    • [*]Check the going rate for new and used equipment before you post. Review recent sales of similar items in the garage sale forum, and recently completed eBay (not current/ongoing) auctions to find realistic pricing.

Shouldn't this be the buyers job. It shouldn't be the sellers job to make sure you are getting the absolute best price around; if prices are better somewhere else buy it.

Thanks for the info. I haven't used my Montana in a motor vehicle yet. I am embarrassed to say that I am not sure to what you are referring.

Is the Montana suppose to be able to show posted speed limits and lane assist? If so, are those abilities built into the latest version of City Navigator?

I use CN NA that is about 3 years old.

I have 2012.1 version of city navigator loaded so that could be making the difference.

  3. I would also like to make a quick note about battery life. Running on AA batteries I can get about 9 hours with the backlight on high, and only (maybe) 3 hours with the rechargeable lithium battery. That was kind of a disappointment until I realized that while using the lithium battery pack the backlight is as bright as when the Montana is plugged into external power. Tomorrow we are taking a trip to the zoo so I will give it a try with the backlight at 80% (comparable to the backlight brightness with AA batteries) and see how much things improve. It also takes about 4 hours for the battery to completely recharge (with the gps off).

  4. Out for a geocaching joy ride today, traveled 165 miles and the montana never displayed the posted speed limit. The lane assist feature did prove to be useful.

Here is a picture of the lane assist on a day that the montana decided to show the posted speed limit.

  5. Great review, seems to be spot on. I also ended up returning my 710 as well. One major flaw with the gps that I haven't seen mention anywhere is the map detail. Residential streets and forest roads only show up when you zoom into .25 mile. And the ONLY map data shown on the screen above 1.5 miles, are lakes and interstates. The 710 does have and option to change the detail on the map, however, it did not change when the roads were shown. The 710 also would never update your position if you walked under 2 mph. I could easily walk 50 feet with out it even knowing it, which makes it less than ideal for geocaching.

While those were the main reasons I returned mine, the following did not help it either. The explorist suffers from extremely poor battery life (about 3 hours typical use), and the compass had to be calibrated anytime the gps was turned off or put into suspend mode. I don't think I will be trying magellan anytime again soon.

  6. Found a big bug today. If you have your Montana set to change profiles upon connecting and disconnecting the automotive mount your gps will not be able to restart if you let it shut down when removed from the mount. The gps will boot up normally up until it is about to display the main menu, then the screen will flash and it will shut down. The only way to fix it is a hard reset. Anyone else care to try this?

How do you set it to change profiles upon removing from mount? OOps, nevermind, I figured it out.

I have mine set to switch to automotive profile when connect to the mount and geocaching when disconnected. Did you get this to happen on your Montana?

  7. I connected it to my Mac computer, deleted all 249 files (geocaches) I had downloaded, emptied the trash, then disconnected. still same thing.

Delete the gpx folder. Just to be sure everything is gone. I have had tracks that would still show on my oregon even after deleting everything in the gpx folder, so it is worth a shot.

If you have added any custom maps that exceed the tile limit it will cause this to happen as well. However, this issue was later fixed in a software update.

I have some kind of Indiama Jones feeling, 'Gps???, THIS is a GPS'

    Crocodile Dundee?

Already been covered. Please try to keep up with the rest of the class... <_<

    Cool. Your right again!

  10. I'd like to buy a Montana, but I have to wait until I can afford to buy the forklift necessary to move it around. ;-)

While I was surprise by the size of the Montana when I first got it, I have not found it to be a problem.

    A little size comparison:

  11. Your still on that. Sounds to be like your worried somebody might know something you don't.

At least I know the difference between your and you're, including their respective proper usages...

Yep you sure do. But don't worry that was just for you, because I know how you love being right.:laughing:

If you were thinking of the "knife" quote like that, it was Crocodile Dundee...not Indiana Jones...

Nice. Especially coming from a guy who would have pulled out a gpsmap 60csx. :anitongue:

Nice. Especially coming from a guy who will not and/or cannot back up his claim, either.

  14. Try the "delete all waypoints" option in the reset setup menu and then load the file.

I can't get past the "load" screen. The unit hangs then turns off after about 20 secs. I HAVE deleted all waypoints, text info, tracks, .gpx files by hooking the unit up to my computer. Unit software is also current version from Garmin.

Did you try deleting the gpx folder, or just whats inside it?

  15. I just have to say how incredibly cool it is to have both a Nuvi and and Oregon on steroids in one unit. The Montana truly is, in my opinion, the holy grail of Garmins. Once you set up the unit, no function or feature has to be more than two taps away. I take back what I said before, the Montana will be the gold standard of GPS units for a time to come. Reception is excellent, screen is the best on the market, and the menu system is unparalleled in it's user friendliness. The 600 model isn't that expensive compared to recent releases of previous models. The Montana is the Oregon killer. If you own an Oregon, once you get your hands on a Montana, there's no turning back. All my opinion of course. Others may disagree.

I have to agree. Having owned many garmin's over the past 10 years, the Montana is the best. I don't think anyone would regret buying this gps, if they don't mind the size

  16. Glad you like it, but the old style "clunky" Nuvi graphics blows compared to some of the newer high-res glass touchscreen auto units like the 3790t...

The Montana's nuvi graphics look exactly like the 3790t's graphics.

Oh really? Whilst researching this unit, I haven't seen any screenshots showing the high resolution 3D driving display WITH terrain on a planned route. According to the Garmin specs, it doesn't appear to have photo realistic Junction Views, either. It's not the same thing as lane assist, which both units do have.

Wrong. They are exactly the same.

Then post up some photos or links to back up that suspect claim... The specifications on Garmin's own page don't show it having Junction View.

Nope, don't feel like it. But when I do I will, maybe.

  18. Does anyone else notice any inconsistancies with the power button? Sometimes I have to press and hold the button numerous times b efore it will finally startup. Sometimes I have to take the batteries out and reinstall to get it to work. I've noticed this behavior in models such as the 62 and Oregon but not quite as much.

Is your altimeter set to record barometric pressure, and set as save always? Change it to save when power on and I bet that will fix your problem. I used to have that same problem on my 62, changed pressure trending to save when on and would take care of the problem. Of course it is fixed now with latest firmware.

  19.

It seems as though the new interface/menu system is an infant in many respects. I base this on the facts that 1) it is a major overhaul of the previous models and 2) there are so many random little bugs rearing their ugly heads. And based on my communication with Garmin it seems to me like their in triage mode, trying to fix the big problems first. It might take a few months before I go 30 minutes without experiencing some sort of oddity.

Most of my shut downs involve panning the map and clicking in waypoints, points of interest etc. I have noticed in the past few days using nuvi mode, that the speed limit does not always show. I can be driving to work and the current speed limit will be shown but on the way home it will not or vise versa. Their is also significant lag after you take a turn before it will update to the next, or miss a turn.
