  2. I've only ever used one, the Aurora, but it's a good little light that's reliable and lightweight. When I need more power I just switch on the BFL. I get the best of both worlds - long runtime with the Aurora to get to a cache site, and all out intensity (up to 3 million candlepower!) with the BFL when I want the cache to surrender its location.
  3. I agree. Word is too much of a GUI and incorporates lots of extra tags that align everything the way you see it on your screen. It's probably also putting in some Java or other scripting commands. Make it simple and use something like Windows Notepad. Copy and paste all of the stuff between the <HTML> tags at the top and bottom. If you want, send me a copy of the Word document (or the html doc, whatever) and I'll go thru it and make it a simple HTML doc.

  5. Well, it calls the detail maps "secndmap.dat", but I've played around with this (setting it active or using no detail map), but I can't find a way to rename the map file. If I could, I think that might work... but for now, it keeps over-writing the secndmap.dat file.
  6. Maybe I need to clarify the problem I'm having. Yes, I can upload up to 4 regions. But since MapSend USA and MapSend Canada are not run from the same application, I can only upload Canadian regions or US regions - not both together, like you would with 4 different US regions. If I upload the Canadian regions I want first, then go to upload the US regions, my Canadian regions get deleted from the SporTrak. I haven't found a way to upload Canadian and US regions at the same time, as they use different MapSend applications. Does that make sense?
  7. Seems the only real BFLers are us here on Vancouver Island, Canada. BFL, for you unenlightened ones, is a big freakin' light. Given with much generosity to most of the Victoria-area cachers by Team KFWB GPS. As for Dagg's log: Most people here should know what a GPS is, also an FRS, and hopefully you know what BEER is! Maybe you just gotta be one of us hard-core cachers...
  8. Not exactly... what I want to do is import maps into the unit from multiple MapSend applications (a Canadian MapSend and a US MapSend).
  9. Personally, I think you're narrowing down the field of cachers a little too much. First, only "members" can see it. Of the relatively small number of people who can even see the cache page (of which I am not one!), fewer are probably willing to visit a cache that's on private property. For what it's worth, I'd suggest moving the cache to somewhere more publicly accessible, and/or making it accesible to everyone. I understand why you made it a members only cache, but maybe your plan is backfiring.
  10. No, the eTrex is just the most basic version of all of the eTrex models (one of which is your Vista). Fishfinder 100 is another different Garmin model. Only use the update that is specific to the Vista - all of the other updates listed on Garmin's software update page are for other specific models - there are no "generic" updates that will work on a variety of models. If you take a look at all of the products that Garmin offers, you'll see the eTrex (the yellow one), FishFinder 100 and lots of other models in the list.
  11. It seems the eTrex models prefer to he held in a horizonal plane, but others, including the Magellan SporTrak and, I believe, the Rinos, should be held upright. It might have something to do with the type of antenna (quad helix versus patch). I have the opposite problem with the SporTrak - I like to keep the GPSr on the dash in the car, and the Vista gets great reception there, but the Magellan wants to be upright so it has a tough time getting locks. I don't think either one works too well hanging around your neck, as your body is blocking about 180 degrees of signal reception regardless. If one does work better than another in this position, it would be the quad helix version.
  12. I have a SporTrak Map with both the Canadian and US MapSend CD's. I live in Canada, but occasionally travel to the USA. So, I'd like to have Canadian and US maps in the unit. But, since the MapSend apps are different (unlike Garmin's which incorporate all the maps into one app), and since a map upload deletes all previously stored maps, this doesn't seem possible. Are there any ways around this? I may try putting all of the maps into one 'folder' and editing the Windows registry to allow it to find all of the maps in the same place on my hard drive. Has anyone tried this? Any other suggestions?
  13. Well basically, there are a few different formats that you can put coordinates in. Assuming latitude and longitude (as opposed to UTM or some other format), you have degrees. One degree can be broken down into 60 minutes, and a minute is 60 seconds. That's right, just like time. So to convert, 50.5 degrees is 50 degrees 30 minutes. Geocaching.com coordinates are usually posted in hh mm.mmm format, which is degrees with minutes (and 3 decimal places of a minute). Converting to seconds is the same thing; 50 degrees 30 minutes and 30 seconds is therefore 50 degrees 30.500 minutes, or 50.50833 degrees. Got it? Get it. Good.

If you're using HTML, you would simply use something like this: <A HREF="mailto:me@here.com&subject=Virtual cache answer">E-mail me with the answer</A> Obviously you'll replace the 'me@here.com' with your e-mail address, and 'Virtual cache answer' with whatever you want to appear in the subject line. The one fault of this is that is reveals your e-mail address to anyone looking at the page. If you wanted to avoid that, you'd have to get them to e-mail you using the link in your Geocaching.com profile (or you could use some much more complex scripting to hide the address somehow, I think. Don't ask me how though!). Hope that helps!
  17. I've just started using my SporTrak Map (usually use a Garmin Vista), and I've got the Canadian and US MapSend maps for it. The SporTrak Map has 6MB of space for map downloads, and I can actually download a pretty huge area in that space. Basically, everything within about a 6 hour drive from here, and there's still lots of extra space (I didn't use all 6MB). I haven't compared features of the SporTrak Map with other Magellan units (I won it), but it definitely has some nice features. It costs a bit less than my Vista, but has almost as many features (except the altimeter and electronic compass) so I think it's a pretty good unit for the money.
  18. OK, thanks. I "won" the SporTrak a while ago (in a cache!), and upgraded the firmware before I even used it. So, I don't know what the basemap was like before. I didn't realize that the firmware upgrade included a new basemap (the upgrades on the Garmins only seem to add features and fix the occasional bug). Thanks again!

  21. Yes, that would be one way of doing it... although I think even just standing in one place, the GPSr would tell you that you were moving all over the place. This is probably all irrellevant anyways, as I would highly doubt that SA will ever be reinstated anyways. Too many non-governmental people and organizations use GPS now that there would be huge repercussions if their accuracy were suddenly detroyed.

I've gotten my Vista down to as good as 2m (6') accuracy, but I've had to sit at the top of a hill (or on a boat - anywhere with a nearly unobstructed view of the horizon all around you) for a while to get it. Obviously that's with WAAS enabled. Without WAAS, about 5m (15') is about the best I could do. Even along a beach (so say 180 degree horizon views) I can get 3 or 4 m (9 to 12 feet) accuracy.
  23. I've just started using a SporTrak Map (usually use a Garmin Vista), and so far I'm impressed with the features for the price. I've found the Canadian and US MapSend software, and noticed the "Magup" utility to upgrade the basemap in the unit. However, all the messages for MagUp seem to say to use it only with the 330 or some other unit. Is there a MagUp utility to upgrade the basemap on the SporTrak Map?

  25. Apparantly, even when SA was active, your GPSr would not include the degree of error due to SA in its accuracy or "EPE" reading. The reasoning is that the GPSr has no way of knowing that SA is active, so it could still say that its accuracy was 3m even though SA would take its actual accuracy to over 100m. At least, that's what I understand... there's more on this topic in the book "GPS Made Easy" by Lawrence Letham. [This message was edited by Peregrine007 on April 02, 2003 at 02:28 PM.]
