  1. I hope there are 4 coins, each representing the 4 current levels of earthcacheing that you can strive for.
  2. Biology EarthCaches, Thats a whole new website asking to be made...
  3. Maybe if we all asked nicely about having one made, maybe in the future they might make one.
  4. I was just wondering if anyone knew who was the first cacher to use a sig card to place in caches that they found? I was thinking on doing something about sig cards for someone.
  5. Maybe you could talk about how the observatory needs a type of rock to be based in that will only let neutrons through. Its just a thought. As of right now, old growth forests don't count as earthcaches, even though they are an important part of earthsience.
  6. As of right now, I think there are two. (This is my personal thought, NOT fact) In the future there could be more if earthcache.org becomes bombarded with listings and they become overwhelmed. If they do add more reviewers, I hope they are very knowledgeable on anything that may come there way.
  7. I agree that there should be a quality check as well. I have spent countless hours trying to get my first 2 earthcaches up to MY standards. I have seen some that are OK and to the point, and others that are done very well and quite informative. My second earthcache required a lot of changes, and additions to it because all of the info that I wanted in it. It was scattered all over the place and needed to be put into the right order. It also did not fit into the 8,000 letter limit that is on earthcache.org Another earthcache I am working on will have to be split into two earthcaches just to fit it all in. I will end up taking it to an expert in the field of this type of earthcache to make sure that it is right, and everything is the truth. I do not want to have false or misleading info on any earthcache I set up. I have been finding that EarthCacheing is more of a challenge then regular Geocacheing. Anyone can hide a container very good but it takes someone with a Kean eye for detail and the need to do something right, to make a very good earthcache placer.
  8. You forgot to put in the Question to what that response was to. This is totally different. There is more to the story then what I had put in originally.
  9. It was just a side note trainlove. They were pointing out the force that water has behind it even if it is 2 inches of running water. Now imagine that 2 inches of water coming down the side of a Mt. non stop for 4 hrs. It could take out anything in its path if it is not able to hold its ground. Besides what are your tires made of primarily? Rubber, now put that on a car rim and fill it up with air and I guarantee that it will float under the right conditions. Its along the same principles of Hydroplaning, I'm sure there is a mathematical equation like (em=f), but I'm not going to pretend that I am even close to knowing what it is.
  10. As far as a moderator goes, I think that we should be more or less "self moderated" with you MissJen stopping in once and a while to check on things, or if there is a complaint about someone posting something incorporate. Yes we did get off to a rocky start, but doesn't everything when it first starts. As of this moment, I think the forum is moving in the right direction as to the original idea of me posting the request for an earthcache forum. There are very knowledgeable earthcachers that use this forum and I (at this moment in time) appreciate them taking the time to help out, agree or disagree on all topics that are posted. I look forward to there responses and enjoy reading there opinions. There will always be that one person that needs to put there 2 cents in that does not sit well with others, or even says something way out of line that needs to be reminded of the rules. I will admit, that even I have been talked to about something I have posted, but it was in a P.M. and it was a very good discussion between myself and the moderator. As for now, lets see how it goes and hope that we will not need a watchdog to bark at every user that is very adamant about there feelings on a topic. I have no problems with anyone who says what they feel, unless its way off topic or is a personal attack on someone. That should be left to PM's. But if a dog is needed, everyone already knows now that I do not own a dog, nor would I put it into a fight
  11. OK here is the deal, I will not post as a sock puppet, or worry about someones feelings. If I have something to say, I will say it. I had been working on getting permission for an earthcache for about a week and a half, the park manager was on vacation the first time I went there, and would be back Saturday, I went back on Tuesday and found out that she had the day off. Went back on wednesday and got Her OK, as long as the district manager had no problem with it. I also found out that a fellow cacher (Rocking the Goat) was there that morning inquiring about doing one there as well. The park staff, as well as the Park Manager told them that I was working on one as well and I had been there a few times already and needed to get ahold of the district manager and get the OK and that they had no problem with it. As it was already almost 5pm I had no time to get the the district office. I sent an e-mail to the Goats that night about them being up there that morning and told them that I was just waiting to get ahold of the Park Manager that night and talk to her in person for the OK, and then go to the district office and get permission from them, and I'll let them know about how it goes. The next morning I get an e-mail from them (at 5:48 am) saying that they just sent in an earthcache in on the location I was working on. I called the district office the next morning and got the OK from them. I then go back up to Natural Bridge state park and tell them that I do have permission and that they were supposed to send a e-mail to the park manager saying so. I also told the park manager that the Goats said that they just sent one in to get approved as well, knowing full well that I was working on one there. To me that was just wrong and rude of them, to do that behind my back. They did not care that I was working on one for that spot, nor did they plan on contacting me to find out what kind of earthcache I was working on. Am I wrong in being upset about this or is this just the nature of some cachers that you HAD respect for. I spent a long time on getting my facts straight, explaining what earthcaches were to the staff and the Park Manager as well as one of the district managers, and learning about the area. Needless to say both of our listings are for the same thing, and I had no idea what they wrote up when I sent mine in, just I sent mine in Friday night, and they sent there's in on wednesday night. My listing Natural Bridge S.P. Rocking the Goat listing Natural Bridge Your honest opinion will be welcome, good or bad. Gene G. genegene
  12. I did one that the Geosliders helped me understand better when I got the answers wrong. To me I didn't understand the question correctly and went off topic of what they wanted as the answer. Even though I answered it wrong after they explained it better I was able to send them the right answer. I like it when I get e-mails back if I am wrong. It helps me understand things better.
  13. I like this site, It works quite well for me. It gives a numbers count by finds. Cacher Stats
  14. How many EC's do I own? What are my credentials? Do I have a dog? Ninth Grader? First of all, What does that have to do with getting permission? but since you asked: No one owns an EarthCache, you can not own something like that, you can have an Earthcache published and then say I have published X amount of earthcaches. I will be publishing a lot of them as soon as I get the permission from the park rangers. 4 waiting approval from the appropriate people and about 10 that I will work on in the future as soon as I have more info Apparently mine are about as good as yours or better since you wont post in your main geocacher user name. No, I do not have a dog. Use to though, A Red Tic Hound and Tennessee Walker Hound mix, unfortunately I needed to find a better home for him since we did not trust him 100% around our newborn son. I'm sure he would not have hurt him but I was not 100% sure of it. A ninth grader hides behind a fake name to talk like that.
  15. As long as they are a few feet apart and are not a complete copy from the other one, I don't see why not. If someone does copy the listing, I hope they ask new questions at least...
  16. Humm.... 23 caches and 1 EarthCache within the boundaries of Fort Knox property. Does that mean we need to go and archive all the Geocaches and ban there placers as well. Cav Scout: I'm not privy to the details of what is going on between you and Geoaware, but it seams like this is between you and him/her. Have you tried to contact him directly and talk about the issues that the two of you have. The EarthCache forums were not set up to argue about someone being banned from placing anymore EarthCaches. I requested this forum to be added to help people set up EarthCaches not fight about them. EarthCaches are under different rules then geocaches. The bottom line is "YOU NEED PERMISION FOR EVERY EARTHCACHE" If no one can direct you to the right person and you just keep going around in circles on the permission (road side earthcaches), then go to a Town or City board meeting and ask them, explain what EarthCaching is and tell them what you want to do. If they say its ok then let them know that you need written permission and ask if they wouldn't mind putting it in writing. Also explain that there will not be an influx of people to that location as to stop or slow the flow of traffic. There might be 10 people a month +-10.
  17. I was just wondering what are the best earthcaches that you have done? The ones where the EarthCache Lister has gone above and beyond the basics of the area and had you wanting to know more about the feature after you left.
  18. I think post 5 of Banning Someone will help to explain what is going on with the permission, and why its currently archived. The listing is by Cav Scout, who is "temporarily" banned from placing earthcaches
  19. The quote above is the basics of what happened. As you notice Cav Scout is not bitter against Geoaware or the earthcache program. If he is, then what was said was the appropriate way to handle the situation in the forum here and I applaud him for not using the new area as a personal attack against earthcaches or Geoaware. He made an error and even though I'm sure he is upset about the decision he understands the consequences of the error and I'm glad he has shared them with us all.
  20. This is from EarthCache.org. It is the first thing you read: The most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an EarthCache site is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. The Geological Society of America (GSA) administers the listing of EarthCache sites around the world. The GSA members are the ones who developed the idea for Earth caches not Groundspeak from what I understand. They have the right to ban anyone that they feel is breaking THERE rules. When you talk to anyone about earthcaches the main thing you should talk about is that the listing are approved by the GSA. The GSA has there name riding on what you put in the listing, where the earthcache is placed, and if the person in charge of the area wants the extra foot traffic, not Groundspeak. Groundspeak only lists them as a courtesy and a way to show there support of the environment. Now if a person has a bunch of earthcaches out there and none have received the proper permission then ALL of that persons earth caches should be Archived. If a person makes an honest mistake then I don't believe that they should have all of there listings archived and subsequently baned from creating another earthcache. Unfortunately this is not my decision nor do I want it. These rules have been created for a reason. We should all be happy that EarthCaches actually have rules and not guidelines like Geocaches. This helps in consistency of placements
  21. Most Park Managers are welcoming caching, particularly Earthcaches, they, as stewards of the park must be concerned w/environmental and safety issues. Here in PA one of the major reviews and at times a delay, w/the State Parks is the Endangered Flora and Fauna check. Another common requirement from other parks is staying on the trails or w/in “x” # of feet of the trail. Agreed, Most places I find are already known to most people but the ones that are not known are always the good ones to take people. These places are the ones that will be the most sensitive areas that will definitely need someone to go out with me to, and make the rules to logging it
  22. When I went to inquire about a earthcache location today at a state park, I received some interesting and positive feedback from the person I talked to in the office. But basically I was told if the park manager likes the idea of earthcaching, she will talk to the District Manager of all state parks in Western Mass. If he likes the idea of them I will not need permission from the park managers, just him on the locations. I will still want to talk to the local park managers anyways because they might have some other interesting places as well that are within the parks that I might want to look at. Besides its just common courtesy.
  23. Here are the ones I think the Geosliders were refering to: GC171P6 and GC16Y2V
  24. That's what I was asking about. There is a lot of history behind Old Growth forests. They are just like Glaciers (well not realy), but if one does come down and you cut it in half you can study the growth rings and learn a lot about the type of whether that has happened over the last 200 years if not longer. Tree rings tell scientists about all kinds of things like amount of rainfall, Volcano Activity, winter snow fall, and even Wildfires. If you want to see what I am talking about on a small scale, go into the forest and look for mushrooms on living trees. I recommend looking for ones that are dead of dying and cut it in half, we don't want to kill anything now do we. They have the same growth patterns that trees have, the wider the ring the better the year. A very small ring denotes a poor season for growth. I have done this many times and find that in a particular area, North or South of me the rings can be completely different because of rainfall. Since the mushroom lives off the tree it will show almost the same thing as the rings in the tree. I could get into the whole deforestation aspect as well, A Great example is the Rain forests. That's Old Growth as well. I don't mean to be causing any problems, it is just one of those things that I think would be a great addition to becoming an EarhCache type. I will do an entire write up on the area and hope that some day I can use it.
