  3. go to the compass screen - on the bottom is the data field - if you cycle through the different fields you will find one that shows your location coordinates. make sure you set the coordinate field to the proper format in the units setup.
  4. well i could be mistaken but afaik the chip used in the x7x series as well as their gps locators is indeed a proprietary garmin format - i don't know of any other manufacturer's product using the chip. we're not talking about cf, sd, mini-sd or micro-sd - this chip is different.
  5. if they could utilize cf or sd instead of garmin's proprietary memory chip they would be the ultimate...
  6. you might want to do a forum search on this
  7. like Oz said - City Select or City Navigator from Garmin. Mapsource is the PC application (not a gps application) from Garmin that allows you to work with the CS or CN maps on your PC.
  8. Forerunner 305 now in my hands (along with cadence accessory) - or should I say on my wrist?
  9. turn off the electronic compass to see it it's causing the issue - you can do this by pressing and holding down the page button for a couple of seconds. using just the gps (instead of electronic) compass does the track up mode still work incorrectly?
  10. some people find the garmin carabiner clip to be a useful accessory for the hiker additionally you might like this for charging your batteries: Silva Solar Charger
  11. Really? How do you do it? I have a number of products that I have to install using update disks...
  12. you will find that garmin's policy of software unlocks is not strictly a "garmin" thing. each of the gps manufacturer's that offers a hydrographic navigation product or a street navigation product based on navteq data has to adopt this structure or one very similar to it. this is mandated by the organizations that own the map data - garmin does not. magellan does not. lowrance does not. stepping up... that said, i too find fault with tying a map product to a specific gps serial number. in my mind it means that instead of purchasing that newest hardware i might delay or put off that purchase altogether because i may need to repurchase all my software at the same time becuase i've run out of unlock codes. and stepping down off my soapbox... i'm sure there are ways that garmin could make this better for all of us, but i believe it's the organizations that own the map data that control how garmin's licensing model works with these products.
  13. you can get tide tables for canada from bluechart
  14. let's say that you're in a boat and navigating a lake with LOTS of islands - you can't go straight very often and need to move around and in-between the islands as you travel from point a to point b a "route" is a series of interconnected waypoints - i would use a route on this ficticious lake to tell myself the very first time i went there which way i wanted to go - which islands i wanted to travel between in order to get me from point a to b. think about a route as the kid's activity - connect the dots... straight lines between the waypoints. simultaneously my gps will automatically create a "track" for me (and you). it's a record of everywhere that i have been with my gps. so in this situation as i used my "route" to help me figure out exactly which directions i needed to travel and when i needed to turn to get through this maze of islands, my gps is automatically recording the path that i took - it's creating this "track". since a route is a bunch of straight lines it's not very accurate from a real-world perspective. a track on the other hand is exactly the path you took to get somewhere. so often what i do is i use a route the very first time i go somewhere and then on subsequent trips to the same place i'll ignore the route and instead use my saved (or active - but that's for another lesson) track to give me much more accurate guidance information.

  17. hcl - not sure if this is your situation but you'll have to hold it up to the window during flight as the aircraft's metal fuselage will block the required sat signals. for this reason a remote antenna is a useful accessory for air travel.
  18. whoops sorry i said gps 45 earlier - i meant gps 48 memory is not what it used to be...
  19. i'm interested in some real-world feedback on this issue also. and for fun let's just say that we use the exact same battery in both units - same brand, same mah, same everything - yes i know there may be some subtle differences even within same battery etc. if anyone has access to both units and has looked into the battery life please post with your experience - thanks.

  24. some of garmin's units have "via points" support which addresses this very issue - unfortunately not my 60 series
  25. Actually, as of October 21, 2005 Garmin did announce (via dealer marketing memo) that City Select was discontinued. It was the same memo that introduced City Navigator/DVD as a standalone product (meaning available for purchase without having to buy a gps hardware unit). "Discontinued products MapSource City Select North America Garmin Part Number: 010-10473-00 MapSource City Select Europe Garmin Part Number: 010-10359-00" Why it's taking so long for it to disappear from their website is a question I can't answer - I can only assume it's to support their customers with units that can't utilize City Navigator. Interestingly, City Select no longer has a part number or retail price on it's webpage...
