I own a Mini. I had heard about Mini's long before the new BMW ones. They used to race them on the ice tracks during Minnesota winters. The center of gravity is so low they do not roll over... ever. Your big high center of gravity, "safe" SUVs can be rolled very very easily. Only if you try to drive it like a little car. I've taken SUVs for a ride and they don't tip over nearly as easily as all the urban myths purport. Even the Suzuki that Consumer's Guide purported to be easily rolled a few years back was forced into the roll by wreckless driving that no sane person would do. What I do know is an SUV can turn a little BMW into a VW.

Here's another odd twist on this incident. Snake & Rooster roughed me up one time for not going into that canyon for a find. Maybe they hired th' rock-throwin' perp' to ambush me but wound up ambushing y'all. So here's the part I have trouble with, well, the two parts - A. Claustrophobic Canyon GC11B4K - 1.5 difficulty/ 4 terrain As dangerous a location as you will find in California. All of the hazards mother nature has to offer, plus some surly urban campers at the entrance. SuperDave and I assisted Goblin Girl in her quest for this cache, and on the way out someone started hurling large rocks at us! SuperDave politely asked that they cease and desist, well maybe not so politely, and he was quite insistent. More rocks came flying out of the jungle, some landing on the street behind us. Fortunately one of SDPD's finest happened to be riding by on his BMW and Dave flagged him down. Together the professionals entered the canyon and confronted the perp! After a stern talking-to the ne'er-do-well promised to behave and the officer promised to check on the 'campsite' tomorrow. Everyday is an adventure! Rock on SuperDave!

Wow cool thread. I ride and cache. Right now I'm on a Honda Shadow 1100. I'm hoping to upgrade to a BMW 1200 GS Adventure soon so I can get more off road action in like "SSSSS" is doing with his. Looks like your having a ball on your GS "Ss" Caching on the bike saves gas and is more fun!

Allow me to add to Ratsneve's post. But first, let me make the observation that what I get the sense of here is some My Chevy is better than your Ford, case closed! attitude. Well, that can be excused because, as Ratsneve mentions, the DeLorme PN-40's capabilities have only been hinted at up until now. I have been fortunate to have been selected as a Beta tester and have been testing it for almost two months under a strict non-disclosure agreement. This NDA was loosened somewhat today and I am now able speak specifically to some of its capabilities from hands-on experience. Since I disdain the "my BMW is better than your MB" attitude, I'll restrict my comments to suggesting a hands-on comparison of the PN-40 with the 60csx and the Colorado/Oregon when the PN-40 becomes available at retail. You can then make your own judgement as to which suits you best. In a positive sense I will say that it is truly paperless with regard to geocaching with the caveat of having a Premium Membership so that the GPX files can be accessed. It's accuracy is spot on, so if the cache owner/hider has an equivalent, your are within a few feet. I don't feel that is somewhat smaller screen than the Colorado is a detriment to geocaching and any that I've failed to find have been a result of my lack of insight. I'm thinking that the total bundle including DeLorme's Topo maps of the entire USA is $430. There are a couple of other threads nearby with more information including one about "GPS Map Challenge.." started by Ratsneve (which has many side-by-side screenshots) that you might benefit by reviewing them.

Never been arrested. Hassled by some cops in California because I and the folks I was with weren't dressed up to standards and were skulking around public places (albeit legally) after dark. It didn't help that we were driving an old Mustang rather than a new Lexus, BMW, or Porsche as the locals mostly did. We left after being questioned once and passed slowly 2 or 3 times. Wasn't worth the hassle to stay. Questioned by a local officer once behind a grocery store while caching with 2 others. After a quick explanation and a license check of the driver we were on our way. I have a cache that's in an old mailbox in my yard, and I was talking to an out-of-town cacher who was visiting it when a local officer stopped on the road and asked what the mailbox was for. I invited him to come check it out. As soon as I mentioned Geocaching he laughed and said "Oh yeah, I know about that. I catch Geocachers all the time!" Glad to know my local police are aware of our hobby. Also glad I don't have any REAL arrests to post about here.

Completely new to caching, completely new to GPS unit other than the one in my bmw. Accuracy is important to me, i'd like to know i'm within 2-3 feet of it if that's possible I'd prefer a one stop shop, but will purchase maps if need be for the 'perfect' unit. It'd be cool if it could go car to trail so we could use it in the vehicle without nav when not geocaching definately want the easiest way to download all these caches, not sure if there is a way to say i'm traveling between east coast to west coast, give me all caches within 1 mile of my highway journey or not. What would you recommend and why?

Ok...i'm new to geocaching. I'd love to of course have the latest and greatest but perhaps can't stomach the price. so...maybe someone can help me. best case - works with my car, and motorcycle like my bmw's in-car navigation, yet portable so i can go find caches. hopefully has all the maps i'll need for the US. and of course hopefully a very quick response updating my location when i'm looking for a cache. next best - ok maybe the vehicle / geocahcing thing is too expensive, how about just a unit for caching that is very accurate and will not make me wait 5 minutes and keep changing my distance / direction to the cache? ok maybe we're at the cheap but great category now...so what will get me out there and isn't alot of work trying to capture the caches in memory i need to go hunt down? oh...and is there a way to keep these finds marked or seperated as found vs not found vs to do list?

The photo is incorrect. That prototype was scrapped months ago. The production model will be a Sportster, not a BMW, and will have a smaller, inflatable globe.

Why not? I have a BMW (John Deere) outlet on my Guzzi for electric gear and such, and if I need to run something with an SAE lighter plug I have an adapter. Same for the BMW, and when I had a Concours I had an SAE lighter outlet on the dash. Most people who tour add lighter outlets so they can use a compressor, GPS, radar detector or whatever. Because - my bike is a KTM dirt bike and the sockets eventually would come loose.....thus, I choose to hard wire directly to the battery. So, only a blown fuse or broken wire would shut down the gpsr. Rider

With Firmware 2.51 it is now possible to avoid highways, in case that the route is not longer than about 70 miles. On european streets this will result in avoiding highways (Bundesstrassen) and also motorways (Autobahnen) at the same time. Bundesstrassen: - Speed Limit: about 62 miles/hour - normally single-lane, sometimes 2 lanes per direction Autobahnen: - Speed Limit: normally no speed limit at germany, but about 75 miles/hour in most european countries - minimum 2 lanes, maximum 4 lanes for each direction In areas with a lot of highways and motorways, "avoid highways" will result in chaotic routes on the Colorado. This means that a tour to a city that is about 10 miles away will result in a route that is about 80 miles long, because the Colorado avoids all highways and motorways. When the destination city is more than about 70 miles away, the Colorado uses the motorways anyway. With the last firmware update of the Zumo and BMW Navigator III plus, it is now possible to really avoid only motorways (highways will not be avoided at the same time -> correct). Therefore, I was confident that the new Colorado would have this new routing engine with the next firmware update also. Hopefully, Garmin will make the avoid highways/avoid motorways working like it already works for the Zumo (avoiding motorways and highways separately). The current option "avoid highways" is not useable on (at least) europeen streets. I would appreciate, if this point could be added to the FAQ and Issues List. Thanks Stefan

Anders, you are right. It is the Zumo and the very close unit BMW Navigator III+ that has got the possibility to avoid Autobahnen and Bundesstrassen separately. It was a big issue in Europe, especially germany, because the Zumo is made for motobike-usage (see the thread here. It is german, but the amount of postings -441- says it all). Therefore, this unit must have the possibility to avoid Autobahnen. On the other hand side, there is really no need to avoid Bundesstrassen at the same time. These are totally different types of roads here. Now Garmin knows how to handle Autobahnen and Bundesstrassen and I hope that they implement the avoid Autobahnen feature as soon as possible. Stefan
