  1. I might be on for this. Most evenings are good; weekdays better than weekends, although that's probably different than most peoples' schedules. A small "fee" would be fine, as long as it's not much more than $10. Sign me up!

  3. Zuuk, you're awesome! Way to stir the !!!
  4. Yeah, that's about what I thought. Like I said, it's not all that accurate when you power up the unit initially, but once you get a good, accurate postition fix (with a higher degree of 2d accuracy), the 3d fix (i.e. altitude) "adjusts" itself to be pretty accurate.
  5. While not a conclusive or scientific test by any means, I've found pretty good accuracy with my Vista. I have a survey certificate for my house which shows the elevation at the end of my driveway, and the Vista shows the same elevation there within 1/2 metre (I have it set metric and it only shows whole metres). On the beach it has shown 1-2 metres (at high tide, so I'm above the mean high tide level which is what elevation is usually based on, as far as I know). I've also checked it at a few mountain passes in the Rockies at known elevations (as well as a couple of airports, with published elevations), and it always seems accurate as long as you've had a decent degree of GPS accuracy since turning the unit on. That is, if you turn it on and get 22 metre accuracy, it may not be quite right until you wait for more sat reception to get better GPS accuracy so it can calibrate the barometric altimeter with data it's getting from the GPS altimeter. I have it set for auto calibration, as it seems to calibrate itself as well as I can manually by telling it the air pressure or a known elevation. That said, I haven't taken it through any major weather systems that might confuse its barometric altimeter; I'll have to try that some time while playing with GPS accuracy and see what happens! Hope that helps!
  6. I'd had my Vista for about a week and was a complete newbie to caching when I went to Calgary in January. I thought it might be fun to try a cache while I was there (I'd done about 2 here). With a light snow cover, and everything completely frozen solid (i.e. couldn't even move a rock!), it was not a successful experience. So yeah, I can see that it would be a problem. Here on the wet coast we don't have winters (well, not really!), so it's all good once you've got your BFL, some mud-proof boots and a rain jacket!
  7. Yup, seems to work well! I just figured it out this morning (thanks MarinerBC for your help!). Previously by best accuracy was 5 metres, but with a lock on #47 (just south of west here in Victoria BC) or #35 (just south of east here), or both, I was able to get 3 metre accuracy. I'm happy!
  8. I haven't tried a master reset since upgrading the firmware, but I just duplicated this problem on my Vista (it didn't do it before, possibly because my track memory was pretty empty). Let me know if you find a solution. Otherwise, yeah, I guess we just wait for another firmware update. Have you informed Garmin of the issue?
  9. Depending on where in Western Canada you are, you probably CAN get WAAS coverage. I've had my Vista for almost a month and just found out today how to get WAAS reception. I was informed by another cacher here in Victoria BC. Let me know if you'd like me to send you some instructions; I got my accuracy down to 3m rather than 5m, and it seems to help even when the WAAS satellites aren't easily receivable - it may just be luck, but I seem to get a lock faster even in a dense canopy.
  10. I'm in Victoria too, but haven't had any luck getting any WAAS reception with my Vista - even from the top of some local hills. Maybe I'm doing something wrong... I only have a few weeks' experience.
  11. I, too, have seen the light! I had no idea what this post was all about until earlier this evening... Welcome back Team KFWB GPS - and thanks!
