  1. Does anyone know who these guys are? They must surely be experienced geocachers to get so many done in one day - but seem to have created the account recently - maybe two veterens have come together for this epic? Can't think they can be local to have not done any of these caches before. The mystery continues . . . Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Why is it that when you're out for a walk carrying a map everyone asks if you're lost?
  2. Hi Chris, I'd be really interested to do the virtual caches you describe as the most memorable, moving and interesting. So far I've only done a few virtuals and have not found them very exciting. The ones I have done could easily have been done without a GPS! However I am happy to be shown some more exciting ones - several of the multi's and long walk caches I have done didn't really need the find at the end, they were brilliant in themselves. Can you email me with the names of the virtuals you found the best and I'll give them a try? 3. Annoying bleeping, what annoying bleeping!!!! You must be hearing things!!!! We can't here anything here can we guys????? Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Why is it that when you're out for a walk carrying a map everyone asks if you're lost?
  4. Interestingly, one cache I attempted "Hard Oiler's Request" is a virtual and a multi. I did the virtual then attempted the multi but couldn't find it. Since then (almost 3 months ago) 3 have done the virtual but only one tried the second stage. To many it must seem a bit like a hiding to nothing when you can log the virtual part anyway. Personally I'm just waiting for someone to find it now before I make a special excursion to try again! A bit like my attempt at "Obviously Built Early Like It Superceded Knights" - The Cookie Crew found it today to that's like a red rag to a bull and I'll be back to look for it. 5. Well done you two! Couldn't have chosen a better cache to mark the anniversary (IMHO). Just think of all those bears that have been released - I just hope they are all being looked after properly, I've just tucked ours up with Dunk who hurt his arm today, they are making him feel a lot better! 6. Hi Sonya :-), I tend to agree with Dan, and, being a bit of a cheat I'm certainly likely to look at a clue! I know I've missed out on some interesting places in the past because I've just been able to cache and dash. With a multi I like the feeling of uncertainty when looking for the final part when the coordinates have been derived from previous clues. I certainly would prefer a longish walk and a multi and if those who want to do loads of caches each day don't want to attempt it because it will take too long then it is their loss. 7. Hi Twist & Turn, I find myself switching my GPS between hddd mm.mmm and OS grid formats all the time - in fact I'm quite quick at it now. If you're doing a multi-part cache you'll find all the clues and coordinates are in hddd mm.mmm format but to give you an idea of where to go (I don't find the maps on my GPS as user friendly as a nice paper OS map) I need to plot the OS grid ref that my GPS converts for me on the map. I've done it so much now I find it part of the fun!!!! Strange that I am!!!! 9. If you go down to the woods today . . . Ohh err Mrs, an awful lot of those walks are very close to home. Thank God the school sponsored walk is over for another year, I would not like to have to explain meeting that lot to a bunch of year 3s!!!! 10. I know a lot of you don't look at the General Forum here but there's a thread running about an item concerning Geocaching due to be broadcast tomorrow (Weds 11 June) between 6 and 7pm. The thread was posted by Mart'n'Al. Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Why is it that when you're out for a walk carrying a map everyone asks if you're lost?
  11. Hey if Geocaching takes off on Jersey people (ie some of the 100k residents) are going to be buying GPSrs yes? So you take a walk down St Helier High Street and visit some of the yacht chandlers and ask them if they are willing to hire or loan you a demo unit so you can place some caches. You then set up a simple web site say JerseyGeocaching.com, make sure it's listed on all the search engines and have it consist of two simple pages - one that directs you to the shop that very kindly loaned you the GPSr and one that directs you to Geocaching.com where they can find and log their caches. Simple. Also email everyone who has found the one cache on the island (and the placer of course) and set up a meet in a local pub to discuss how you can take the sport forward. And be prepared for some walking, because a lot of really cruel people like me plant caches that involve long walks and hills because that's why we do geocaching. But most of all have fun! 13. Hi Iwuzere, and welcome to the world of Geocaching - you don't have to be mad to join in but it helps (and so does a GPS!) You're in a bit of a tricky situation on Jersey - it would normally be recommended that you find a few caches before planting your own (the ratio of 20:1 has been suggested) - I've found over 60 but am still learning important points about planting them (mostly HTML based!) but if you don't have many locally to find then how can you gain experience? Maybe you need to come over to the Winchester or Southampton area for a weekend's intensive caching and we need to organise the next cache bash on Jersey and plant some more whilst we're there! There are a few on Guernsey and one on Alderney, could you try those out before planting your own on Jersey? As for encouraging Geocaching on the island, there must be loads of sailors who have GPSrs who wouldn't mind putting them to other uses when there are storms, low tides etc - maybe see if there are some likeminded soles who'd like to join you from the yacht club? If I get over this summer on my father's boat I promise to plant a cache or two but we usually go to Guernsey and Alderney instead Sorry Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Why is it that when you're out for a walk carrying a map everyone asks if you're lost?
  14. Thanks to Omally who pointed me in the right direction I've learnt quite a lot about HTML today. Can't say I'm an expert yet but I've now managed to replace the windings characters with little tiny graphics (they're quite sweet really) which will hopefully display on non-MS based machines and also used the ALT function to display letters which work quite well but you have to be careful not to confuse the I and 1! I'm going to keep trying and hopefully learn a bit more - also I've tried replacing my keyboard by the e and the z keep repeating - thanks everyone for their help. Lizzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
  15. Is there anyone out there who can help me with displaying my latest cache in a more multiple machine friendly format? I wrote a file using Frontpage but used Windings font and its now been pointed out to me that on non-MS machines, PDAs etc the font will display as gobbledegook (I did wonder!). I really would prefer to use odd characters rather than A+B+C etc as the numbers go up to I and O so could cause some confusion with 1 and 0! Maybe I could use mini graphics to depict the formula???? What I'd really like someone to do is take my file (I can email it to you) and change it for me plus show me how to add a photo into it and maybe a background like so many of you clever people do! I'm thinking of pages like "Carry on Caching" by Dan & Pid here. Please can someone help. I know I'm being incredibly lazy and should be RTFMing but I find I learn best from example and if I could compare the HTML that I've (sorry Frontpage has) written with a proper multi-machine script then I can learn what to do for next time. Thanks Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
  16. Derek's recommendatons are well worth following. I haven't had the courage (or time) to try Tumuli Turmoil yet but hope to soon. If you like Multi's try Tomb Raider Mission I at Brookwood Cemetry (about 2 hours) or Ann and Brian's Wind series (North Wind, South Wind etc) cumulating in Force 9 (about 4 hours) plus I've heard that Quantum Leap by Tim & June is to be recommended. Have a great time! Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Why is it that when you're out for a walk carrying a map everyone asks if you're lost?
  17. quote:Originally posted by The Merman:I remember my Emap showing that Walking on Water was situated in the middle of the Hamble and I had to toss a coin to decide which bank it was actually on! Exactly the same thing happened to us in the same place with our eMap, and we really managed to walk on water to get to Solent Way!!! It was only the basemap though, now I've loaded Mapsource maps it's pretty good. I've never had a problem with the actual coordinates it gave me though, just the map - you can always check accuracy pretty well by going to a trig point. 18. Well done Dan, excellent article! Let's hope everyone else thinks so. I especially like the comment about Golf. Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Why is it that when you're out for a walk carrying a map everyone asks if you're lost?
  19. quote:Originally posted by Omally:I, like Mrs Blitz, use a geocache box to take my sarnies to work... does that count? Ah yes Omally, but do you still get that twinge of excitement every day when you see the box, and do you hide it under a pile of logs when you get to work each morning?!!! 20. Last week I was admiring the leather case that a friend kept his cigars in; he explained that it had been his father's but he had recently seen similar cases for sale advertised as Tampax holders! It reminded me that I actually use a Lilets tampon holder to keep my AA batteries (for my GPSr) in - does anyone else use everyday objects to help in their Geocaching exploits? (I just pray that I never get my holders mixed up!!!!!) 21. I sent my sons to school today with packed lunches that consisted of; log book, pencil, disposible camera, MacD's happy meal unidentifiable soft toy, bag of marbles, assorted key rings and a wet pair of socks - they were not amused!!! They didn't even appreciate that I had checked the box for waterproofness before giving it to them (and it's raining today too) - they just don't appreciate when they're well off! 22. quote:Originally posted by Omally:I reckon we could all do with a period of instability for a while. We can all act like grown-ups (although it's suprising how few are willing to do so) therefore we ought to endure a period of moderatorlessness. If we all are obliged to moderate ourselves for a bit then maybe, _just maybe_, we all might start acting like reasonable adults. Hiding behind Avatars and flaming people is fairly stupid (and I'm as guilty as everyone else here) so lets try _NOT_ being stupid for a change. Whilst I'm sure all the regular, caching contributors to this forum will be willing to take Omally's advice, the speed at which part-time caching trolls are appearing will mean that the flames will never die down. I therefore agree with Dan that we need a temp moderator NOW (isn't there some sort of agency for temp moderators, maybe I should check in Yellow Pages - or maybe we really need counselling! ) Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Don't you think that sooner or later someone will notice that its a mobile phone not a GPS your using???
  23. Do you know, the only other forums that I have read were the BBC Celebaq ones and, due to a possibility of legal action for libel, every message had to be ok'd by admin BEFORE it was posted. It really killed the board off for a while. I now think the same should happen here. This board can be accessed by a link from geocaching.com under the banner "Discuss Geocaching". I will not be posting anything else until it gets back on track. Goodbye (and hopefully au revoir - but maybe not) Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Don't you think that sooner or later someone will notice that its a mobile phone not a GPS your using???

  25. It seems that the density of cachers and caches north of the border could mean that they could stay out of any association for the time being (they are still in their infancy) then maybe set up their own scottish devolved association once caching takes off up there. Lots of love from a effete, namby-pamby southern toff Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Don't you think that sooner or later someone will notice that its a mobile phone not a GPS your using???
