  1. OK I found my real numbers. >= 365 days: 194 caches, total = 357 years >= 180 days: 454 caches, total = 537.6 years
  2. I am at something close to 200 lonely for 365+ days now, with a total (IIRC) of around 450 years; I will have to re-check tonight. I love finding lonely caches. My longest are 2 that were a little over 5 years lonely each; I have friends who have found 8+ years lonely caches, but I have not been so fortunate.
  3. I know challenge caches are not everyone's cup of tea but for those who enjoy them: any ideas for themes or ones you've particularly enjoyed? I did four yesterday, 100 day stretch gave me my 75th DT combo; same walk had stretch better than slump, higher number than most caches in a day. I had to pass on 365 caches found in a stretch regardless of length. Earlier I did one based on the. British sidetracked (railway station) series, 20 letters A-Z. I've also enjoyed a Christmas words in title, 365 days found and rainbow (colours in title - qualify not yet picked up). Oh and caches in X squares of a map and trads in order beginning Traditional Christmas (working hard on non trads beginning Alternative Christmas) were a lot of fun and planning too. Thinking of putting out my own and back to the theme idea over numbers as it encourages people to scroll through their finds and reminisce. Ideas so far first names A-Z 20/26, animals (including hidden ones - come on I live near Oxford Cowley Henley and Ewelme!), flora, food not included in previous two eg pie, dessert, lunch, curry; lastly English county names (US states might work too?) Any good ideas welcomed. I'm looking to be inclusive not just make ones where 5000+ cachers will stand a chance.
  4. I don't think that type of challenge (including an end date) would have been published even before these updates. When was it published? Oh I'm in full agreement - I personally love challenges that have me focus on a goal, even if I've already inadvertently accomplished that goal in the past. Then, it was accidental. It doesn't have the same value as if I were to do it now. However, having said that, there'd be nothing stopping me from doing it again anyway, even if the date restriction weren't there, since my view of the challenge (I want to do it intentionally) might be different than another's (I've already done it). For sure. But again, there's nothing stopping you from putting your personal parameter on the challenge and doing again in 2012 and on. Note that in your log =) I disagree. It doesn't reduce the self-competitive aspect (whatever that is, heh) because you can still set your own parameters on the challenge for your own goal. I took on the 365-day challenge. I know many have already cached for 365 and far more consecutive days... so to give the challenge a little more umph for myself, I made it 366 unique consecutive days and logging the challenge itself on Feb 29th, day 366, as find #1337. None of that would have been publishable in a challenge, let alone enforceable, but I chose to put those challenge parameters on myself. Doesn't reduce the value of the 365 completion for anyone else, and no one else's extreme completion and continuation of the challenge (1000+ consecutive days, anyone? Or whatever the current record is? ) is any less impressive -- but it makes the challenge and the goal personal. Nothing stops anyone from doing that. If found-after-date is no longer allowed in challenges, that doesn't mean cachers can't set their own found-after date. But if the concern is about the fact other cachers don't have that restriction, then it does become a competitive challenge, rather than a personal one. Remove the found-after date, and it promotes it less, officially, as a competitive challenge. I still love challenges that encourage me to focus, now, on a goal, rather than just logging it because I'm already done. But that is a personal goal, not a competitive one. Being among the first to complete a challenge - that's competitive.
  5. I don't remember why I started my largest streak, maybe it was a small challenge cache, but originally, I only wanted to do 100 days. But as that time was nearly up, I thought "that wasn't hard," and I was enjoying it more than I thought I would. So, I decided to go for 180 days instead of quitting. As I approached my 180-day goal, I thought that I needed to beat my longest slump which was and still is 265 days. I was really enjoying getting up earlier than normal, 5:30 a.m., so that I could get to work on time and not interfere with family time. I was really enjoying the dark quietness of my searches, before the noise of heavy traffic and joggers were about. As fall and winter approached I had to use a flashlight. Even though most of these finds were urban rather than forest mountain hikes, it was very serene and even spiritual. As I approached the goal of beating my slump, I thought "what the heck," I decided to go for a full 365 which of course needs to be 366 for some old challenges. But once that neared, I was enjoying myself so much, that I just kept going, although I was finding myself driving farther out of the way on the way to work. Although I did enjoy it so much, some days were tough. There were a handful of days (not many) that I couldn't find one before work, and had to find one on the way home. I did eventually quit at 420 days, a nice round number, 60 weeks exactly, and 14 (30-day) months. I decided intentionally to not find a cache the next day. I actually felt naughty. On most days, I still try to find a cache before work, but if I DNF, that's OK. I don't HAVE to find one anymore. But it is an experience, that I really enjoyed and am glad I did it.
  6. I'm reading this thread with interest, as I am currently on day 145, with a goal of a cache-a-day in 2018. We (hubby and I) started geocaching in March 2017, cached for the enjoyment we got out of fully sharing a hobby with our son and daughter in law (we'd been peripherally involved, but didn't have our own accounts or actually gone out on our own) and were not in it for the numbers or challenges or any of that. As our find count grew, we started exploring Earthcaches, Puzzles, Virtuals, Multi caches, and very recently Wherigo's. We found a cache on the last day of 2017 and the first day of 2018 for the souvenir, just because. And then we thought it would be fun to try and find a cache every day in 2018. We set a goal, and most days we go together; there are days when we have to go individually and find a cache. There are lots of caches around us, with new ones being published daily. We haven't really had a problem with not having any close enough to find. There's a challenge cache for filling the 365 day grid; we should get that done by Dec. 30 this year. 366 will have to wait till 2020. And there's a 400 day challenge that we might just go for once we get to 12/31 - as that will be 367 consecutive days, so what's another 33 days? But we may decide to end it on December 31. We'll see how we feel then. Right now, it's still fun, and challenging. And if life happens and we don't make our goal, we'll keep on caching and say, oh well. In the meantime, it's nice to wake and ask where we are going to go find a cache today?
  7. My cache streak of a whopping 25 days is purely un-intentional. My decision to stop a streak started before it began. I saw a streak challenge cache and said 'no way'. No fun in it. (And expensive, and a waste of time in transit.) So, I have never attempted a streak. Also, while there are lots of caches around me, most are completely uninteresting. I prefer a different set of challenges, challenges like filling my 365/366 day calendar. If that means getting one a day for a while, I might do it then. But not just to reach some arbitrary number.
  8. My longest streak is 48 days, and that was long ago, in 2010. I was then (and still am now) a very regular cacher, going on tour essentially every(!) weekend, and finding a cache during the week (before or after work) typically on at least 2 days. But I quickly realized that finding a cache on each and every day is not for me. Family time, long working days, terrible weather, low number of unfound caches in my home zone ... after about 40 days I more or less had enough. I couldn't persuade myself to simply quit the streak here and now, but I defined a very near-term target where I would definitely end it. I chose to complete the current month (giving me my first, and still only, calendar month with a find on each day). That was it, any I never tried to do a streak ever since. Not even during "Souvenir August" (when I found it both amusing and slightly irritating to see to what lengths other cachers may go if they just have to get every souvenir ). Bottom line: When you realize, that it's really no fun anymore, set a short-term cut-off date (next "round" number, or whatever), enjoy the last few days of the streak ... and look forward to the future, where geocaching is leisure-time hobby and not an obligation for 365 days a year .
  9. New challenge caches can require a streak up to 365 days: https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=127&pgid=206 But when the guidelines for challenge caches were changed, older challenge caches that required longer streaks were grandfathered. I stopped my streak at 366 days because I had seen 366 day challenge caches, but the next "level" that I had seen was a fairly significant jump above that.
  10. I've considered going for it, but like many others have said there are a whole host of issues if you are to attempt it. The first being that you have to geocache every day. Even when it's snowing, or raining, or you have plans, or you just plain don't want to. Also, you would probably have to pace yourself. 1 geocache a day, if you intend on spending the last amount of gas money as possible during the challenge, and a lot of planning. Then there's also the fact that, if you have a demanding job, you may not actually, physically be able to go every day. There are days that I have to work 16-20 hours straight. I would feel pretty frustrated if I broke a 100 or 200 day streak due to forces outside my control. Basically, there are a lot of things that can go wrong, and people who have completed the challenge don't seem to enjoy geocaching the same was as they did before. 100 geocaches in a day, however, is a challenge that I will be trying come this summer. Unlike the 365 day streak, the worst I would lose is a day of summer.

  12. 31 Days ... was specifically for August 2013. If you did any caching in that month, you will have a profile 'souvenir' for that specific date, indicating the date in August of 2013 when that specific badge/souvenir was earned. The coin was designed to be coordinated with THAT specific campaign on GS, but can certainly be purchased by anyone and displayed accordingly. I guess there would be 'purists' that would say you only earned it if you completed all 31 days in August 2013 ONLY. The 365/366 coins are for completing your grid, regardless of the year actually completed. It does NOT have to be for consecutive days of caching. There are even threads and comments that I won't look up that mentioned several times that 2012 was your last chance for 4 years to get the day needed for the 366 challenges and coin qualifying. Again, there is no 'monitor' for the 365 or 366 coins except yourself and your stats/souvenirs page. Just like August this year, 2014, there was the 'Achiever' challenge. Anyone could buy the tags and/or achiever coin, regardless of whether they actually finished the challenge or not.

  14. I would be interested to know what your ratio of NA/NM on visited caches versus the ones you arm chair log. I think your 'local reviewer' may be getting too many requests and just feels that you should visit the caches. This use of putting NA/NM on not visited could be seen as 'caching police' tactic, the more you do the less interested the 'local reviewer' may be. But targeting non-active CO's seems to me as nothing better to do, lots of people feel that helping out a CO is correct and helpful. I would replace the wet log rather than put a NA on it, it's my personal opinion that as a community we should support COs in maintaining caches, active or not. Especially if they cannot be replaced with a new cache publication due to new restrictions in place. I currently own 365 caches, so I'm happy when someone replaces a wet log for me.

    Termin Cito Woche

    Ganz deutliches und grosses NEIN! Ach nein?

The average number of active caches during the last 365 days is 5429, which implies that the average number of finds per cache for the last year was 17.6 Since the beginning, 6952 cachers have logged at least one cache in South Africa. 1925 Cachers (28% of the total, more than 5 new cachers per day) have logged their first cache during the last 365 days. 20. arisoft, I can see you could look at the logic of the wording as confusing. If 1-find per date of a year is allowed, then technically every day is "one day" a year to work on the challenge (for each date); in the same way, if you limit it to holiday dates, that's still "one day" a year to work on the challenge (for each date). But I think in this case it can be seen that there are many fewer dates in the year to work on the challenge. If you have restricted to 12 dates, then that's only 12 times in a year a person can work on it, as opposed to 365+. So in that spirit - "a cacher only has one day each year to work on each date’s requirement" - your challenge would be declined. There's a lot more waiting for the next date to work on the challenge. The only reason I can see them limiting the dates to 1 per day is for those instances where say someone waited a year to work on the next date they need and say they need 4 caches. But they were only able to find 3. Now they have to wait another year. Limiting to one greatly reduces the chance that more than a year will be needed to complete the challenge. I guess I can understand that. But man that must have been a small fraction of appeals overall... I'm personally not too upset about limiting the time-required aspect of challenge caches though. There's a 2000-finds-per-year-for-3-years challenge in my region. Nope, not a chance. I had 2k in one year, a couple years back, didn't hit 2k the next year, and I'm not going to dedicated my next 3 years to year long high-count geocaching just for this challenge. 12 months of 150/month was active enough for me. If others can hit that, great for them; but high count priority has gone down a lot for me recently.
  21. Counting logs per time for determining whether a a cache is lonely maybe works in an ideal world, not everywhere. There are geocaches that have 24 finds in 12 years, then the final coordinates end on a list and all of a sudden groups start to log the cache, so another 24 finds within 3 weeks. Maybe they were there, maybe one of them was there. So this cache is only half as lonely as before. The lonely-factor no more tells the history of the geocache. The same is true also for D and T, Logs don't tell the truth about D and T any more as soon as hordes start logging caches where everything from riddle to hike was skipped and only finals are visited, sometimes by only one of them. I found a cache where the last entry in logbook was like 450 days before. Someone logged online 84 days ago without evidence in logbook. Does that make him qualifying for a 365 days span between finds? Sometimes people tear pages out of logbooks, sometimes people log online whenever they want, even before they put their signature on the paper or even without visitng the geocache. For a challenge there would be geocachers that make sure no one else can find the cache for the necessary timespan or after them. FTF is a sidegame that from time to time shows the less favorable traits of some of the involved geocachers, no need to widen their sphere of action to other fields. I think challenges should not further encourage all sorts of competitive and unfavorable behaviour. Geocachers that like to find geocaches that weren't found for long time do it also without challenges. And without forcing the owner to have a look at their remote cache when it goes unfund for longer before they attempt to find the cache. And without posting NA if the owner doesn't jump immediately.
  22. I do not understand how it is different to require every day of a year or some days, weeks, months etc. of a year. It is illogical. The requirement was some (holy)days. Actually 12 days. Not 366 or 365 days. I thought that only streaks are allowed but it seems that it is not true also. What is the difference if a challenge requires a find only at 1st January compared to days between 1st January to 31rd December? I think that it is not a miss by anyone. It is just vague guideline which can be interpreted so many ways depending on current situation. That is why I wish a better explanation, not because my challenge was rejected but because there may be a real problem.

  24. Not only a lack of respect, but dishonesty towards others. Not as big a deal with geocaching but it does make me wonder how far their dishonesty goes in their daily life, Of course this only pertains when a person sets out to deliberately cheat. I've seen many times, people doing questionable things that they believe are perfectly fine. For instance, i know one person that claimed they completed 365 consecutive finds. The thing is, they did not go out and find a cache every day. What worked for them was to find more than one cache in a day, not date or log all of them, and save those non dated caches for days when they couldn't or didn't feel like going out. It would never occur to me this would be an acceptable practice but in their mind, it was perfectly fine.
