  1. I think Garmin has a $50US rebate program starting on the 28th for several "X" models including the Venture, Legend, Vista, 60CX and 60CSX. Not sure if any dealers will confirm this until then.
  2. the garmin motorcycle adapter includes a locking mount for the gps as well as a different power cable that has bare ends - you could wire it directly to your battery or a fuse block and it also includes a female socket (ipod earphone size more or less) for audio that would allow you to hook it to speakers mounted somewhere on your bike or in your helmet. be careful with the garmin 12vdc w/integrated speaker assembly - i do not believe it is designed for outdoor use.
  3. if hers came with cnv7 then you just need to enter her unlock code into mapsource and then her unit will be able to use your load of cnv7. if hers came with cnv8 then you have to install v8 because her unlock is tied to that specific version of cn - the gps will only work with the specific version that the unlock is associated with. if you installed cnv8 it would not overwrite your v7 - it would end up listing both in the map selection drop-down so you could use either v7 or v8 (again depending on your unlock codes).
  4. check your software version - garmin had an issue with b&w legend's some time back (a year or two ago) and they released a software update that reportedly corrected the problem.

  6. Hmmm, are you sure about that? garmin does give you the option to grab it manually as well as use the updater (following copied from 60csx software update page): *Update Unit Software with WebUpdater Use WebUpdater to automatically keep your operating software current. *Additional Software GPS Chipset Type G Ver. 2.60 as of Jun 29, 2006 Download USB Drivers Ver. 2.1 as of Aug 26, 2004 Download xImage Ver. 2.3 as of Mar 23, 2005 Download *Unit Software GPSMAP 60CSx Ver. 2.90 as of Jun 01, 2006 Download There has to be another way to do this - the webupdater does not work in all cases. I have a 3005c chartplotter and it requires the usb card programmer and blank card to get updates and then upload them to the 3005c. Because the 3005c does not directly hook up to my pc, webupdater (or marine updater) never see this device so their functionality becomes irrelevant and useless - webupdater cannot determine which gps I wish to update. Direct access to the update is the only way this will work for this unit.
  7. using nmea as your protocol you can hook up the 60 to an external device - like a fishfinder for example. doing so allows you to receive data from that device including depth and water temperature (i think there's one more data type that I'm forgetting also).
  8. don't clip into the hole near the antenna - the rubber is not nearly tough enough for that use buy garmin's carabiner clip - it works well
  9. cheap and dirty ford/chevy works for some - others like bmw porsche mercedes etc
  10. cs and cn have basically the same info - very good for mid to large centres, quite poor for smaller towns. metroguide is interesting in that it incorporates some of the detail from topo canada (lakes and provincial parks etc) but has much better detail for small towns than cs and cn. if you're driving along with metroguide you'll see the map display the lake that is on the right hand side of the road (and generally with the name of it) whereas cs and cn will not display anything at all except when you're around the very largest bodies of water. you might say that metroguide has more "ambient" detail. metroguide also has most rural roads labeled with their proper names whereas cs and cn will typically just say "road" unless they are major in some regard. the flipside to this is that mgv4 is a dead-end product. now that garmin has issued metroguide north america (without routing) mgv4 is essentially going nowhere (pun?). cs is also obsolete so you'll have to look around to find it. cn is the product to buy if you want up to date mapping going forward - it's the one that garmin will continue to enhance with new roads etc as they are built. me? i own both.
  11. if i had my choice (and the price was the same) i would prefer to purchase a european version and use it in north america. similarly if i lived in europe - i'd purchase a north american version. since i'm going to buy detailed maps for my primary area of use anyway (americas), i'd rather have a basemap that had detail for places that i probably wasn't going to be frequenting (europe)...
  12. and now have added a Garmin GPSMAP3205 to my stable. Updated listing looks like this: Had: GPSMAP168 SPIII GPS48 Have: 60CS Etrex yellow 76S SP2610 GPS10 Forerunner 305 GPSMAP3205 Coming Soon: NUVI 360
  13. you might be able to do that if you uninstall v6 but i've never tried that - i'm with chaos - why would you want to do that? keep in mind that your original license (version 4) has two unlocks. any upgrade you purchase is ultimately still tied back to that original purchase. an upgrade does not give you 2 additional brand new unlocks for 2 new unique gps units - an upgrade merely allows you to use the new software on the same 2 gps units you originally unlocked. you can install two or more versions of the same maps on your pc but i'm not sure about installing both on a handheld - never tried it.
  14. and that is true - you are correct. i think what he is saying is that if you have accidentally used both unlocks for the same gps serial number then you should contact garmin and advise them of that. they will likely be able to correct this.
  15. keep in mind that garmin do not make the maps, they only license map info from other parties. that is where the "inflexibility" you describe originates...
  16. emphasize to them that you're not looking for cnv7 but CSv7 so i don't know what relevance their stated "not possible" has to you
  17. tap, tap, tap... hello hellooooo! you really do want color. you do, you really do. so much easier to see and contextually much faster for your (and mine) brain to process - see at a glance if it's a road, a river, a topo line, power line, etc etc. color is used to identify these things - not just a shade of gray - and make that gray green if you're running with the backlight on at night. in a few years when it's time to upgrade that next person will be much more interested if you're offering color - you'll get a better price for a color unit.
  18. email garmin usa and not a european link if that's what you've been doing. you'll likely have to keep your cnv8 but garmin should be able to send you csv7 and a free unlock for it to satisfy your issue. i think garmin europe is not quite as willing (or maybe as able) as the usa when it comes to resolving customer situations.
  19. gps receivers are typically accurate to .1 mph car speedos read higher than actual for several reasons but one of them is so that you don't go after the manufacturer because you got ticketed for speeding when the speedo said you weren't...
  20. okay, so that's one million votes for the garmin... well, make that one million and one... - get the 60csx -
  21. 60cx also has a little larger screen and more (direct-access to the) function pushbuttons
  22. and don't have your gps connected while you install trip and waypoint manager - connect it to your pc after the software is installed.
  23. and therein lies the dilemna... i posted a thread about this a year or two ago when the 60c and cs first came out. garmin (I know it's not magellan which is what you posted about) broke their trackback feature (map76S, map168 marine) which would operate exactly like how you would like your magellan to work (but isn't). my example was something like if i broke my leg halfway along the return path from (BtoA) of a straightline trip (from AtoB and then back to A) i would be forced to crawl back to B before being returned to A. this is contrary to how a 76S and 168 work. the new color OS broke this feature imho. flame suit on...
