    Female Geocachers?

I'm female (and brunette), and I'm definitely the primary geocacher in my household. (I was able to sweet-talk my hubby into going caching with me ONCE, but never since. He likes being out in the woods, but prefers hunting to geocaching.) Although, it's his GPS that I've been using. The only time we have to fight over it is the week of his annual hunting trip to Illinois. I found out about Geocaching through a (female) net friend who hasn't actually tried it out yet, but thought it sounded interesting. I'm not sure how/where she found out about it though. Hey...as long as we're doing polls, I'm curious how many people here are also orienteers? If you like an excuse to get out in the woods, you'll defintely enjoy orienteering. They have several courses set up for various levels of length and difficulty. It's something the whole family can do.

    Garmin 3+

I can only guess $75 was not enough. Lets talk real money, already have Garmin V, but need a back up.Give me an idea of what you want for it. betina@austin.rr.com quote:Originally posted by crusso:Selling a Garmin 3+. Garmin Rhino

It's been a while since there's been talk about the Rhino, so if you don't remember, click HERE. Wouldn't that be just awesome for paintball??? ------------------ VentureForth out to the wild, wet forest...
  6. Man, after reading that thread i got a little PO'd. I really don't like when people think land intended for everybody to use is there personal propery. Geocaching aside, this Lance character has definite issue with anybody that goes into his wilderness area! You know you can't please everybody, but the talk about the NFS getting involved has me a little on edge, If they ban National forest, where can you cache, only on private property? 7. MrG. 1st, too bad we couldn't link up last night to talk... 2nd, Went to your sample site. It went through a bit of a long FLASH install process, and once finished, I got no rollover. No graphic at all in the 'short description' area. Does your rollover solution require flash? I did follow the install process that came up, but it still didn't work. ------------------ Team CacheCows of Wisconsin
  8. Well, my 2 cents. We have 8 FRS radios. All Motorola after trying a set of the Cobra ones I could tell a remarkable difference. The Motorolas are much clearer. We have the 250 and 6220 models. Use them for Cacheing and hunting (not for herding the animals) and skiing. Large family - 6 kids. Helps wife and I to feel comfortable with kids out of sight. Love the radios - and the kids. Get great battery use unless the little ones talk on them too much. We also use them for the 2 car thing going down the road. I have gotten some remarkable distance from them but have not measured such. Probably 4-6 miles line of sight. I reccomend them to all cuz they are easy, cheap and work. ------------------ "Because I said SO"

  11. I use a etrex legend with SA 9, and haven't had any problems getting the two to talk (well.. other than SA being a litle slow to recognize lock occasionally). I can upload and download from the unit without problems. I'm not overly impressed with SA's ability to calculate routes however. It often tells me to do things like turn onto a freeway from an overpass even though there is no onramp nearby, or telling me to get off the freeway just so I can get back on. It seems worse in some ares than others. -- Mitch

FRS is limited to 1/2 watt output power and is free for anyone to use. Typical range is 2 miles, considerably less in heavy cover, more mountain to mountain. I have talked 8 miles on mine very clear to someone on a visible mountain peak from the heart of Albuquerque. Used on a motorcycle, I usually get more than a mile range talking to my wife on her motorcycle (helmet mounted headsets, with my radio stuffed into a tank bag on my bike and hers in her jacket pocket.) Generally, If I can see her I can talk to her. GMRS is two watts, and you have to mail in a permit. I understand (anyone who knows different correct me if I am wrong) that the FCC permit for GMRS is good for your whole family and costs $75.00 for a 5 year term. GMRS should typically be good for 5 miles, I dont own one so cant give real life examples of its actual range under various conditions.
  15. quote:Originally posted by Gliderguy:I have three of the Radio shack mini FRS radios (catalog number 21-1859) that I absolutely love. they go for well over 24 hours on 3 AAA rechargables. Me and my wife use them with Autocom motorcycle headsets when we go out riding our streetbikes. these things are about the size of a pager with a 2 inch antenna on it. Like all the other FRS radios, the range depends on the conditions. I once talked 8 miles line of sight to a kid on a nearby mountain top. they get about a mile in the suburbs - vehicle to house. Midland has a new tiny FRS radio that I would love to get my hands on: the F-10. it is in the Cabelas catalog. I cant find it on the midland site or anywhere else though. I have the same radio shack radio as you do and I also really like it (except that it does not give any warning before it the battery low indicator comes on and I can't talk). Did you get one of the early black ones or do you have the silver one? I have the early black one from when they first came out and I think it looks neater being black than silver. Although you can choose "Manipulate" in GeoBuddy to change all the waypoints to Geocache, it does not bring in the Geocache icon as far as I can tell into MapSource. Yeah, I need to look into that. 20. Funny, on a very long cache hunt in a swamp this morning, I had contemplated a "Christmas" cache. In it would be a $100 bill. Granted you can't retire on a hundred bucks, but still, it's a nice prize for the effort. (I think) Maybe around next Dec I can talk a few local guys into chipping in to a pot and we can all place a jackpot cache as a team effort. And if I should hit the lottery one day, yes, I will do a cache with a nice gift in it...but the coordinates will be emailed to the local crew in this area before I post it on the website. Hey, I gotta give my hometown team the head start!

Anytime you wanna swing by here on the way to a cache, lemme know!

  23. Ahhh, good old "Alluvial Material". Well Mopar, I can't say that I will ever get that one (because it would be cheating since I was there when it was placed) but its nice to see that one on someones dream list. If you can't talk Bassoon Pilot into it (or even if you can) count me in if you plan a team effort to go after that multi-cache. Cheers! ~macro~

Wow, talk about asking forbidden questions, no-one will actually divulge the real locations. However I am on to a positive lead re the set near Matamata, although it appears it's actually closer to Hinuera. Wish me luck it sounds like I'm going to need it. Here's hoping. Now, who's the expert who's going to help create a themed cache for placement there if I can get permission?
  25. At the November meeting of the OKC Geocachers, I volunteered to organize a geocaching event. I'm looking for ideas at this point. Formats, rules, etc. I've looked at the Foxhall Cup and I'm looking into orienteering events for ideas as well. It can be done as a small, casual one-day affair for us locals or as something larger, perhaps spanning a weekend. I'm trying to talk my neighbor into having his bank sponsor the event. If that happens, it will have cash prizes and probably span two days. I have a pledge from a friend to let us use his farm for the event. It has several hundred acres, including a canyon with a stream. Would folks travel to Western Oklahoma for the event if it was organized well (i.e. 1st place prize is $1000 with 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes and merchandise goodies)? -E ------------------ N35°32.981 W98°34.631
