  1. There's a lot. Really active folks. One local friend travels regularly across the US, and hits other countries in-between. They might be a few months behind numerous times, maybe depending on whether there's an interesting person in flight. Started before us, has over 20,000 finds, almost 200 hides, and it doesn't look like there's any signs of quitting...
  2. No impact here in Colorado at all. Wouldn't really expect there to be any. 32 vs. 1450 bytes doesn't matter as much as the mechanics of actually routing it. 3. Well, I tested the two sites and I can confidently say that Geocaching Toolbox is incorrect. By a surprising amount. The Dutch site agrees exactly with my calculations. Interestingly, the Geocaching Toolbox result is not the spherical-Earth approximation. It is just wrong. 4. Me too! I went out to a park that I've been scoping out on the map with the intent to get 8 so I could finally get to 200. I think I found 14. I actually heard about it from a coworker who knows I go geocaching. Apparently it was mentioned on the local news because we landed a mega event, GeoWoodstock XIX - 2023. I might have to attend that, the only other event I have attended was a CITO a few years ago.
  5. As it is a milestone for me I thought that it is time to update my stats. I now have 200 First-Category-Post-in-a-Country waymarks (Copyright by fi67 ). That's more than double of what I had 3 years ago. Also, due to our travels of the last few years, the number of different countries has increased from 9 to 15. The 200 waymarks per country: Austria - 113 Albania - 6 Bosnia and Herzegovina - 4 Croatia - 2 Hungary - 1 Italy - 1 Monaco - 14 Montenegro - 2 North Macedonia - 21 Norway - 2 Poland - 1 Serbia - 19 Slovakia - 4 Slovenia - 1 Sweden - 9 With these 200 waymarks I covered 183 different categories, which means that there are a few categories, where I have the first waymark in different countries. For example, I have the first "Official Local Tourism Attractions" waymark in Bosnia & Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia.
  6. I completely destroyed the screen on my 6 month old GPSr and I hope to replace it with something below $200 (will consider above $200 if it's a good value). I use it only for geocaching, so paperless geocaching is a must. Otherwise I will consider any model if the price is right but my preference is something like eTrax 20 or better or eXplorist 310 or better. I live in Hamilton Ontario Canada, any Canadian geocachers with a used GPSr collecting dust? Give me a price. Thanks!
  7. (emphasis by me) Out of curiosity, I just scrolled through the latest ~200 or so logs on the cache. The vast majority of "finders" blatantly ignore one or more of the logging requirements. Almost always the "revisit", quite often the "local place", and sometimes even the very basic requirement of telling where the photo was shot. ... all of which is just as I expected .

  9. Your list is missing a virtual Are those other event types not available on August 13th when you could get the giga and theoretically get 16+lab? 13 + lab is the highest that has been possible in Finland so around 200 cachers have that. A handful have done 14 + lab somewhere abroad.
  10. On April 30, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands will be followed up by her son Willem-Alexander. Also at the end of the year we will celibrate the 200th anniversary of the kingdom of the Netherlands. A geocoin has been designed for these occasions. The price of the coin will be € 9,50 (incl 21% VAT, VAT will be removed when delivering outside the EU). The coin has 6 gemstones on the front. Size: 45 mm There are four versions: antique bronze, antique silver, polished gold and satin gold. The geocoin is trackable via geocaching.com and has its own icon: You can now make a reservation here. The coins will be available by the end of april.
  11. I've been seeing this a few times recently ... still. I try to avoid it by reloading an refreshing a couple of times and seeing if the results are different, but that sometimes doesn't catch it. Again, I just composed a bunch of drafts, reloaded the page, and 4 more for that date I just completed appeared. Now my logging order is messed up again. Why must drafts be a lazy load? Why can't they just all all the items on one page load to ensure none are 'missing'? It's not a complex query, and how often do users have say more than 1-200 drafts to compose? (I know it happens, as I do occasionally, but in the grand scheme, that page has got to be far from a heavy server load) It's quite annoying "missing" drafts while composing sequentially.
  12. I have had this same discussion with Garmin. It Starts getting so slow since SW version 2.7. With introducing the 4. digit after the dash. It was also suggested to use smaler files with less waypoints. (max 200 waypoints.) only one file. Start using GGZ while this is not handy especially on events where GPX files are exchanged. Garmin says it is not facing that problem (They do not use so many waypoints for testing. This same occurs at the GPSMAP 65 and GPSMAP 66 and those are newer models. The problem still persists. Garmnin [ Edited for profanity: "cares little" ] about it. Moderator note: Please review the forum rules about family friendly language. Continued infractions can lead to a ban.
  14. Been caching for a while and I'm just starting to hide some caches. I borrowed a friends Oregon 300 to hide a series of 6 cashes and it worked quite well. Unfortunately I don't have $350 to spend on a new gpsr . I'm looking for something under $200.00 that I can use for finding and hiding caches. What's my best option?
  15. A rose by any other name... Cantons, departments, parishes, governorates, etc. are the administrative equivalents of states or provinces, so no problem there. Officers of the proposed category only need to be aware of the administrative level of the entity submitted in order to ascertain its admissibility. Again, no problem, beyond a category officer's obligation to become intimately familiar with the administrative structure of some 200+ countries. No problem... ... BUT I understand there's more than one Wiki for that. EX: Wiki1 - - - Wiki2 Then there's the wind, or lack thereof. Keith
  16. Today, we released another set of small improvements to the Search Results experience: Players can now add 1000 caches to Lists Without any sub-selection applied, the default button now shows “Add 1000 to List” With the select-all box checked, the button reflects the total results of the page, e.g. "Add 200 to List" With a sub-selection checked, the button reflects the number of selected items, e.g "Add 1 to List" We’ve updated the cache type icon size and overall padding on the page. This reduces row height and prevents the checkboxes from bleeding into the background. We’ve updated some page styles to better reflect default, hover, focused, and disabled element states: Filter button "Learn more" links Add to List button Map geocaches button Column headers Cache Title Favorite point numbers Trackable numbers Part of a GeoTour icon
  17. A friend of mine is having problems with his GPSMAP62ST. He went on a hike up around Bumping Lake (Washington State) and had between 20-200 feet difference on his track. The 62 is set to true north. I can see 10-20 feet difference but 200 plus feet on a hike. This is on a road or improved path and not bushwacking. The path is on the base map that came with the 62. It is up to date and the compass is always calibrated. The compass is set to auto so I don't know if that would cause that much of a difference. Any ideas?
  18. I have used this for many years and 200 caches around the world, but I am done with now. Please be the first to inquire!
  19. How do I find a specific cache? One of the puzzles in my area asks that I find the latitude of the 200,000the hidden cache according to this web site and another being the coords for the 500,000th. I don't know the name of these caches or who hid them. I've tried searching for the number but it's not listed as a number - I suppose it had an actual name - I checked the history of geocaching in the learning section and found nothing there either. Is there anywhere where this could be listed or where I could find the info on the web page - I searched the forums but it's not listed there either - how can I find this?
  20. Hi all, i am looking for one bed/bench/whatever for sleeping and not to be staying outside during nights. I will land the 6.8. in Seattle. Perhaps someone has a tipp for me, where to search for it. The 2 hostels i found on hostelworld are fully booked And Booking.com started around 200$ the night. The 8. my plan is to go to Vancover via Greyhoundbus 12.8. back to Seattle. Many thanks in advance. Michael/Mikkky from Germany.
  22. A lot of improvements have been made, including making the game more accessible to a new generation of geocachers through the use of the free Groundspeak geocaching app and other third party geocaching apps. I love that you can just be sitting someplace unplanned, like a highway rest stop, pull out your phone, search for nearby caches, and find one nearby. I started 11 years ago with a Garmin eTrex H without a serial cable and had to type in all the coordinates that I wanted to find by hand, using the enter - up - down - back buttons. Finding the 32 stage multi cache "The Bridges and Arches of Central Park" was brutal planning-wise (though still my favorite cache ever). Adventures have been introduced, which I describe as a location-based game created by Groundspeak that is not geocaching but similar to it. You need a separate app for Adventures. Each lab cache (the individual parts of Adventures) found counts as a find on your geocaching profile, which was a great marketing ploy by Groundspeak because they had a built-in community from their main game of geocaching. Lab caches are like geocaches except they lack physical logbooks (as do virtuals, webcams, and earthcaches), they lack difficulty and terrain ratings, online log write-ups, coordinates for finders to use their GPS receivers, lack of GPS receiver support, they don't show up on your find list, and they don't show up on the geocaching map. You must use a smartphone, and when you get within a certain radius, the ability to answer the question you need for a find is unlocked, and when you enter the answer, you get your +1 find count and that's it. I'm a little snarky about Adventures (as you can tell) but I'm hoping they get more integrated into mainstream geocaching, though from what I've read there are no plans to do that. The thing I miss most about them is writing logs, I enjoy that part of geocaching and feel cheated when I just type in the answer to some question and get a +1. ("What is the first name on the gravestone?" "Bob". +1) Webcams are almost gone (I heard around 200 left worldwide) but virtual caches are awarded through a lottery system occasionally. Premium membership is the same price as it was 20 years ago, which is pretty amazing considering inflation over the last 20 years. Oh, and the GIFF, the Geocaching International Film Festival. That's my favorite thing. In 2013 the folks at Groundspeak started an international film festival, asking geocachers to send in short films (1-4 minutes) for consideration to be chosen as part of a 1 hour film reel. From 2013-2014 the films were only shown in Seattle at an outdoor film event and on Groundspeak's YouTube channel, but starting in 2015, because of a rainstorm in Seattle (seriously), Groundspeak asked locals around the world to host this film festival in November of each year (except for 2020 and 2022). On a whim, never having made a film before, I entered one in 2017 and it was selected, and my film was shown to over 15,000 geocachers in over 50 countries at over 600 events. Pretty cool. My films have been in the film festival in 2017, 2019, and 2021, and it helped me start my YouTube channel (see my profile if you're interested). Who knew as a middle aged engineer that I'd one day become a filmmaker thanks to geocaching. Welcome back, enjoy the game, it's a lot of fun still.
  23. Hi, I'm taking a 4 day cycle tour. I want to be able to save trip data from my garmin each day for a daily record. However, I also want a cummalitive total of data for all the days, as well, to upload to Garmin Connect at the end. Is this possible ? I can't get my head round how to do it. Any ideas? May thanks Martyn
  24. I have a Bushnell Onix 200 Color that I would like to sell or Trade for a Maggellan or Garmin Etrex. I know these Bushnells got a bad wrap but once I studied the books, it worked OK for me. I found it at first to be a bit confusing but after I got used to it, the software worked ok for me. With todays technology and simplicity of newer GPSs, the old timer Handhelds are a bit cumbersome. I downloaded GPSBabel and found it easy to work with the software that came with the Bushnell. Having the GC site up and downloading the caches, then using GPSBabel to convert into the Busnell software, It downloadeds right into the unit. The accuracy I have to say I found very good once in the field. I had my iphone app up in one hand and the onix in the other (paint that picture in your head) and both were right on. One thing I noticed right out of the box is the Onix found satilites right from my couch in me house. That impressed me. Anyway, please do not consider buying or trading if you are not one for digging in and really figuring these out. At first I fumbled over the menus and software but stuck with it and had good luck with this. Why am I getting rid of this? I use mostly my iphone now and want to trade for a simple unit so I can teach my grandchild the hobby. This Onix is above her head in learning I do have to admit. It comes with the software, book, and USB cable interface. The unit is in great condition cosmetically. I can send pictures if you are interested. I would rather trade this than sell it. Thanks for reading and if you are interesated and have any questions, please ask. I would like a clean and friendly exchange.
  25. Morning, yesterday i visited a graveyard. I noticed that only a few gravestones were older than ap. 200 years. 1300 graves -> only about 5 older than 200 years. It would make sense to waymark them because often the really old ones decompose within time, so pictures and names are away. I'm doing genealogical researches for my family, so having dates from old graves online would be great. Perhaps there is a category for them yet? Cheers lumbricus
