  1. Model railroad hobby shops have small rubber-mould sheets for pressing very natural-looking rock stiata lines into plaster of paris for track layouts. Then you paint it and maybe add dusty stuff. Wonder if you could use these somehow to make artificial rocks. Talk to a model train person or club about your problem. He/they would have some ideas. Your hpbby shop could tell you who to call.
  2. Derek Powazek, author of Design for Community, lists geocaching.com as one of Seven sites doing it right. quote:Geocaching has created a community, even though all the action takes place offline. The site merely enables the game: geeks place caches of loot out in the world somewhere, and then post the GPS coordinates to the site. The site facilitates getting those coordinates to players nearby, and the fun ensues. Then, after participants have found the cache, the come back to the site to talk all about it. (Forgive me if this has been covered already, I don't see it on the press page. The article is from 12/18/2001, I've been meaning to post it.) Very cool! Brenna Bump On A Log

    TOPO USA 3.0

I like this program, but I can't even get it to talk to my GPS (Meridian Basic). I downloaded the latest GPS update from Delorme too. Waiting to hear back from their tech support right now.

You want to turn NMEA off and set the GPS's (and computer's) baud rate to 9600 baud. While the 315 will allow for 19200 baud, it virtually requires an external power cable or alien-nuclear-powered batteries and tends to be unreliable. (I got my GPS320 to do 19200 *once* and only once using a power cable). ... alexm

mazda626; I ued the zip file for updating and it would not work at first. I had to put all of the files in a seperate directory. Seems it needed "MAGUP.INI" to work. Thats right, the hint gave the bearing to the final cache but not the distance. Hope this doesn't give a spoiler to those who haven't found it yet. I see you hit the Trent and Dale after John Shields. Do you know the owners or group that patronizes there? I have a good friend who used to be part owner with his aunt. Talk to you later.
  8. At the November meeting of the OKC Geocachers, I volunteered to organize a geocaching event. I'm looking for ideas at this point. Formats, rules, etc. I've looked at the Foxhall Cup and I'm looking into orienteering events for ideas as well. It can be done as a small, casual one-day affair for us locals or as something larger, perhaps spanning a weekend. I'm trying to talk my neighbor into having his bank sponsor the event. If that happens, it will have cash prizes and probably span two days. I have a pledge from a friend to let us use his farm for the event. It has several hundred acres, including a canyon with a stream. Would folks travel to Western Oklahoma for the event if it was organized well (i.e. 1st place prize is $1000 with 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes and merchandise goodies)? -E ------------------ N35°32.981 W98°34.631
  9. quote:Originally posted by JamieZ:Bill James has some baseball statistic that takes into consideration a bunch of other statistics. I think that one is worse yet than the QB rating. OPS (On-base percentage Plus Slugging percentage) is one. It's a pretty useful statistic for judging hitting ability and the ability to produce runs. Players who have OPS above .850 are good day-to-day players. About a dozen each year have OPS' over 1.000 and they are usually the ones with the most RBIs and/or runs scored. Barry Bond's OPS last year (1.374) was the highest ever, even calculated against some of the years that Babe Ruth had. Oops, off topic. I could talk baseball for hours... As for caching, I really don't care if I see stats or not--I don't view caching as a competitive activity. Others do, and that's cool. As I mentioned in another thread, I do want to see #found for credibility when reading log entries (i.e. someone with 50+ cache finds has a lot more credibility than someone with 5). A geek code for geocachers would be cute but not really useful. Seriously. If you see someone else's geek code, do you bother to decode it, or do you just think "yup, he's a geek". -E ------------------ N35°32.981 W98°34.631

    Quilting bee/cache

So, with all this snow......I'll have to quilt!! Last night I sat down and worked on a Scotish plaid quilt that I had started before November. Just need to make 4 more blocks and I will have enough for the top...Material was given to me from a friend...It was intended for kilts...With all the pieces together (blocks look kinda like a bears paw) the plaid seems to be moving!! Also e-mailed the magazine about doing a piece. I have to mail an article on all the particulars....200 to 300 words, by the 31rst of Jan. We'll see. I tend to be on the wordy side (just ask fearless how fast I talk first thing in the morning so the hardest part would just be in finding the time. Girlfriend will be delivering the design wall this week so stay tuned for pictures! DxChallenged

    Any teachers here?

Hey Anton.....I went to a couple of your caches on Thursday! Thanks for such great outings!! I am a speech pathologist...teacher of the speech and hearing handicapped. Right now I work with pre-k exclusively but advertise geocaching every chance I get. I use the yellow messenger bag that is sold on geocaching.com as a briefcase for my papers....... I am also in the process of setting up some geocaching with teachers at school...Would like to have Eversure son and Butterfly girl talk to their classes about it as well...... But they are both on the shy side. Anyways, I standing up!! Have a great new year's eve..... DxChallenged

    Commercialism

quote:Originally posted by BLOODANGEL86:starbucks can burn they put a store up near my house and i hate it That's nice. Now go back the the game boards and let the adults talk. I have nothing against Starbucks. Personally, I find them a welcome port in a storm when I'm traveling, but I'm not into the bizarre culture they try to promote. As for commercial caches, I'm skeptical but I'll keep an open mind. I recall a snack company putting out commercial caches last summer and it met with resistance. If it's done tastefully with an understanding of what we are doing, I wouldn't object to it on a strictly theoretical basis. -E ------------------ N35°32.981 W98°34.631
  15. im thinking about trying some night time caching. reading over the post from ppl who have tried it, they seemed to really enjoy it, and it appelled to me. the thing is im not sure how well i could watch the trails with my flashlight or NVG if i get a pair and watch my gps for directions. i thought it would be cool if there were a gps that gave you directions to the cache so you dont need to turn on the light or bother to look at the thing for any reason. just set it to "go" for the coors and listen to the thing. i guess having different tones for the direction you need to go/ the direction. or even better have the thing actually talk, you it tells you got left, you turn and it tells you to go forward XXXFt./ miles whatever. and of course you would also need to able to turn off the voice so it wouldnt get annoying. another benifit is blind people could use this gps for geocaching or even to go to? the store maybe or something... how would a blind person get to the park, i dont know but its an idea....

  17. Hey Deb, I was thinking of you when I heard of all that snow. Good time to quilt, eh? Here in the Detroit area we got about 2". I wish I had some time off so I could head your way for some skiing.

  19. Hey Teepee....might just take you up on it!! I think taht any caching that I do now will have to be far from home. The trip was planned to celebrate son's 12th birthday...in lue of a party.... Ended being the best thing we could have done.... Caching was great other than frozen toes from Butterfly girl who decided to look really trendy....... Sister flew in from NC and had to land in Rochester as the airport was closed in Buffalo so we picked her up on the way home. Right now there has been no new snow since 3 yesterday. But just wait until the wind picks up....4-5 feet of snow plus gusts equals..........A WNY maze....... BTW...when we cache and meet fellow cachers I open the bag and let them pick. Love doing this as I can talk "live" with fellow cachers and I find out what people like to find.......Last group chose a James Galloway CD DxChallenged hope to post a picture

  21. As has been discussed in numerous other threads, the online logging is half the lifeblood of geocaching.com. Even if you just put a "I found it", "I didn't find it", or "I got stopped on the way and didn't end up getting to the right spot", you'll be helping out *TREMENDOUSLY*. The online logs are what people use to decide whether to go for a cache. They let the hider know that the cache is being found (or not found). They let people who have already found the cache know that people are going to the cache. I've even seen several people go out to check on someone else's cache because they were in the area and some people had logged non-finds. While there's no law forcing you to log online, I would ask you, no implore you, to please take the few moments it takes to log your find online. (It's especially important to me, as it's a 230+ mile trip to check on one of mine, and I'd have to talk J^2's MOM into letting me hijack her husband and their boat to check on another of them... I *KNOW* how valuable online logs are.)

I've got all the points picked out, its just a matter of setting it up and printing out the necessary info. That's about it. Hopefully the WEATHER (there's the weather talk for ya) will hold out. So someone will actually come to it. Oh sweet!!! Can't wait to head back up to Erie in the Spring! Actually, I could use a ride up there now ... we've gone through all the bottles we bought at WineFest this year. :-(

    Combining 2 interests...

quote:Originally posted by Brown witch:Has anyone heard about combining geocaching with horseback riding? I am particularly interested in New Brunswick, Canada. How about marking the site with accessible by horseback. Go for it Brown Witch. Sounds like a great idea. True cachers will use any means of transport to find a cache. If they don't have a horse then we'll hoof-it. I'll be visiting a buddy down Salsbury way (spelling??) next summer and he has 2 horses. If its close enough maybe I can talk him into hunting your cache with the horses. Happy caching, Olar
  25. Talk to the land manager, what they don't want is people tromping through certain areas. There are areas that are the home to sensitive or endangered plants or wildlife almost everywhere. I can gaurantee that that this new park has several. Also there will be areas that will be archeologically significant, they definitely don't want anyone going there. Have them recommend areas to place the cache, they should not tell you or show were any of these special places are. They do this to protect these areas. These are some of the primary concerns of these folks.
