  1. I found a great tutorial for setting up paperless caching with a Garminetrex, a PC and a Palm Zire using GSAK and Cachmate. Here's the link:
  2. I have a Garmin Venture CX, Vista HCX, palm Zire 72 and a PC with Windows XP. A few years ago I set it all up for paperless caching with GSAK and cachmate on my husband's computer. All was well, until my marriage went South, and I had to leave that laptop behind. I need to set it all up again on my computer and I'm wondering if GSAk and Cachmate are the best/easiet tools to use. Step by step instructions would be helpful as well
  3. Add in one Oncology Nurse! Love my patients and my profession just a wee bit more than caching. Think we're still ahead!
  4. Sounds like SD is set to go out of the box, DVD a bit more involved. What are the pros and cons of each? Can the SD be updated as well? We have 2 Venture CXs and would like some suggestions.
  5. Downloaded pocket queries last night on my Garmin and PDA, only to find after driving 3 hours, that my Garmin wouldn't turn on. Immediately thought, "Ahh... just need to replace my batteries", lets just say after trying a couple sets of brand- new spanking batteries, we couldn't make it happy Drove back home wishing we'd had a backup GPS. Anyone ever had this problem before? Of course, Garmin support is not available on weekends
  6. Why the DVD and not the memory card? Isn't the memory card ready to use out of the box? What does "NT" stand for?
  7. Need some advice/info about City Navigator. Read something about getting a DVD v.s. CD, but need more input. What are the pros and cons of the two, and where's a good place to find it at a good price?
  8. No intended Spaming here. Didn't get an answer on the other forum, so placed the question here thinking maybe it wasn't a start up topic after all. Also didn't know the same topic couldn't be posted in two areas.
  9. aaahhhh....your'e kill'n me. Which suggestion? and how about a hint
  10. Dinoprophet, I think you're right about the 2nd puzzle. Here's an example of one of the clues: 57 is 10, 10 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4, and 4 is cosmic, I have to solve for 3 different numbers this way. Thanks for your help and Car's too, never mind my humor
  11. 1st puzzle: The title of the cache is 5 words, each word stands for a letter, and then each letter stands for a number, Hint given is that "Every"=3 2nd puzzle: A number, any number ends up at 4 (states not to try addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division), i.e. 57 is 10, 10 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4 3rd puzzle: N = R, D U = D, R, R M = D, R, D, D L = D, D C = D, R, D, D, L Have to contrive numbers for N,M,L, & C to plug into the final coordinates Sooooo....Any suggestions/ specific names for these types of puzzle questions I can Google or look for on this site? My plan is to find all of them tomorrow without stopping for food or drink
  12. Won't have time to get my Doctorate, and what fun is it if I take the easy way out and wander around within 2 miles of the cache ? So here goes.. as general as possible...The title of the cache is 5 words, each word in the title stands for a letter, and then each letter stands for a number in order to complete the coordinates for the cache. The hint given is that "Every" equals 3. 2nd puzzle problem: Start out at a number, any number, and end at the number 4 . Have to solve for different numbers this way. 3rd puzzle: N= R, D U= D,R,R M= D,R,D, D L= D, D C= D,R,D,D,L Need to come up with number substitutes for NUMLCC Is there a specific name for these kind of puzzles and where's a good place to start looking. My plan is to find each and everyone of them tomorrow, without stopping for food or water
  13. I've got to find 3 puzzle caches to get the coordinates for a 4th, which contains the other half of TB coordinates to find the ultimate cache. Tried Googling it, but looked like I needed a Doctorate degree in math to decipher what the heck they were talking about. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
  14. Wouldn't ya know it! I've got to solve 3 puzzle caches to get the coordinates for the 4th cache to hook up with a 2nd TB that has the coordinates for the ultimate cache. Whew..... I've tried Googling number/word puzzles, but haven't found anything very helpful. Any suggestions would be great!
  15. I use a Palm Zire 72. It's got a big color screen with a built in camera... very easy to use
  16. I got a Palm Zire 72 on EBay for $135.00... not sure if I got a good deal. I had never bought anything on Ebay before and knew nothing about PDAs, I just sort of placed a bid for the heck of it, and WHAM!... it was mine. Works fantastic for caching, nice big color screen with a camera. Love paperless caching. I still have a huge stack of printed cache pages that I'm trying to recycle as scratch paper.
  17. I'm adding a decent number of found caches to my list, but what I've found in the way of swag is pretty disappointing. Not that I'm trying to find a rare treasure, but items other than broken McDonald's toys or the equivalent would be fun to find. Heck, an interesting rock would be cool. I'm totally aware that one person's junk is another man's treasure, but there's no way anyone wants mildewed baseball cards or pieces of broken toys. Seriously considering carrying extra swag to revamp some of these caches. Not intending to insult fellow cachers, but is anyone with me on this?
  18. First time out after going paperless! Wow! What a difference. Had a blast and found lots of caches on a vacation weekend. Using GSAK and cachmate-couldn't be happier! GSAK is somewhat intimidating and I'm sure it can do way more than how I'm using it. Just need to play with it, but geeez that cuts into my caching time . Question...found several signature items. What's the deal with these? They travel, but on one site it said it was ok to keep them
  19. What are the steps to import the pocket query into google earth?
  20. NightPilot- I may have phrased my question incorrectly. My goal was to get what was on my PC screen onto my Palm. I was able to figure it out and it's working great. Some suggestions that I have for you in responding to these questions in the forums are: 1) Remember that those that are asking the questions, need to have the "basic concepts" explained to them, otherwise they wouldn't be posting the question. 2)Avoid using acronyms. 3) If you find yourself frustrated with the lack of knowledge displayed by others, avoid responding to the post. Everyone new to this game will have varying degrees of computer skills, but let's remember the ultimate goal
  21. Paid for cachmate, got a confirmation e-mail, stating " thanks for registering", confirmed my user ID and gave me a 16 digit registration code to register. Can't find where to register, downloaded it to my desktop, but don't see a link for installing. Need majorhelp on this one.
  22. Since it's raining today, I decided to tackle the challenge of making myself "paperless". Proud to say that after spending about 5 hours- GSAK, my computer and I have somehow managed to get waypoints on my GPS! WWHHOOOO!!!!! For a person that is not intuitive with computers and complicated programs, this was a monumental task. Still waiting for my confirmation from Cachmate to get that on my Palm, couldn't be any more difficult for me than GSAK I'm sure . GSAK looks like an incredible program, is there a hard copy manual available? For my pocket query, I was sure to not check a lot of boxes, and requested 500 caches, but only received 72, how come?
  23. Thanks for the advice Trucker Lee. It sounds so simple and I've done that before, but it's the sequence of buttons that still trips me up. I think it's a matter of really getting to know the functions of my GPS and being consistent with it. My saving grace is that I have an "Eagle Eye" so that even though I'm lame with my GPS, if I can get close to the site, I can usually find the cache...most likely a talent I was born with
  24. A flashlight!...one more item to add to my backpack. There I was... poking around underneath a huge tree that had fallen over a stream in a dark dense forest. The trunk was so big I could just about stand up in it. I was so desperate I was trying to use the brightest light setting on my GPS. Eventually my eyes adjusted, and BAM! There it was....my micro first FTF!!!! Love it!
  25. Thanks for the info Miragee...very helpful. Just what I needed to know.
