Except this thread is Vista vs. Platinum not Vista vs. Gold or Legend vs. Gold. My Vista's compass and altimeter work pretty good. Who can same the same about Platinum? How can you evaluate accuracy and reliability of compasses and altimeters between two competing products when you can only have one product. That's the point of my joke about the cheap cost of no meat! Now that you mention it, I'm hungry too. C'ya. Alan2

  5. Derek Powazek, author of Design for Community, lists geocaching.com as one of Seven sites doing it right. quote:Geocaching has created a community, even though all the action takes place offline. The site merely enables the game: geeks place caches of loot out in the world somewhere, and then post the GPS coordinates to the site. The site facilitates getting those coordinates to players nearby, and the fun ensues. Then, after participants have found the cache, the come back to the site to talk all about it. (Forgive me if this has been covered already, I don't see it on the press page. The article is from 12/18/2001, I've been meaning to post it.) Very cool! Brenna Bump On A Log
  6. Hey all, I just started geocaching for the first time two weeks ago with my new Christmas toy, but have run into a problem downloading and uploading waypoints from my computer to my GPS unit (and vice versa). I don't know if anyone out there can help me with this (it is a fairly unique set up) but I'll give it a try. First, a list of my components: 1) Computer: Macintosh G4/512MB RAM/60GB Hard Drive (Note: Only USB available) 2) Operating Systems: OS 9.2/OS 10.1/Virtual PC 5.0 running Windows 98 3) GPS Unit: Garmin Venture with Serial Port cable 4) Connector: Keyspan Serial-to-USB converter cable 5) GPS Management Program: EasyGPS Now the problem. I've installed Virtual PC 5.0 running Windows 98 on my Mac and have successfully downloaded EasyGPS. At this point both products appear to be working well and as advertised. Next, I've locked in the Serial cable onto my Garmin and attached it to the Keyspan Serial-to-USB converter and plugged that into my computer. I've tried receiving waypoints from my Garmin using Easy GPS, but nothing is working. I'm not sure how to set up everything so that they talk to each other properly. The Keyspan is shown in Windows Device Manager to be on the COM3 port, but when I choose COM3 in EasyGPS's preferences I get a message that no connection can be found (and yes, the Garmin is on at the time). Virtual PC allows you to configure COM1 and COM2 ports, but I don't see a way to point either one to the Keyspan/Garmin (the only choice that shows up in the pull down menu is Internal Modem with a place to Check "Non-Modem Device"--I've tried this setting, but that hasn't worked either). Has anyone else out there run into this issue? Any suggestions on how to set everything correctly? I'm sure that I've seen references that this is all supposed to work, but I'm clueless at this point as to how. Thanks in advance for any help, darkbodhi

    Happy New Years!

quote:Originally posted by HIltonfamily:So Mopar... If your biz is snow removal come and cache my way......And while you're here...... I wouldnt want to go NEAR your neck of the woods! I read in the paper here that there are complaints about price gouging up there after all the snow you had. The example they gave was someone charged a senior citizen 200 whole dollars to remove 7ft of snow from her driveway! Maybe rates are lower there because you get more of it, but if my own mother wanted 7ft out of her driveway here (30ft long) I wouldnt touch it for under $500! Anything over 9inches get billed at whatever the rate for 8inches was PLUS $125 per hour. You need a front end loader to move that kinda snow, not a plow. The driver alone gets $50-$75 per hr. Then often it has to be carted away cause theres no place to put it. That guy needs to get paid too. We wont even TALK about how expensive plowing insurance is. All that for $200? GEESH!

    Hi from another newbie...

Hi Steak N Eggs..back when I as married, I always new where I was too, or it least if I didn't, my wife always told me where to go. Good to hear that you have her hooked too, but isn't there something in the law about possession being a large percentage of ownership? You have been using HER GPS for caching and using HER truck to get there, so doesn't that make it YOUR GPS and YOUR truck? Or is this why I'm not married anymore? Anyway, take care and talk to you later... ------------------ ------------------------- Huh, that?s funny, the sun is setting in the East tonight?.
  9. Only half as many in 14 months. Kinda like my caching pace. I should reach 1000 posts sometime in 2003. Do you talk this much in RL too? [This message has been edited by makaio (edited 06 January 2002).]

    Hi from another newbie...

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Yeah GLSailor, there is one thing about this country, there is a gazillion places to hide stuff here with all the National Forest land. I am orginally from Northern Illinois, and miss the 4 seasons you get up there, plus all the great fishing in Wisconsin. Anyway, happy hunting to everyone and hope to talk to you all again on here!
  15. Model railroad hobby shops have small rubber-mould sheets for pressing very natural-looking rock stiata lines into plaster of paris for track layouts. Then you paint it and maybe add dusty stuff. Wonder if you could use these somehow to make artificial rocks. Talk to a model train person or club about your problem. He/they would have some ideas. Your hpbby shop could tell you who to call.

    TOPO USA 3.0

I like this program, but I can't even get it to talk to my GPS (Meridian Basic). I downloaded the latest GPS update from Delorme too. Waiting to hear back from their tech support right now.

You want to turn NMEA off and set the GPS's (and computer's) baud rate to 9600 baud. While the 315 will allow for 19200 baud, it virtually requires an external power cable or alien-nuclear-powered batteries and tends to be unreliable. (I got my GPS320 to do 19200 *once* and only once using a power cable). ... alexm

mazda626; I ued the zip file for updating and it would not work at first. I had to put all of the files in a seperate directory. Seems it needed "MAGUP.INI" to work. Spokane, WA hunters

Thats right, the hint gave the bearing to the final cache but not the distance. Hope this doesn't give a spoiler to those who haven't found it yet. I see you hit the Trent and Dale after John Shields. Do you know the owners or group that patronizes there? I have a good friend who used to be part owner with his aunt. Talk to you later.
  21. quote:Originally posted by JamieZ:Bill James has some baseball statistic that takes into consideration a bunch of other statistics. I think that one is worse yet than the QB rating. OPS (On-base percentage Plus Slugging percentage) is one. It's a pretty useful statistic for judging hitting ability and the ability to produce runs. Players who have OPS above .850 are good day-to-day players. About a dozen each year have OPS' over 1.000 and they are usually the ones with the most RBIs and/or runs scored. Barry Bond's OPS last year (1.374) was the highest ever, even calculated against some of the years that Babe Ruth had. Oops, off topic. I could talk baseball for hours... As for caching, I really don't care if I see stats or not--I don't view caching as a competitive activity. Others do, and that's cool. As I mentioned in another thread, I do want to see #found for credibility when reading log entries (i.e. someone with 50+ cache finds has a lot more credibility than someone with 5). A geek code for geocachers would be cute but not really useful. Seriously. If you see someone else's geek code, do you bother to decode it, or do you just think "yup, he's a geek". -E ------------------ N35°32.981 W98°34.631

    XML

Awhile back, there was some talk on the forums from Jeremy that he was thinking of posting the site also in XML if you put a parameter into the URL (&xml=true or something). Did anything ever come of that? Speaking for myself, I think that it would be quite useful.

    Quilting bee/cache

So, with all this snow......I'll have to quilt!! Last night I sat down and worked on a Scotish plaid quilt that I had started before November. Just need to make 4 more blocks and I will have enough for the top...Material was given to me from a friend...It was intended for kilts...With all the pieces together (blocks look kinda like a bears paw) the plaid seems to be moving!! Also e-mailed the magazine about doing a piece. I have to mail an article on all the particulars....200 to 300 words, by the 31rst of Jan. We'll see. I tend to be on the wordy side (just ask fearless how fast I talk first thing in the morning so the hardest part would just be in finding the time. Girlfriend will be delivering the design wall this week so stay tuned for pictures! DxChallenged
