Hi all, I was hoping that you may be able to help me with deciding which unit I should purchase for endurance motorcycle riding. I appreciate that this may be the wrong forum for this question, but having read through the post here I have found there to be many very intelligent and informed mebers here whom appear to know what they are on about (a rare thing sometimes on forums ). Besides, you have introduced me to Geocaching and it sounds like a lot of fun. I want to place the unit on a BMW 650GS Dakar and the majority of the riding done on it will be for commuting to and from work, but on the weekends I want to be able to go camping and enuro riding. It is not an easy choice as to which unit to get. I believe I will buy a Garmin GPS (based on the very positive user feedback I am seeing for their equipment) but which one? I like the features of the 60CSx but it misses on one very important feature - audio prompts. The last thing that I want while riding is to be constantly looking down at the display of a GPS when I should be paying attention to my surroundings and the road ahead. To be able to programme in the route I want to take and then be told where to go while riding would be excellent. So if not the 60GSx then perhaps the Quest. My concern with that unit is that you can not upgrade the memory size. I live in Victoria, Australia and perhaps this is not as much of an issue as I think, but I believe it will be. The 2720 then? Well it seemed like a good choice (bloody expensive though), but I dont think it could be used for Geocaching as it does not appear to have its own power supply (maybe I am wrong on this point though). It would be nice to have a unit that can be taken away from the vehicle it is being used with and used independently (so a built in compass would be nice). Mounting any of these units to my bike will not be a problem as Touratech (a third party supplier) makes mounts for most of the Garmin GPS units. So, what is the advice from the board members? Is there perhaps another unit that I should research, or should I just decide what is more important to me features wise and just make a choice based on what fits best. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Steve

Gotta say it but I have always liked and respected Haggis Hunters sig line, and after a brief chat with him I understand where he is coming from. After all the BMW sales man is less useful in life that you person on the till in Tesco. In Life, people are judged on what they do at work, rather than who they are! Don't know the key to success? Well, the key to failure is to try and please everyone, so.....

I have heard a similar story (here?) with a driver driving through dense fog off a ferry terminal! AFAIK that's the original story - I think WW has maybe heard a version with a bridge but it sounds like a "Chinese whispers" version of the same thing. There is the tale of the German driver who put his new BMW into a river because his sat nav showed a bridge over it. He ignored all the road signs that said different!

My Geo-transport used to be a BMW C1 scooter 'til I blew it up doing one of SP's caches. My progress has been a bit stunted since. Hopefully cleared from the garage this weekend and I can get a new steed. Watch this space.

Well I looked at the Lowrance Baja 480 and it is not for me. I like that it is rugged and waterproof but it has a GPS dongle antenna that must be placed somewhere. I don't know where I would put that on the motorcycle and it takes hard wired 12 volts. So I'll look elsewhere, maybe the quest but am also looking at the Lowrance H2O C Plus which is only about 300 smackers. But I sure would like a huge screen. Another bike? Probably a Kawasaki Concours or a BMW RT. I have the Beemer cruiser (R1200C) and love it although it only has 60 hp.

At the first cache yesterday I left a toy BMW R100GSPD (thats a motorcycle). I thought that I would look online and find more of those but there were none to be found. I went to the store where I bought it (years ago) and there was nothing. I don't know what will be harder finding caches or finding trade items to put in them. Now I have to search and find out how to download geocache locations.

i usually use my 1998 honda CRV. it has just enough 4wd to get me through the mud and snow. i just hit 100,000 miles today geocaching. my mom was looking at SUVs this summer. i made her look at jeep libertys and NISSAN XTERRAs. the nissan was a beast, but she thought it was too much of a mans car. the liberty didn't come in a standard transmission 4WD (!!!!) she ended up getting a bmw x3, which is supposed to be great in the snow, but its not something i would dare bring out in the mud. regardless, that thing can MOVE on the asphalt. ben

We have a few options. When it's the whole family, it's a 2005 Honda Odessey. Lots of room for everyone and easy in & out for when we get to the cache sites. When it's just me, it's a 1993 BMW R100GS. Not the easiest motorcycle to look at, but it gets me everywhere I want to go, in all kinds of terrain and weather. It doubles as my avitar. Mount the GPSr on the handlebar and I'm off & running. Thirty to thirty-five MPG for a 13 year-old bike (with a 30 year-old engine design) isn't to bad either. We also have a 1986 Nissan King Cab 4x4, just in case. Keep on Caching - Kewaneh
