Hello! This might not be the correct forum but maybe another GC user had the same problem: I drive a new BMW 3er. This car has the built-in feature for Screen Mirroring. Sometimes I want to display the GC Android App on the car's screen and this works fine. But as soon as I start driving, the screen switches off with the note: "No motion pictues allowed while driving" (or something like that). From a safety perspective is this (in my mind) not different than a ordinary navigation system, so that I don't see a risk for that. Had anybody of you also the idea to display the Geocaching App in his car and has a solution for that? Regards, Michael

Hi, seit gestern habe ich auf GC.com ein Problem mit einem ziemlich hartnäckigen und nervigen Werbepopup von BMW. Ich bin PM und würde daher erwarten, sowas gar nicht erst zu bekommen. Aber jedes Mal, wenn auf der Seite diese dusselige BMW-Werbung kommt, dann ploppt mir auch ein neuer Tab vor der ganzen GC-Seite auf. Hat das noch wer von Euch? Howzit BMW GS geocachers. This years BMW eco challenge is happening from 18 to 21 October in Clocolan. Are there any GS riders who would like to join me on the trip. Do a few caches on the way down, a few during the event and a few back to JHB? Are there any other GS riders going from the other provinces?

Has anyone ever seen a BMW roundel Geocoin. I own a Bimmer and would like to turn it into a discoverable coin by posting the registration number onto my window or bumper (just like a TB sticker) but not at the cost of designing a coin and selling off the hundreds of extras. I tried to search online but got nowhere. Just as searching within the forums. Because BMW is a short word the forums just kick back an error, not a result. If you know where I might be able to get one that has not been activated, I would be very happy. Many thanks in advance. BigBadger

i would like to connect my emap to my motorcycle. its a BMW R1150RT, the BMW's have a 12 volt power socket but its not the same as the ones you would find in a car its slightly smaller. (John Deere also uses these smaller plugs) my problem is does anyone know of a power cable made for these smaller plugs or a convert cable . or something.. im no electronics guy so i dont think i could make this myself. i can buy the special connector but i wouldnt know how to setup the electronics to give my emap the volts it needs, ive seen schematics but it confuses the hell outa me. anyone can help me out??

I've been out again today after 5 days (March 26 th before that). We try to ride our bikes on 25-40Km tours along quiet roads, nature reserves and along waterways. Today we started early (@10:30) as most people tend to go out after lunch. We planned a route along several caches that were not found (or better, not logged online) for 3 days or longer. Just a few were found 2 days ago and one was found yesterday evening (but we didn't know that when we left home). Normal practice was getting to the cache, check the logs on the GPS, take cache, log, place back, clean hands. On the ones found 2 days or less we did the same but I put on latex gloves to take the cache, log and place back. On the way up it was very quiet cycling along the water and when we reached the farthest point (a little after noon) we cycled back along almost empty paths and streets as we knew most people tend to follow the cycling paths along the water. In all we didn't see a lot of people during our 36Km ride. I'm sure going the a shop is a higher risk than going outside and find some caches. BTW, as for "non-essential driving", a guy in Belgium has been caught (and fined) 5 times driving to friends but is now probably regretting it, his BMW is sitting in a police compound until further notice...

Our "Daily Cases" chart for Germany looks almost like the US one. . . If you read hzoi's article you know what's going on here. In the meantime, many cities are completely shut down, VW is closed Mercedes is closed, BMW is closed, playgrounds are closed, schools are closed, universities are closed, in Mannheim (population 310.000) any group of people is limited to max 10, soccer league ended early, Police Officers controlling parks and public places and many, many more actions. All this is required to break this exponential growth, it's about winning time. Everyone can help to achieve this goal.

Wenn Du nur mit Knöpfen zurechtkommst, kannst Du Dir das beste Touchteil der Welt kaufen und Du bist unglücklich. Oder umgekehrt. Da sollte man einfach mal am Gerät (Händler, Kumpel, Event....) austesten, was einem liegt. Nächstes Thema ist die Frage des papierlosen Cachens - m.Ws. gibts da Geräte, bei denen man z.B. die Spoilerbilder nur mit ein paar Tricks speichern kann - dazu müssen sich aber andere äußern - ich bin bekennender Ausdrucker Ansonsten werden wohl wieder die "wer billig kauft, kauft zweimal" - Sprüche auftauchen. Allerdings sind die Geräte mittlerweile so weit wie die Autos - man kann mit jedem alles machen - ob mit Dacia oder BMW. Daß man sich im Dacia sich vielleicht keine E-mails vorlesen lassen kann und der BMW nichtmal nen Regenschirm in der Beifahrertür hat, ist da wohl vernachlässigbar und in 99,9 % der Anwendungen eher verschmerzbar. Solange Du Dir kein Gerät ohne Kartendarstellung, mit zu kleinem Speicher oder einem Bildschirm, der für Deine Augen zu klein ist, kaufst, wirst Du da nix falsch machen (können). Gruß Zappo

I think we're in agreement. My point was that, in this particular example, cost difference isn't a factor in why Gamins are so prevalent whereas in the Hyundai/BMW example it is (I drive a Hyundai. Believe me, if BMW's cost the same as Hyundais I'd have a BMW). Despite my adoration for Garmins, and the culture of mapmaking surrounding their handhelds, I always suggest to anyone that they visit a store and spend at least 15 minutes with each unit, enough time to get a real feel for the menu systems and interface. After all, despite all the extraneous features, the user interface and menu feel are among the most important in my opinion.

Understood. My apologies. My dial is officially notched back. True. But in the case of this thread, that's not what's happening. Rather, many of the forum regulars are applying negative connotations to an entire group, based on the actions of a few members. Is that not the textbook definition of bigotry? Many, many years ago, whilst serving in the Army in Korea, I got my backside handed to me by a Marine. If I were to apply negative connotations to the entire Marine Corp based upon the actions of this individual, would that not be bigotry? A few months ago, whilst driving around in my patrol car, I had a lady driving a BMW cut me off in traffic, forcing me to slam on my brakes or rear end her. I probably shouldn't have, but I honked my horn. She made a rude gesture involving a single digit on her left hand. If I were to apply some negative connotations to all BMW drivers, would that not be bigotry? In perusing Faceybook, I've seen members of numerous caching groups sharing TB and geocoin tracking numbers. To date, I have only seen me group take decisive action against the number sharers. If I were to label all those other geocaching organizations with negative connotations, judging the whole for the actions of a few, wouldn't that be bigotry? I'm honestly trying to understand. I'm not trying to argue. Seriously. Isn't that what bigotry is? I'll not use that term again, if another descriptor is more appropriate.

Latest update: Microfest 2010 – The Kosmos Run Date: Saturday, 27 March 2010 Where: GC2381D - Clearwater Flyfishing Estate, south east of Pretoria – Severn Place cul-de-sac. S 25° 51.095 E 028° 15.988 As it is a security controlled area, I will send access details to confirmed teams. All drivers - i.e. vehicles and motorbikes - need to show their driver's license (as we all should carry on us anyway) or ID books in order to gain access. We will be phoned by security and check your team name and only allow those that confirmed (or team names we know) What: BIG HUNT in the morning, braai in the afternoon. Hunt for new caches in the area stretching from Midrand through Olifantsfontein, north of Bapsfontein, not quite as far as Rayton, but that general area and direction. • The idea with this event - keeping in mind according to Groundspeak rules the braai and social gathering is THE Event, the BIG HUNT hunt is separate and needs to be arranged not on the web listing but via the forum (here) and e-mail etc - is to do 4 things apart from the social: a. Have fun chasing lots of caches on one day. b. Help those who would like to boost their numbers a bit - come on, admit it, although we all like the hunt and getting to nice places (which will also be important for the Microfest), the majority like the stats part as well. c. By getting people to donate a cache, it shares the effort and financial burden of creating non-micro caches. d. Inject some life into the sport and the area. Schedule: 07:00 – 10:00 : Registration of teams for the BIG HUNT. 1. Entry for the BIG HUNT is 1 x prepared cache per TEAM – bigger than micro, preferably a REGULAR – OR a R50 donation that will be used towards cache costs. 2. The cache will be handed in, NOT TO BE PLANTED BY TEAM. Organisers will use caches submitted to either replace/upgrade some event caches or plant as a new one – credit will be given to contributing teams in listings. 3. No donation or entry requirements for the braai in the afternoon! 07:00 – 10:00 : Once teams have registered, they will be handed a paper list of all the caches available, their waypoints, hints and ratings (approximately 85 new caches), including a mark sheet that they will have to return and a rudimentary map to help with their route planning and perspective. 1. We will use Mapsource to load the waypoints onto compatible GPS units (mainly Garmin) – the naming format will be, i.e. ‘MF73 Zuma’ 2. We will keep it simple and no Pocket Queries or GPX files are promised at this moment – however our resident genius GreenJaM will play with the formats and might conjure up some paperless option. (BTW, GreenJaM has not been involved with the cache planting and will only receive the basic information beforehand in order to assist. Teams will then be set off to find a random cache allocated to them within the hour, SMS’ing the keyword found in the cache. Caches are allocated points according to difficulty of cache find, terrain and distance from ‘home’ – cachers therefore need to decide which route will give them the best total. A rating for vehicles will also be given in order to help make a decision on whether to chance it with their cache mobile for the day 5. NB: Once a cache is found, the keyword in the cache must be recorded on the mark sheet and the mark sheet handed in for scoring once they return to base any time before 14:00. 6. Teams can decide on their time of caching and return at any time if they get tired and gatvol! No starting before 07:00 and return no later than 14:00 – BUT, do not speed and put yourself and others at risk!! It is only a game after all, not worth it to risk your life – also asses any security situation around a cache and walk/run away if you are not comfortable. Please! The intention is to publish 99% of all caches available on the day, as soon as possible after the event. Thank you to Andy (Fish Eagle – reviewer for Africa) for his support of the event, the preparation and final publishing planned. After 14:00 : All teams returned. Settling down and starting the fires for the braai – at your own leisurely time, please don’t rush home. • The main event in the afternoon is a "dop and chop" braai where we will celebrate the humble (or is that humbling?) micro, sharing our stories and coins as usual. This is of course for everyone and will count as event attendance (a smiley) just by pitching up. • We will provide limited (but hopefully sufficient) braai facilities, bread rolls, coffee and tea. If it's your first BMW then I can recommend joining the BWM CCA, which includes a subscription to Roundel, probably the best available BMW magazine. It also should include your local club's magazine. BTW -- ever wonder why a motorcycle rider is called a 'biker,' but a bicycle rider is called a 'cyclist?' Motorcycle riders are called motorcyclists. Bikers are too busy hanging out in bars to actually ride much. I sometimes ride my Kawasaki ZRX1200 or my BMW R1150RT to the trailhead (if it's off a paved road), but neither bike is well suited for dirt roads. GW so in realy you are just a Cyclist. i mean a BIKER wouldn't be seen on you're scooter right? BMW HAHAHA get a real bike. You bought tires for your BMW, and the traded it in for a JEEP. BMW tires won't fit on a JEEP.

Thanks. Until now I had thought that Porsche and VW were part of the same overall group since VW was created to market the car Porsche designed and built to Hitler's specification. FWIW I worked for BMW when they bought the rights to the Rolls Royce name with respect to motor vehicles and remember having a chuckle when we found out that VW had bought the IP. So although VW could make proper Rolls Royce cars they couldn't call them that and BMW could call anything they made a Rolls Royce just as long as it wasn't a proper roller! That said, something seemed wrong about Porsche owning exactly 50% of VW. So (after getting the ding) I checked with Volkswagen themselves. Porsche have just over 50% of the voting rights, but that's not the same as ownership. Porsche Automobil Holding SE own 32.2% with Porsche Holding GmbH, Saltzburg owning 1.5%. Whichever way you look at it, that is way short of the 50% Wikipedia etc. suggests and just shows that you can't always trust Wikipedia! Anyway, next question: What was the name of the first dalmatian recorded as having walked on Chinese soil?

The odd comparison never made between the UK and US is the $ per mile. A few years ago, the average American was paying $2 / gallon to fill up his 14mpg truck. 1 mile = 14c / mile. Meanwhile, here in the UK we were paying 90p/litre to fill up our 30mpg(uk) hatchbacks. 1 mile = 13p / mile (20.8c) Now Americans are paying $3.80 which is 27c /mile and we are paying £1.30 which is 20p or 32 cents. There is a point at which the Americans will be paying more per mile than Brits, and we're approaching that point quickly. The biggest change though is the percentage rise, gas prices in the US have doubled nearly, but in the UK they've gone up by 30%, because the tax rate is mostly static. We may be paying a lot, but at least the money is going towards public healthcare etc. The money that Americans pay is going to the oil producers in the middle east. The ideal solution is for Americans to drive European style cars. It would be better for the environment, for the US economy (buying less oil) and for world stability. What most Americans don't realise is that in the UK, nearly all large cars are diesel powered. Mine is a BMW 5 Series diesel. They're nothing like how they were 20 years ago, and get similar MPG to hybrids. Take a look at a BMW 320d Ed - 0-60mph in 7.8s, yet it does 55 US mpg. Now work out your cents per mile

I don't road route very often, either, but my casual observation is that I basically never bothered with my PN-40, but it's sufficient quick on my PN-60 that I do sometimes use it. (It actually does a better job than the nav system on my lovely driver's BMW, but that's not saying much.) One common example is that I'll road route while walking to the next cache to better understand which roads go through where. I know not to bother looking at my PN-60 while I wait for the route, but on the other hand, the route is normally calculated by the time I get to the first turn, although take into account that in that case, we're talking about routes of a mile or two with only a couple dozen roads in the area. On the other hand, I've run into a bad quirk on the PN-60 that I don't remember on the PN-40: if you tell it to road route, and then you get it into a situation where it thinks you're going the wrong way -- for example, if you decide not to go there after all -- it goes into a mode where it continuously recalculates and it becomes very hard to stop it. (Yes, there's a "stop calculating" button, but it doesn't break the cycle.) More than once, I've had to just power it down to get control again. Both the Delorme PN-40 and the PN-60 are capable of storing at least 32GB of the bundled (free)Topo/Road maps of North America. This amount of data can include almost the entire USA. However if more than 23GB are installed, even local road routing to points only a few miles away may fail as noted above. So for local geocaching it is better to limit total map storage somewhat if using the PN-40/60 for road routing. I have personally stopped in New Mexico, but not near Philmont, on cross country trips to delete a few unneeded states gigabytes of data to make road routing work reliably.

Here's a very useful page to go to when you're looking for official geocoins: http://www.geocaching.com/track/geocoinslistall.aspx It takes a looooooong time to load. You can then read, or search, through the list for items of interest. I can't find anything with "BMW", "Beemer", or "Bimmer" in it, and there's only one car-related coin that I could find ("Caching in Muscle Cars - Mustang Fastback Geocoin"), but I was searching, not reading. I imagine that the objection to using the BMW Rondel is that the person doing it would have to get permission to use the logo; I don't know whether that's been attempted before. But I am a fairly new geocoin addict; hopefully some of the more experienced types will be along to help soon. : )
