  1. My friend showed me his GPS the other day, he had it linked to his laptop, and I think he was using a microsoft map program. On the map was a symbol of his present location ( my house ) and it moved in real time to a new location as he moved the GPS and laptop. Can you tell me if I can do this with a "Legend" and would I need some other software ??? Thanks for your help. 2. I am due to take some time of work shortly, and have not decided where to head for. We will be doing some hunting while we are away, and I would like to ask you where some great caches are. We will probably head for the south of England, and we love the coast. So if you know of a great cache or an area with some good ones, leave me a note. Cheers PP Pepperpot is actually my dog, she's a miniature schnauzer that comes on all our cache hunts.
  3. You guys in the USA are very fortunate, not only do you have great savings on GPS units( I bought my legend in a target store in Orlando for $190 ...... the same model in the Uk is around $350) but you also have great deals on batteries too ....... about two thirds the uk price. 4. Your right, changing batteries on an etrex really is simple. Twist a clip, and remove cells, ....... thats it. Buy a yellow etrex for $100 for your bike trips ...... great battery life. Peppeprpot Pepperpot is actually my dog, she's a miniature schnauzer that comes on all our cache hunts.
  5. I thought my kids could go through some batteries, untill I bought my GPS that is. I have an Etrex Legend, and I am wondering which are the best rechargables for it? Also, because they are not cheap does anyone know a inexpensive place to get them from. 6. Thanks for all your help. I have downloaded easygps, it looks great for downloading waypoints. But I suspect that the mapping feature is only relavent for USA users thanks again Pepperpot is actually my dog, she's a miniature schnauzer that comes on all our cache hunts.
  7. Can anyone tell me what I can use the data link cable that came with my etrex legend for. i am not a techie, and the booklet that came with it was pretty scant. I have seen on screen maps with routes on them, is that possible ?? Pepperpot is actually my dog, she's a miniature schnauzer that comes on all our cache hunts.

  9. I live in the Uk, we dont have snakes ....... we dont have anything really, no alligators, no bears, no snakes ..... the worst thing that can happen to you on a British cache hunt is a nasty grass cut ha ha. However I was in florida two weeks ago, around longboat key and I did not know we were in snake country? Was I in any danger? 11. I Have found my first travel bug, (a bear) and registered it on geocaching.com can you tell me what my obligations are now. I dont want to put him in the next cache I find, I would rather wait until I travelled the country, and put him further afield. Do I have to place him by a certain time ? Cheers Pepperpot
  12. You dont say which GPS you are using. but if it is a ETrex Legend or similar, when you search for a waypoint it will ask you to search by name or by nearest. Select nearest and you will always heve the shortest route. By the way if you have not been on a cache hunt before I think 15 in one day is very ambitious. I went out lasyt night and spent 45 mins just finding one cache. Anyway best of look and I hope you enjoy your new hobby, I have three kids with me and they love it ! Pepperpot
  13. I have just been out and placed my first cache, as I was placing it I had an overwhelming feeling of responsability, I know that may sound crazy, but I did. I thought about all the people who may travel to find it, Have I got my co-ordinates right, is my GPS ok, have I filled in the online info correctly,....... only time will tell..... ITS GREAT FUN ! Hope some of you guys in the north west of England will have a look for it. All the best Pepperpot
  14. I have just returned from the usa last week where I bought an Etrex Legend for $199 about £135. The same model on sale in this country is about £240. So if you know someone who is going to take a trip to the states ask them to pick you one up. They sell them in Wallmart, Target, and the Bass pro shop. All the best ...... Pepperpot.
  15. Hello Again, I followed both of your advice, I set the Nav page to Bearing pointer, then I did the Escouts test. From about 2/3 rds of a mile the legend took me to about 5 feet away from the location. Thanks for your help. PS I live in the UK and can't benefit from WAAS. so the results are very impressive. 16. Last thursday I bought my ETrex Legend, while on holiday in the USA. Yesterday I found my first cache, it was vandalised and thrown in a ditch, today I check out the UK forum and find people at each others throats ...... how foolish of me to think this was a "walk in the park " I will percivere ...... pepperpot.
  17. mmmmm ...... born 29 th of june, Im an ODDIE !! Im here to check out the opposition, and it looks pretty feeble from where Im stood, ...... get your boots on, and lets roll !! Pepperpot
  18. Hi Can you help me. I have just been on my first cache hunt and "Found it" I am using an etrex legend. But I noticed a slight problem. When on the map page it took me directly to the location, but when I was on the Nav page the arrow on the pointer, when I was getting close approx 500 yards away, was pointing in the opposite direction to the way I wanted to go. I am assuming that this arrow should always point towards the waypoint I am looking for. Am I using it wrong, or do I have the settings incorrect. I hope you can help. And remember I am a GPS novice, be gentle with me. Cheers Pepperpot
  19. Hi I know there are quite a few differences between the two products, increased memory size etc, but I am at a loss which to choose. I have narrowed my purchase down to these and I would appreciate any advice anyone has who has used them both. Thanks for your advice in advance. PP
  20. Thought this might help. I have just made a posting on another page about the cost of Etrex venture model. I had a reply from someone in the usa who tells me that the Etrex venture retails in Walmart for around $160 ! That is one heck of a saving on the Uk price that can vary anywhere between £160 and £210. So if you know anyone who is of to see Micky mouse in Florida ( like I am in April) get them to buy you one over there. Pepperpot.
  21. Thanks for your replys. It seems that the ETrex range is half the price in the US as it is over here. I shall take your advice and wait till April Thanks again
  22. Can anyone help me? ...........I am visiting the USA in April this year, and I intend to buy a GPS.when I am there. I am visiting Orlando florida, but I do not know what stores stock them. I would like to buy a E Trex Venture which retails in the UK for about £200 or ($300). Do any of you know how much these units retail for and where I would buy one? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance G Whittle
