  1. As HH says its a standard feature of Windows Mobile 2003 (and doubtless others too) It appears under Programs and is called Data Backup. I had sort of vaguely looked for it before but looked in amongst the B's (for Backup) not the D's (for Data). I have always done a PC (Active Sync) backup weekly and after instaling any new program but have never needed them until yesterday when sod's law decreed it had to happen in the field (churchyard actually). I have a Garmin M4 using Win Mobile 2003 and can't find this useful gismo. Any ideas welcome! The reason for my interest is that, just as I disconnected the charger unit, the PDA went into a hard boot and lost everything - calendar entries, MM software, tracks, GPS settings ..... yes, the lot. The mapping on SD card was fine. So some sort of backup utility would come in useful - using activesync means carrying the desktop around which makes a PDA seem unwanted! Thanks Jennie's Dad
  2. Thanks all, especially to Jennie.m for starting this for me. I'm Jennie's Dad - still reliant on her for some things (yep - we gave up with the video controls too). To answer the queries and update: The unit was not fully discharged. I use it for office calendar and caches, and had done an autosync and left it on charge. When I unplugged the charger - wham! It rebooted, deleting the calendar, it's autosync ID and the memory map prog. Mapping on the SD card was fine. I have resynced the calendar and downloaded memory map - all work . Things like tracks are gone still I don't know of any back-up facility. So if anyone lese does, please let me know. Today I phoned Garmin support. He told me these things happen - not frequently - if the OS data folder has been corrupted. I did not feel convinced. The moral is - don't rely on these new fangled thingies! Jennie's Dad
  3. Despite the name we are two, one of each as Jennie's Dad decided to join in but not to have his own login. We have done most of ours together, but 2 on our own each. I have been confused as to how many of the males and females have been dogs and other pets. As for safety I think everyone should have a plan for emergencies of any type. At least with a GPS it would be possible to give an exact location if calling the emergency services. However a GPS and mobile are also items worth stealing. Few things are worth getting hurt for. Maps are not worth stealing and are also used by muggles, so good camouflage. Keep the GPS and mobile safely out of sight. When you have got close to the right location, check there are no muggles about you'll be safe to use the GPS. Always be aware of the nearest place to go for help. Maps help for that too. A really loud whistle can be a deterent as well as a call for help. Chocolate is good as an emergency ration, but Kendal Mint cake doesn't melt as easily. Sorry, rather off the subject. I'll stop now.
  4. I know "The Neal Clan"'s corvettes are wanting to go that way. They are in the East of England though in various caches. We left one in The Stanstead travel bug hotel. We had hoped it would travel by a devious route from there, but it seems to be stuck. I am sure they would appreciate help. Enjoy your travels.
  5. Is Essex taken? Does it have to be the middle? I would like to have a go. Jennie's Mum
