like I think I will) to GC I will look to upgrade to an even better GPS by the end of year. With all that said... WHAT HANDHELD GPS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR UNDER $200? Thank you
  8. Hello all I have a lightly used Garmin Oregon 200. I bought it brand new a couple gets ago. It's probably been out in the wild on maybe 10 caching days. The screen has no scratches and there is no notable damage anywhere on the unit. Not sure what these are going for now I saw a return unit for $165. How about $150 shipped USPS Priority with insurance and DC. PayPal only and US shipping only unless you'll pay the extra for the shipping should be about $10 more to most countries.
  9. So we got our very first handheld GPS and must say. Never do I think I will go with Garmin again. We got a Garmin Oregon 200 and already cannot even get it set up past the SUBSCRIPTION. Went on geocaching.com and tried to send a cache to GPS by selecting Send to GPS. Well it asks for a download of a plugin, that is fine, but then when I try to run it it states that Windows Media Player v11 or higher must be installed before running the Plugin? Seriously? Okay I try that, and it takes me to a Windows validation screen asking me to buy a validation or validate Windows? (which Im pretty sure I did years ago, any way to check?) Such USELESS steps to take to get a GPS to connect to its computer. Hoping other company products are not like this one, but in the meantime, stuck with it, so does anyone know how to get around this stupid validation of WINDOWS? or not needing Windows media, or finding another source to get windows media other than the fail microsoft url.... Regards..
  10. I've been geocaching with a Motorola Droid for over a year with great success. I have real good cell coverage with Verizon and the phone has a pretty accurate GPS. I run PQs, fine tune with GSAK, and use offline files with the GeoHunter app which gives me about 6 hours battery life while caching. I've been very happy with this most of the time. So why do I want a a GPS? 1) I have a kayak and want to get caches via my kayak, but don't want to risk my smartphone. 2) I've been on some hikes which take longer than my Droid's 6 hour battery life. Even a day of park hopping using a car charger as I drive between short hikes can drain the battery faster than I can recharge it. 3) While my Droid has a good GPS and I can and have accurately hidden caches with it, it can't handle tree cover as well as a good GPSr like the Garmin 60 CSx could. 4) I've had no caching accidents with my smartphone yet, but with so much non-urban caching I know the risk is higher for something bad to happen. Since I have a smartphone, I wont be using this GPSr for anything except navigating to geocaches so many fancy perks are worthless to me. Three must-have criteria: 1) paperless caching 2) waterproof 3) accuracy Since I have a smartphone, I'd like to keep the cost of a GPS under $200. For awhile I had been thinking about getting a Magellan Explorist GC because it was one of the less expensive GPS units. But a little hands-on experience at the local Best Buy had be doubting the user-friendliness of it and the thumbstick seems like something bound to break. I borrowed a Garmin 60CSx recently. I found it user-friendly and amazingly accurate even when standing under tree cover - on the FT in the Ocala National Forest and under a group of cypress trees at a local park. A fellow cacher last month pointed out to me why they still have a 60CSx: we were standing inside a concrete building and he still had great signal. Unfortunately, the 60CSx just isn't going to cut it for paperless caching. Still, the experience was big points in Garmin's favor in my eyes. I've been intrigued by the new Garmin eTrex series; the eTrex 20 in particular. Does that sound like the best GPS for what I'm looking for? Are there other units I should be considering?
  11. I've been asked to find a decent GPSr for my cousin. Funding around $200. He favors Garmin units so far. I found some deals the new eTrex 20 and an Oregon 200. Which one would be the better purchase? He's relatively new to caching and that would be it's primary function. I've looked at the specs for both, so I know the "Factory" differences, but am wondering about "field" differences. I've read the other threads concerning the issues people are having with the eTrex. At least Garmin seems to want to improve things. Whereas the Oregon 200 is now discontinued and may not have any kind of support for much longer. Is the touchscreen really that big of a deal? I don't know personally, and don't plan on seeking one out for myself until current unit dies. Any help/opinions welcome. Thanks Steve
  12. So it seems like I'm incapable of operating this particular piece of technology. I have a .gpx file that I've tried to install using the garmin software, dragging it onto the memory card, and the waypoints show up, but they don't show up in the geocaching button. What am I doing wrong?!
  13. comes with usb cable ,garmin gps case ,2 windshield mounts , owners manual, have cached with this unit for 2 years with no problems reason for selling is i have upgraded to a paperless unit
  15. Help required please. I'm having difficulty entering co-ords for a bonus cache. The only way it seems possible is to drag to a point and save it as a waypoint. This is proving very frustrating as even with the maximum scale getting N and W settings accurate is beyond me. Isn't there a way just to put the co-ords straight in? Would be very grateful for help. Thankyou. Gareth23
  16. I have been geocaching for half an year now, and am interested in a dedicated GPS for my birthday. I am currently using an iPhone 3G , and would like to get something within by budget. The unit does have to be somewhat rugged and hopefully waterproof, but does not need to have a touchscreen. A colour screen does help but is not mandatory, and it has to be powered by AA batteries, as rechargeables don't work for my long hikes. Any suggestions? My friend is using the Magellan eXplorist 310, and it looks tempting.
  17. For about $200 (my current PayPal funds) and using eBay what would you choose? I would like a map feature and maybe something that has geocaching ability but it's not so important for me to download content for new caches. I can enter that info before my adventure. I want to get more into hiking so I want a GPS that can allow me to not get lost (waypoints) but at the same time explore more area and also use it for geocaching. Basically, an all-around gps for the outdoors. Thanks for any help!
  18. What are some of the best GPSr under $250?
  19. I have the above sat nav, can I use it to geocache? What do I need to enter - I've tried entering a number, ie, GC2WCTZ as a postcode but it doesn't find anything. What am I doing wrong?
  20. Hi I am so excited to be visiting Uk and my home town Bristol this summer. I live in Japan and have only been caching in Japan. I have an oregon 200 and I believe I will need to buy a microcard for the UK (at least South/west and Wales-plan to go to Mega event!!!) prices online range incredibly from 200 pounds for an all 3 regions, to 60 quid for each region.I also saw online somewhere offering an all region chip for under 30! Obviously I want to save money and wonder if these would actually work? Thanks The link for the 30 quid one is below, any idea if it is reputable or not? Thanks. http://gb.ioffer.com/i/garmin-topo-uk-great-britain-on-micro-sd-card-latest-v2-127348483 PS any Cachers in the Bristol( W-O-T,Henleaze) area want to met up, please let me know....Thanks
  21. I really need a paperless gps before we go on a trip next week and I still don't have enough money for a 450t or 550t. I saw the Oregon 200 refurbished for only 170 dollars and I recently bought a Venture HC for 100 dollars but I didn't realize it wasn't paperless. I know the 200 is an older unit but so is the HC. Is the 200 worth buying right now for the cheap price? Will I be happy with it for the next couple months while I am on the other end of the country? I really want to spend some time finding geocaches out where I am going and right now I don't have time to save up the money to get a really nice GPS. Thanks.
  22. I have been trying to download new caches to my oregon 200, and for the past couple weeks, it hasnt been working. I used to use the plug-in and click on "save to my GPS", but when that stopped working, I also tried saving the GPX file directly to my GPS, in the GPX folder. When I go through my computer and open the GPX folder, the GPX files for the new caches are saved in the GPX folder, but they don't show up on my GPS map??
  23. I have recently been given a Garmin Colorado 200 GPSr which still has a large number of geocache descriptions loaded in it. I am unable to find a way to delete these and the person who gave it ti me has no idea either. Can anybody help please.
  24. Hi there - sorry, very newbie to actual handheld GPSs. My daughter and I just stared geocaching last year and did it last year almost entirely with my iPhone. This works great where there is signal but, living in northern Canada, that's a pretty limited area. So, I found a used Triton 200 for sale and picked it up hoping it'd allow us to expand our range. It seems the location readings are consistently off. The N degrees seems to be fairly close but the W degrees is .075ish off pretty regularly. I'm getting these numbers compared to the iPhone geocache app which is bang-on when I'm looking for caches. I read a bunch of forums and didn't really find any thing other than a Magellan shift (which I assume means they are always wrong by a set degree and I must account for that manually). Thanks for any tips in advance. Rob
  25. We have been using a 100 foot tape and a 200 foot tape. These seem to cover most situations and we are happy with them. However, the 200 foot tape broke and our 100 foot is fading fast. Can you recommend new measuring tapes for replacements? We would prefer the 100 footer to be lightweight and not too bulky. Our 200 footer had a geared wind-up mechanism with a 3X rapid rewind speed and that was such a great feature that we want our new one to have it also. Our existing 200 footer is an Ace Hardware brand – it was perfect except that early on the fiberglass tape started to break where it connects to metal end piece so we would prefer to try another brand this time. Any suggestions or ideas or general conversation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
