  1. I am saddened to see the ending of what was to me the "best cache ever". These physical markers "on the ground" that tied the world together, making our maps more accurate and placed with such tremendous effort are very significant to me. No matter what the type, vertical or horizontal control points, gravity measurement points, border markers or historical places markers, they all mark an important essentially permanent spot on the earth where something is being or has been measured. I like to think of these things when I locate one. And best of all this cache was created and managed by a surveyor who has walked the walk and talked the talk. He posted only those survey monuments that fitted his vision and didn't violate geocaching rules such as private property locations. I want to thank outforthehunt for his efforts over the years, it was greatly appreciated by us. It seems strange that this cache (GC43F3) and its twin in Great Britain (GC45CC) which are essentially related directly to the real world of map making and exploration, a geocaching theme I believe, are to be terminated. Whereas endless and mindless matchstick containers placed along a road on a fence post for no other reason than they are 170 meters from the last one continue to litter the country side. Surely, there is room for both ends of the game, The lowest common denominator always results in a weaker product unfortunately.
  2. Once again, nothing is stopping anyone from continuing to find these things. The only difference is you wouldn't get your +1 anymore. The "special feature" you talk about is the problem. Anyone claiming it would spoil caching not to have it is being a bit disingenuous. Essentially all they are really saying is they are only searching them out for the numbers. I'm sure the numerous posters on here that have visited multiple YOSMs will be amused by the idea that they visited them 'for the numbers', whereas of course logging large numbers of trads, multis and letterboxes was for some higher purpose. You found that cache 453 times. I can see why you are upset about it. I suggest you go onto the YOSM site (http://www.yosm.org.uk/cacher_stats.php) and see just how far Tundra70 has had to travel to enable him to log it 453 times before you make such comments!

I agree with Tundra70. To me, this argument that if someone wants to log a cache they are only in it for the numbers doesn't make sense. You might as well say, why not stop all logging of all finds for all types of caches? People can still look for the caches if they want. Cachers find this YOSM cache all around the country because they enjoy it. And sure, part of that enjoyment is recording the finds, seeing which ones you have done, which remain, etc. Just like most of us enjoy logging our finds. For some, that includes seeing their name on a "league table" of how many YOSMs they have found. I don't see anything wrong with that. I've only found the YOSM cache twice. So I'm not personally emotionally attached to it. But I understand for many, it is one of their favourite part of geocaching. And it is good if Groundspeak listens to how popular it is. If they decide there can't be an exception, and for the greater good multiple logs will no longer be allowed on this cache, so be it. It will upset some cachers. I don't think many will quit the game completely.

Anyone claiming it would spoil caching not to have it is being a bit disingenuous. Essentially all they are really saying is they are only searching them out for the numbers. Northumbria biker found that cache 307 times!! Even found his own caches 11 times. Also double found 4 times on other caches. Hes serious in bumping up his numbers. Hes upset that GS is putting a stop to his number bumping.

The difference being that I log each of those only once. Even if I went out to find a 700 stage multi, I wouldn't log each stage as a find...I'd log one find, anything additional being a Note.

  10. At least it'll give us something to talk about at a local event tonight where, coincidentally, I'll be logging the travelling Cuckoo cache for the 2nd time. I don't see why exceptions couldn't be made to the new rules for duplicate logging on these old caches - it should be easy enough to find caches within the database which are eligible.
  11. Hear! Hear! I agree with the premise that one should be discouraged from approving their own waymarks. But it definitely would have been better to talk to the person in question (they're not just a Waymark handle, ya' know) before posting it in the forums.
  12. I am happy that the scan came back with good news. Still, I hope that barefootjeff takes things slowly since concussions may not show up on CT scans. You never know when something will happen. I joined a group last week to kayak around sea caves for an earthcache. My wife and I were the only ones with kayaking experience - although not with that type of kayak with that type of launch. But in any event it was embarrassing to be the only ones who flipped a boat. And we won't talk about the time a branch broke in a tree as I was climbing in search of a cache or a turkey attacked me while I was biking. Of course I have been known to trip on a sidewalk. It looks like a fun location. I wish I were there!
  13. So I did talk with the "culprit" briefly at school and he said he put one of the geocaches back, probably the one that had the logbook he held up to my face. I'm going to talk to him with my advisor today, and hopefully he will stop before his behavior goes to far, he's also going to say his part as well so I will let you know his side
  14. No i dont blame anyone but you cant tell me you can search for a cache without leaving search marks or without trespassing maybe prohibited property... And you talk in one person, i talk in manny persons who seek on the wrong places because of the fact there puzzle answers is wrong.
  15. It's there for all to see. Then please suggest a second approach to solving your imaginary problem so we can talk about something you won't deny we're talking about.
  16. So you did talk to your adivsor and she talked to him? Now that he's starting to receive more official attention, he may stop. He clearly doesn't respect you, but an adult with some authority might get is attention. I'd ask a real policeman to talk to him next; that'll scare him, especially since he told you not to report him. He's scared of authority. You could stop a destructive behavior from escalating into a real crime. Once he gets bored with stealing caches, it's not much of a stretch to move on to smashing mailboxes or other vandalism. Maybe one day he'll thank you for this. I already said I can't report him to the police, do you really expect me to defy my parent?

  18. I'm a teacher at a high school and if your high school has a police resource office you might think about telling him. While they probably can't do anything to him it might stop him from stealing more if they spoke with him. If you don't feel comfortable talking with the campus police, you might tell a teacher you trust and have them talk with the resource officer. I feel bad for you as peer pressure can be pretty tough in high school and sometimes speaking out can be difficult.
  19. @rehcacoeG Wow, talk about perseverance. Apparently it is in fact missing. So, oh well!
  20. I could care less about the e-mail, and I'm not worried about big brother. I just don't wan the decision process to become centralized and rigid. A rigid, centralized decision process can be useful to solve hard problems, but the more we talk about this, the less convinced I am that there's any problem here at all.
  21. I guess if you already "tried to talk him out of it but he won't stop", there's really not much more you can do if you don't want to go the contact Groundspeak route. Though if a CO of any missing cache near you is reading this now, you may well get an email... I kinda agree with AustinMN that this person probably isn't a "friend". Hopefully he tires of his new hobby and finds another "game" to play. - Certainly would be better than the possibility of meeting up with one not as nice as you about it.
  22. So I'm a high schooler and i told a friend about geocaching but unfortunately he took it the wrong way and has began stealing geocaches around Santa Cruz I've tried to talk him out of it but he won't stop, any advice on what to say?
  23. You ARE entitled to your fascinations and opinions. But how about just a welcome back to the game.. You did just fine. I actually can't believe there isn't a group of folks trying to talk this person down since they "only" have 10 finds.
  24. As some say there seems to be frequent issues when that auto-renew, and Groundspeak doesn't much care to talk of your personal issues in the forums, it's probably a good idea to simply contact them through the Help Center. It'd be Request Detail #2 - Payment Questions.
  25. I have no problem with this being about the icon. I probably would have driven to go to another 10 Years! event, but I wanted to not only attend one, but host one. And although we saw other stuff when we went to Baltimore back in 2010, we most definitely went for the Adventure Maze icon. The A.P.E. icon wasn't the only reason I went to Seattle in 2009, but it sure as heck was why we went to Snoqualmie Pass the first afternoon we were there. (I don't know why I didn't even try to talk the wife into going to Groundspeak HQ. I think she'd've gone, no problem. But I didn't. So I guess I'll have to go back.)
