  1. I'm just curious about something and that's all really. If the GS server is under a lot of strain, why not ask all of the Geocaching website Groups out there if they could help out by lending GS some of there (geocaching groups) server space as a way to help offset the strain on your server? As compensation to the groups, why not offer them a few PM's to give away at there functions or some of the products that you sell. I'm not sure how securing the info would be done, but I am sure that there are a lot of smart people out there that could figure it out. I for one would be willing to help out if this is something that could be done.
  2. It is... As long as you don't disagree with anyone but yourself
  3. When I wanted to do one it took me a long time ti figure it out on my own. I did finally do a "How To" guide on how to set up your profile using GSAK "FindStatGen3" GSAK Profile It needs to be updated and I think I know what I am going to be doing tomorrow. Check out my profile to see what I have GSAK showing.
  4. One of the 200 as well that want to be able to keep using it. I don't use it every day, more like once a week. But it is a good tool to have when I want to see an area. I hope the genius GSAK macro creators are working on this already, and creating a export macro to show caches using Google Earth. Once its gone and people can use it any more, this topic is going to explode. Why not have a notice placed in the weekly mass e-mail that gets sent to everyone and see what everyone thinks of it.
  5. likelyladybug: Western Massachusetts Geocachers (WMG) is currently the only one truly dedicated to Mass. Even though most of the members of the Southern New England Geocachers (SNEG) are Mass residents they cover other states equally. Eventually I do believe there will be one group dedicated to Mass. I think it needs to be a collaboration of cachers that want to see it happen. Looking at the amount of cachers that use the W.M.G., I do not see a Mass. Geo. Org. getting a lot of use at this time. Creating one is a very simple process yet can be a pain. Things needed for a State Wide Group: Getting the 501(3)© tax status for Not For Profits, TM's for the Group, Officers, Lots of Users. The 501 Tax Status is a very important deal. I am looking into getting one for the WMG because donations for our annual picnic are down this year because we do not have it. Colman will give any organization with one a discount on there products if you have the 501. The problem in getting one is that you need about $500.00 just to get it. The Trade Mark is about $100.00 Adventure Girls: Just because its called Western Mass Geocachers (W.M.G.) does not mean we don't think about whats happening to our east. I am currently pursuing something that is going to affect the entire geocaching community in the state. I need to wait on a e-mail or two before I can post what I know. I think that it would be great to see a Eastern Mass Geocachers site. I think it could lead up to some very interesting and friendly competition between the east and west. Gene G. Admin W.M.G.
  6. $30 bucks sounds like GSAK but GSAK is only $25.00 to order.
  7. whew, I thought that it was a special feature that you could get on the SD card
  8. I have a question about the SD cards for the Oregon. I am getting the 400t and I have 3 choices for the SD card, 512MB MicroSD / TransFlash 1 GB MicroSD / TransFlash 2 GB MicroSD/SD card What is the difrence between the "1 GB MicroSD / TransFlash" and the "2 GB MicroSD/SD card"? Besides the obvious amount of memory that they can hold, what is the TransFlash mean?
  9. If you have a Question about the Oregon GPS post it here.
  10. When you look at my Profile look under where it says Profile Information, Where it says Western Mass Geocachers and you see that little box just under that, None of that should be there. It should be a Image that is found here: http://www.westernmassgeocachers.org/images/WMGbanner.jpg If you see the banner, then the problem is only on my viewing end. Everything in the HTML coding where I edit my Profile is fine. I thought that maybe the size got messed up, but when I checked it to see, it was fine.
  11. Anyone else notice if the Group Logos on your GC profile (if you have on on your profile) have been re sized down to 1-1? On my HTML info everything is normal but on "My Public Info" its 1-1. Is this a glitch that will be fixed
  12. In my opinion, most of the negativity about the question came from people that are involved with NEFGA. The OP was just a question, "I thought per GC guidelines, events were supposed to be open to everybody?". Then all ***L broke loose with mostly members telling everyone to MTO Business. I would hate to see how the forums look on that groups site. From what I saw here, I won't bother going there and looking at it. It was just a question about how and why. The guidelines state one thing and another was done. I think it was a very good question and enjoyed reading many of the different answers as to why it might have been listed as one. In past experiences, I now know that there is also a difference in the way things are done on Groundspeak. There is only one rule that I know of on the entire site and I cant find it anywheres in print. No Geocaches are to be placed within (I think) 150 ft of a active R.R. Other then that there are no written rules, only Guidelines, and each reviewer can modify things as he/she sees fit to do because there are no rules just Guidelines. Now I have issues/Questions with this event. Before I could realy care less, it was your business. Now I am questing the purpose of your event and if it should be archived. 1) So you did it as a PM only event just to see if you could get anyone to notice? 2) Once it did get noticed and someone asked the question as to Why, you and your group just wanted to cause problems and make others mad and ticked off at the responses? 3) The only reason for the event is so people can meet up for a cache run? 4) Obviously you don't have room for a large group of cachers, so why host it at that location? 5) Is time an issue because you need to get out on your 24hr event cache run? 6) What Resources are needed more then a hand shake and the words "Welcome"? 7) Is that it in a nutshell? From what I have read and the questions I am asking, why not just post this event in your local forums? I don't see any need to waste a GC code for it.
  13. Yep sure seems like alot of you folks have Way too much time on your hands to sit at a computer all day and talk about somebody elses events. Get out there and HOST one of your own and get a little taste of what your chewing. Your missing the point of the OP question and have yet to answer nicely about it. Its just something that I would never do and would not see any point in doing it. If the host of the event wants to have a PM event only, then that is there decision, but I to was under the impression that events were to be open to the geocaching public. If it was going to be for certain cachers only, then it should be not be given a GC# and should be posted in a groups website or in a e-mail to cachers from the area. I like I said before, I don't care either way, but it is a good question to ask.
  14. These are the 3 most important things to do while doing a very good puzzle cache. I have had problems with my last 3 puzzles I have done. The first one was because I lost some of the info and I asked a fellow cacher that lived near it if they could do a cache run on it and get some more info for me. The info I got was not the right info and when it got published, the final cords were off. The second one was because of a bad GPS reading (ended up doing a master reset on it). Luckily I went with a bunch of cachers on its debut and I found out what I the location should have been and fixed the listing within 24 hrs and then published the listing. The third one was because I messed up part of the listing and added the wrong location info ie.. N42 26 wxy W033 44.abc But the best thing is to find a great location of interest (monument, historical location, something very interesting) and then find a location near by that will accommodate a cache, mark the location and then get information about everything on and near the thing you want to have cachers look at. Go home and then take the time and make the numbers work. This will be the hard part and can take lots of time if you want to have a good puzzle. Look at all the math that is involved in these 2 caches of mine GC1D0XF and GC15BYT
  15. It can't be the sole purpose of the event. If you look at a vast majority of the "picnics" you will see that there is caching but the main thing is the socialization involved during it. People can cache during the event if they like to but its not set up for that.
  16. I agree with you. Personally I would like to have as many cachers at any event I host. But if they just plan on keeping it small because of space at the "event at a nationally renowned eatery you'd need to be off your rocker to not enjoy." then let them do what they want. Every reviewer does things differently and allows thing that others would not allow, that's why they call them "Guide Lines" and not rules. If I did that up here I would never hear the end of it.
  17. As a very informal coin collector, as the coins get older I would be watching them very closely to see if there were any that were of value and take them and trade them for one that wasn't of value. Someone else might just take the coin.
  18. They must have updated the "guidelines", at one point you couldn't do this type of listing. All info that you needed would have to be in the listing. Now that they have updated the info I can do a (T-2/D-5) cache I have wanted to do.
  19. Massachusetts has restrictions around the Quabbin Reservoir already, and they are working on one for all the state parks for the rest of the state.
  20. Interesting idea, 1.) As long as its listed as a mystery cache, you can list that you can only log the find if you have the right Penny/Nickle/Dime/Quarter to go into it. If they do not trade for the right date, then you can delete there log for it. 2.) Just make sure the the previous finder posts what date coin was just dropped. 3.) The next person that wants to find it should bring 3 coins (of lesser numbers) with them just in case. Other then that good luck. After a while though the cache will most likely stop having activity due to lack of coins in the market with older dates. How many Quarters with a 1950 and lower have you found?
  21. Well I didn't make it to Eagle Scout because I got into it to late but I had a great time while I was in. I was fortunate enough to be able to join my troop from Stuyvesant NY (forgot the # and its no longer anyways) on the trek to Philmont N.M. in I think 92. We took the northern route and went up the wrong side of Baldy Mt. (ie.. we were not wimps and took on "The Wall") Everyone at the top just looked down the side we came up and went the other way. Another time while in the Adirondacks, the troop I was in, (about 10 of us) took on everyone in the camp up there and won every Tug of War. At one point it was 30 against 10 of us and we still won. After we took on everyone, we challenged the counselors. Once we knew we knew that had won that match, we let go of the rope and let them all go flying to there bottoms. They were not to happy, but it sure made us and everyone else laugh Ahhh those were the days, and boy do I miss them.
  22. The only downside to Hamster Caching is that if someone placed a hamster in a cache and no one has gone to get it in 2 weeks they become very unsociable. I found this little guy in a cache and it took a long time before he warmed up to me. I found him in a Ammo can with only about 1 day left of food and very little water. He is still afraid of the dark and hates to be left alone still. His name is CHUCKY.....
  23. I realy wasn't that upset about it. I just placed the notice in a separate file for future reference when I want to place a cache and use that GC #. I understand that you see caches when you do a proximity search for nearby caches and unpublished ones show up. I was just curious as to if other cachers have had the same experience with caches in there Que being archived.
