  1. I was not aware that he had a problem with it falling out. If it is one that is inserted into an external slot (like my SanDisk Sansa music player), he might consider a large capacity card like this: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Memory-Adapter--SDSDQUAN-128G-G4A-Version/dp/B00M562LF4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418864282&sr=8-1&keywords=sandisk+128gb+micro+sd Then he could fill it up with enough data to last a dozen years and secure it with a dollop of gorilla glue.
  2. Betting against Fizzy within the realm of this particular topic is, on the whole, a losing proposition of epic proportions. HUGE Roger that!!! Similarly, I never disagree with ecanderson!
  3. AFAIK, to geocache paperlessly, regardless of make and model of GPSr, one needs to have a Premium Membership.
  4. The inReach has far greater functionality than does the SPOT, such as: 1. In addition to pre-composed messages, the user can create messages in the field, and 2. The inReach can also receive and display text messages in the field. If you choose the inReach and require advice, check here: http://forum.delorme.com/index.php?/forum/103-inreach/
  5. OK, the Monoprice OTG cable came today: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=9724&seq=1&format=2 Subsequent to my last post: 1. I ran a PQ and it was emailed to me, 2. Opened up the email on my Samsung Galaxy II phone (Android) and stored the attached PQ file (zip), 3. I downloaded a free Unzip app from the Play Store and Unzipped the PQ results to GPX file, 4. Today, I connected the OTG cable to the phone and the other end to a cable for my DeLorme PN-60 GPSr, 5. Set the GPSr to the Connect to Computer mode and located the previous installed PQ files on the GPSr, 6. Used the phone's Move function to move the PQ file to the appropriate folder in the SD card of the GPSr. I then embarked on repeating the process of transferring a file from my Samsung Galaxy 7.0 Tablet (Android) to my GPSr in a similar fashion. Not surprisingly, the GPSr was not recognized by the tablet and I was not able to complete the transfer using the physical OTG cable. I was not surprised as I had a previous issue with one MHL device which could play movies on a HDTV from some Samsung devices, but not my phone. I exchanged it for another MHL device which did allow for the transfer. Conclusion: the transfer process between different models of Samsung devices is variable and one MHL or OTC cable may work for one, but not others.
  6. Can you run GSAK from a Samsung tablet and then use it in the field to put caches on a 62S or other unit ? I just checked the list of Geocaching apps available for Android phones and found some GSAK lookalikes. Unfortunately, they don't really provide any detailed descriptive material to see what they provide. OTOH, I will purchase that OTG cable from Monoprice to see how that performs.
  7. OK, allow me a go-back here: 1. When I first mentioned an OTG needed for my first Samsung tablet, but not one for my second Samsung tablet, that was about charging and not data transfer: 1a. The first had a wide, multi connector (20 or 30?) port, so I needed the OTG cable with male wide connector and with a normal size, male USB connector to charge, 1b. The second tablet has a std. micro USB port, so I charge it with a std, micro male USB cable with a normal size, male USB connector at the other end. 2. I have never tried it, but I agree with the OTG cable noted above from Monoprice to connect a tablet with the micro USB port to the GPSr for data transfer. Monoprice is always my first source for cables. This thread got me to thinking about trying to load PQ output files emailed to my Samsung Android phone from the phone to my GPSr instead of this Windows laptop. However, I now realize that the PQ results in two distinct files, parent cache waypoint file and a file with child waypoints (usually parking places). I like to have them combined into one file on my GPSr. Guess I'm currently clueless on how to do this on either my Samsung Android tablet or Samsung Android phone. Nancy, if your PQs unzipped have two files enclosed as do mine, you might have to continue with the laptop (on which I assume they are combined.
  8. Regarding the OTG cable. I bought a Samsung, Android tablet about two years ago and it required the OTG cable. I bought another Samsung, Android tablet about a year ago and it required a standard micro USB cable. But the lady at Samsung would know that.
  9. I was in Best Buy several years ago looking at a USB dongle that would tune cable TV. As the packaging was not specific, I asked a clerk if it would work for clear QAM channels, not expecting a answer. Which is what I did not receive, so I asked if I bought it and it didn't, could I return it for a full, no questions asked refund? He responded "yes" and the next day I did. Or, bring your GPSr, special cable (if required) and test with a demo model on the floor. (Would you buy a used car without taking it for a test drive?)
  10. I never disagree with BB. Now, each Thursday my PQs are run. I need to get them on GPSr immediately, before I forget and have to use my Samsung SII phone for a recently hidden cache.
  11. I'm off to watch Judge Judy reruns. Even when she selects the winner, at the hallway interview on departing, the loser always disagrees with JJ.
  12. What we need to do here is use Netflix to order up some Crossfire (TV arguing show) episodes, watch them and note that they never end with one of the combatants agreeing with the other and admitting that his earlier statements were wrong.
  13. YUUUP! Good Luck today....went out for a cache about noontime today that was just a few days old. My weekly PQ is due tomorrow and I forgot to put the new cache on my GPSr. Got to the site and pulled out my Samsung Galaxy SII with the Groundspeak Android app. Really almost impossible on a cloudless day. Hey, the saving grace was that the cache was hidden in a tree. Went for the shade under the tree to check the map and there it was! http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC5C093_bark-park-or-park-bark?guid=4f8718de-53bf-44e5-bec8-6bfc1d5d0e62 Roger that and I never argue with fm!
  14. As I read the opening post I find the desired unit described as in-dash three times. If this is the true intent, I expect that the OP wants the desired unit to replace the OEM, factory installed radio unit in the dashboard of his vehicle. I know that there are NUVIs that stick on a windshield with suction devices, but are there models which may be installed as replacements inside the dashboard? Example: When the AM/FM/Cassette died in the dashboard of our Jeep GC, I had Circuit City replace it with an FM/AM/CD unit (which was not external to the dashboard).
  15. Now that you mention anecdotal and conjectural pontifications, I would like to mention my current studies regarding the EPE characteristic provided on most GPSrs. As has often been noted, correctly, the GPSr manufacturers consider the definition of exactly the quantitative nature of the EPE to be proprietary and therefore unrevealable. (Note that similarly neither will GM reveal the failure rate of ignition switches nor will Toyota disclose the frequency of carpeting to accelerator interference.) Consequently, I am engaged in gathering the applicable data with which I may determine the accuracy characteristics defining the EPE displayed on my GPSr.
  16. ... For us mere mortals dipping in and out of valleys etc .... How coincidentally applicable timewise, next weekend I will traveling up out of the Mojave Desert at 2600 ft to 7300 feet to the High Sierras on Nine Mile Canyon Road. I'll have WAAS functionality enabled and the GPSr fixed to my windshield mount and periodically check acquisition through canyons, valleys and high meadows.
  17. Agreed, if you're an aeroplane flying above ground level. For us mere mortals dipping in and out of valleys etc where getting an EGNOS lock is nigh impossible I find no benefit in it whatsoever. But for those mere mortals traveling on the desert or large plains it makes perfect sense to have it on. Actually it makes perfect sense to have it on all the time. It certainly does not degrade the performance. 10-4, now that you mention desert, I will be travelling through the Mojave Desert at N35.00, W117.55 next Friday and WAAS will be on. I see no reason not to have it on, it is always and advantage when there is WAAS(W)aquisition and never a detriment when not.
  18. Agreed, my DeLorme GPSrs all have CDs with detailed Topo maps for the USA in the box. All the residential streets in my neighborhood are included. Perhaps this thread could be re-titled: Why do some GPSrs have very poor maps?
  19. The same rules apply about the "accuracy" no matter what GPS or even smartphone you use. That means you're likely to experience it again. There might be an "accuracy" of 100 and you never notice it. I'm just saying because if that's the real, and only reason you returned it, you might be in for a surprise. If you truly didn't like it, and prefer the new one for other reasons-then that's fine. The accuracy was not the main reason why i returned the device. eventhough I have to say that my garmin is very precise, but that is only compared to the magellan that I used 1 day and not in the exact same area.... but I like my garmin more then the magellann so i'm happy caching with my garmin. According to this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy_and_precision, The terms accuracy and precision are not synonymous and interchangeable. Consistent with a post above, the EPE defines the probability of a number of data points being within the defined circle. Consequently, the EPE value is representative of precision rather than accuracy. CowboyPapa Who just came across his long unlocated slide rule of 50 years and will now use it to calculate the EPE of his GPSr.
  20. Here is my advice regarding the advice above in posts #10 and #11 with respect to which GPSr is functionally capable of providing support in the primarily paperless pursuance of the geocaching hobby. The author of Post #10 has recorded 761 cache finds. The author of Post #11 has no recorded cache finds. CowboyPapa Who does not ask his tailor at what temperature is the chicken cooked.
  21. Check eBay....if it is not on eBay, it's not possible to buy. Don't feed the troll. The link OP provided states the book is only available in PDF or paperback. My apologies..
