  1. BTW, Hope this is of interest - I don't mean to hijack the thread.... In May/June this year, we made a film with Get Shorty Productions for Channel4. It's 30 minutes long in total (the first 10 minutes is selection for the team) but looks 'briefly' at all aspects of the challenge, with some input from National Park Rangers, Mountain Guides, Mountain Rescue, local landowners, etc., and we hoped to give a balanced view of the pro's and con's. My favourite interview was with Joss Naylor MBE who lives in Wasdale (you will pass his house). He is now 71 years old, and still goes fell running with his dogs each day. He completed the whole challenge in under 12 hours in 1971. A lovely gent. Anyhow, I hope this video inspires those interested, and makes you aware of some of the impact this event has on local communities and the environment you visit. You will need sound on, and a good graphics/video set-up. BMW THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE Richie..
  2. 1993 BMW R100GS Bumblebee My Avitar - Caching along mountain fireroads. Found it! Magellan Meridian mounted to the handlebars and hardwired to the bike's power supply. Looking for a regular cache. Moving a Travel Bug along. Keep on Caching (however you get there) - Kewaneh
  3. Read this, and thought of Harmon . . . A cowboy was herding his cows in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW raced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?" The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, why not?" The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location, which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves." "That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the cowboy. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then the cowboy says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?" The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not? You're a Congressman for the U.S. Government", says the cowboy. "Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?" "No guessing required." answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don't know a thing about cows... Now give me back my dog."
  4. I can vouch for the RAM mount too. I've been using one to mount a Magellan Meridian to the bars of my '93 BMW R100GS for about three years without one problem. It doesn't have the possible vibrations of a bike like Rich720's Road King, but I've been down plenty of bumpy fire roads. Even a minor unplanned get-off didn't knock the RAM loose. As a by-the-way: One thing you might want to consider when mounting a GPSr to a motorcycle is to hook the unit up to the bike's power supply. As stable as any GPSr/mount/bike combination can be, even the smallest vibration can cause any GPSr to momentarily loose battery contact and lock up or crash, when the unit is on internal power. It's usually nothing major, but it can be annoying when if/when it happens. I can count on one hand how many times my GPSr has locked up, and it's only happened when it was running on internal batteries. This has been discussed in detail on the Adventure Rider Motorcycle Forums, particularly in their GPS topic forum, 'Layin' down tracks'. Hope this helps! - Kewaneh
  5. Well I had a bmw gs--I needed to attach a flat bracket off the mirror mount so I actuall cut the mount to make it mount flat on the metal and put rubber between the pieces for a bit of flex--I know the ram mount is good but $$$ and this worked very good--twisty
  6. I used a bicycle mount modified slightly to give some flexability to it and it worked fine on bmw gs--the garmin mount fits the 60cs snugly and never let go in over 25000 miles and I was on some mean roads--good luck--twisty
  7. Pollution : if people are worried about pollution, surely they should complain about polluting cars - that will include some, but not all, 4wd, but will also include alot of others, which are deemed acceptable owing to their drive system. Size : if people are worried about size then they should find a study of the ariel view foot print and complain about all cars over a certain size - Volvo V70's 7 series BMW, E class Mercedes etc. There will be some 4wd in this list - Nissan Patrol, but plenty that would pass muster. Safety - it comes to something when we are saying on the one hand - buy safe cars - but decrying people who choose a safe car, that happens to be a 4wd...I don't get it. Terrain - so it's Ok to drive 4wd off road, but not on road. So, if your day to day/week to week or year to year life has a need for a 4wd, you must have two cars. One sat in the drive only to be used in the event of a need for a 4wd and another for everything else. The other car would have to be a safe, small car with low emmissions. Consumption - some 4 wd are thirsty, but so are sports cars and some older cars. My MGC did 13mpg. I'm looking for the anti MG lobby and can't see it anywhere... My opinion, if you want it - the above are all red herrings. People don't like 4wd out of blind, unthinking prejudice. It may hark back to a class thing. Or that they are expensive and bought by people who don't take them off road so it's seen as showing off, or whatever. I will respect anyone who has issues with cars that are too big, cars that pollute, cars that are unsafe etc. I have no respect at all in people who are anti 4wd. They may as well say something as well considered as that they are anti blue cars.
  8. it started as a geocaching thread and i asked the moderators to close it then some one said someithing about bmw and questioned my riding then some one dissed me about my building a bike and this is where it ended up. this is why as the people that do post should be allowed to close the thread at there will. i would have closed this thread like over 10 post ago. but they took that away from all of us. remember?
  9. What does dissing BMW motorcycles have to do with geocaching? Perhaps you could open a thread in the Off Topic forum for your rants.
  10. I'm Not building Art i am makeing a "BAR Hopper" and you said I'm not building? i am just assembling? dude you have alot to learn about "Bike Building" when you take catalog parts and make them One Off's then you are building but if you are takeing catalog parts and putting them together then ya you are assambling but i didn't go to school to learn how to work with metal to assemble anything. i am building. you can't take a custem frame and just stick a motor in it. you have to fab up some parts to make it work. then you take the mounts to get them powder coated or chromed then there is the tank and mounting it. and when you fab up all this stuff you have a ton of work to mok it up and thats what i'm in the middle of doing is mok up. i'm still waiting on parts and after paint and everything is done i would have paid as much at a nice Fatboy and not much more but it will be at least a $40,000.00 Bike if i sold it when done. and as for BMW tour bikes they suck. hate to break it to you, but they suck. now write me back when you man up and sell everything to build you're dream. cuz thats what i did. i sold everything but my Bird and my GPS to build my dream and no one will rain on my parade. and when it's all done I'll post all the photos on the build on myspace. kinda a how to build you're own so you don't have to pay people like OCC $100,000.00 for a bike that really should cost $35,000.00 and only pay out $20,000.00 - $25,000.00
  11. Keeping my game life and my real life nicely separated, apparently By the way, I didn't see anyone's riding ability or bike preferences get questioned... until you posted that smack against BMW.
  12. FYI BMW makes one of the best touring bikes there is and will last much longer and ride much better then anything you can come up with. I'm guessing that you dont have a bike, never had a bike and you do not have the smarts to build your own bike. Your reference to OCC and WCC kind of proves that...
  13. Okay, we've given up what we ride, what about you? i got rid of my 92 fatboy and now building my own bike i have a rolling chassey from AZ Bikes it looks ridged but it's air ride i have an S&S 118 coming a 280 rear tire fenderless drop seat i have $15,000.00 into it and i am still making it up and looking for a good painter. i'm thinking of a Dukes of Hazard thyme. so i should be riding again in Jan. just got the 6 speed trans in and as soon as the motor comes in i'll get them together getting Jesse James Crack Pipes and Big Bear controles with a exile clutch controle. So to put it short I"M MAKING MY BIKE it's been a 4 year dream and it's only a few more months that it will be done. it's all American All My Own and i didn't use 1 credit card to buy any parts. so take you're little hondas and you're BMW's and go fly a kite. i'm the only one here that seems to be a real "Biker" and with that said Moderator, Please close this thread.
  14. BTW -- ever wonder why a motorcycle rider is called a 'biker,' but a bicycle rider is called a 'cyclist?' Motorcycle riders are called motorcyclists. Bikers are too busy hanging out in bars to actually ride much. I sometimes ride my Kawasaki ZRX1200 or my BMW R1150RT to the trailhead (if it's off a paved road), but neither bike is well suited for dirt roads. GW
  15. I would go for the garmin, have a garmin and i think they are very good. but the units are about the same. like a bmw and a merc. i would go for whats cheapesth
  16. Actually, you want to trade even, or trade down. "Trading up" means you leave the deal better off than when you started. That's not what we're striving for. yeah but remember that paperclip to a house story? If the cache is named Trade Up Only and people do, how long would it take for someone to get a BMW, for instance?
  17. 1) The winning powerball ticket-retirement here I come! 2) A BMW 325, black with all the bells and whistles. 3) A gift certificate to a good Ethiopian restaurant.
  18. I was once hitch hiking home to Fairbanks after back packing in Denali and got a ride on a BMW bike. It rained all the way. Cold and wet but at least I got home.
  19. Some my riding group do that and much more on BMW's, some of which are close to 20k now. I've got a picture somewhere of my father headed up to the Artic Circle in the snow, heh. -ajb

  22. Since the day I first heard "Deacon Blues" on the radio (I was 16 at the time) it's been my favorite song. I'm now 45 and use variations of that title for many things. My wife has instructions to play it at my funeral. In January I bought my first "sports car", a 2000 BMW Z3, so DconBlueZ seemed like a natural. This is the day Of the expanding man That shape is my shade There where I used to stand It seems like only yesterday I gazed through the glass At ramblers Wild gamblers That's all in the past You call me a fool You say it's a crazy scheme This one's for real I already bought the dream So useless to ask me why Throw a kiss and say goodbye I'll make it this time I'm ready to cross that fine line CHORUS: I'll learn to work the saxophone I'll play just what I feel Drink Scotch whisky all night long And die behind the wheel They got a name for the winners in the world I want a name when I lose They call Alabama the Crimson Tide Call me Deacon Blues My back to the wall A victim of laughing chance This is for me The essence of true romance Sharing the things we know and love With those of my kind Libations Sensations That stagger the mind I crawl like a viper Through these suburban streets Make love to these women Languid and bittersweet I'll rise when the sun goes down Cover every game in town A world of my own I'll make it my home sweet home CHORUS This is the night Of the expanding the man I take one last drag As I approach the stand I cried when I wrote this song Sue me if I play too long This brother is free I'll be what I want to be CHORUS Mike/DconBlueZ
