  1. I knew that this was in August but I was so busy having fun that I forgot what day it was (literally and figuratively.) Fortunately, this was an afternoon when we rented mountain bikes during our two week adventure in Alaska and went cycling along the Tanana River near Fairbanks. We picked up four caches along the way so I see that I did earn the souvenir.
  2. Journey4Cache you need the Hawai'i map. See http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/usa-hawaii-osm-topo-routable
  3. VERY nice to hear from Mrs B, I hope you and yours are well! Currently, I am in a place where HamsterCaching never really caught on (Fairbanks, AK) as hamsters have not learned to hibernate and a block heater for an ammo can is impractical. Some cheechako tried solar heating, I hear, but forgot that there is very little sunlight up here when it gets cold...
  4. If you are going to Portland, why not take the time to go to the location of the first cache? GCGV0P and the very nearby Oct 2000 cache GC92 The Seattle area has HQ and an APE cache, of course.
  5. You may have missed the part where he indicated the bush was more than 161m away from the cannon so he could have both as individual caches.
  6. Jeff, for what it is worth, the lamp post caches tend to be in the suburbs in mall parking lots. The lamp posts in big cities tend not to have liftable skirts where you can hide caches. I live in a pretty cache rich environment but, given that I have been caching for 12 years, I've had to travel more than 40 k to get 14 of the 15 needed gems.
  7. The Monaco souvenir has been released...nope, don't have that one. Doesn't look bicycle friendly?‍♂️
  8. Unfortunately, the COs that place film canisters under light poles are not likely to be influenced to change their placement habits based on getting more favorite points. If they were, they would not put those kinds of caches out in the first place.
  9. I live in the most densely populated of the United States (New Jersey) There is a cache dense part of this state that is an International Biosphere Reserve called the Pine Barrens. There is little or no cell service there. I ride my mountain bike to cache there. I use a GPSr as do 75% of the people I cache with (in fact, I shut off my smartphone to avoid battery drain caused by a continual fruitless search for "service") I have cached by bicycle in many other parts of the USA where there is also minimal to no cell service. I live about 15 miles from center city Philadelphia and I can't get cell service at my own house( I use one of the biggest carriers.) This is not nearly as "rare" as your experience would suggest.
  10. From the District of Columbia souvenir in my profile: "The capital of the United States is owned by the federal government, and is not a part of any of the states. Its present area is comprised of land seceded from the state of Maryland. "
  11. Israel souvenir has been released. That's another one to my collection (from way back in 2007!) See: https://www.geocaching.com/blog/2019/06/new-country-souvenir-israel-with-geocache-of-the-week-house-of-fun/?newsletter=PM
  12. Normally the cache page will specify whether the District of Columbia can be used for a given "state" challenge. I have seen COs allow D.C. and some that do not. If the cache page does not specifically say you can use D.C. I would contact the CO before you get denied a find. I specifically remember a "4 states in a day" challenge that excluded D.C., it is NOT a state after all.
  13. If the CO placed the cache with a device that has poor accuracy under leaf cover your (the searcher) more accurate GPSr is not going to solve that problem. You may also want to check when the cache was placed (assuming deciduous forest) winter vs summer.
  14. This is the Off Topic forum, your inquiry is on topic for geocaching. Beyond that, the "checker" you refer to is not a Groundspeak function. You are presumably referring to a project-gc function. Try the forum there. As an aside, there are several pgc Jasmer checkers. The generic one show that you have recently logged GCA1 so that seems to be working. If you mean the Ontario one, remember that only counts caches IN Ontario
  15. There are several places to rent a kayak in the Houston area and there are 8 caches designed just for kayaks (per the listings) in Buffalo Run Park. One of my local parks here in South Jersey rents kayaks on the weekend and just shy of ten years ago we used that to find some Fizzy blocks. Susancycle, who is not a fan of sailing like I am, took to kayaking like the proverbial fish takes to water. Within a month we had purchased kayaks and now we have over 300 paddle-to to our credit. Give it a try!
  16. The good news is that survey makers and intersection stations are still open to everyone!
  17. Or you could do it the way the 'Cycles did it: Vencie to Poreč by bicycle and then the ferry back to Venice
  18. The problem is that some cachers use "other" when they mean "I don't want to tell you." I have found more than a few simple bison tubes, film cans and microcentrifuge tubes labeled "other" that were not hidden in a host and there is no description in the write-up. This renders the guideline "Other - See the cache description for information" useless.
  19. The Glossary is a good place to start. Acronyms is another.
  20. The May country souvenir is out: Costa Rica That is the last country we cached (although we had been there years ago on, what else, a bike trip) The climb up to Monteverde still ranks as the toughest ride of my life.
  21. Did you miss this line in the OP? "The cache has logs going back more than six months mentioning missing log books and container lid."
  22. Be sure to see the extensive Art Nouveau architecture in Riga. We were really impressed with what we saw when we biked through there 3.5 years ago
